“DAB portable with alarm function that's good for the price”

written by dave1942 on 20/11/2012

I was looking for a DAB portable that would wake me in the morning with my favourite radio station and I found this one on special offer at Argos for about £30.
The radio takes four AA batteries or runs from a 5V power pack which is supplied, unfortunately the lead is only about 2m long so you may need an extension to put the radio where you want it.
Battery life is fair but if you leave the radio in standby (the digital display stays lit showing the time and date) it will flatten a set in a few days. You need to leave it in standby to use the alarm function, if you switch the set off at the back it stays off! If you want to use it as an alarm use the mains power pack. It has a sleep function so you can go to sleep on one station and wake up to another, and as you can program the volume of the alarm, you can have it quiet at night and loud in the morning.
Sound quality is fairly good and it goes quite loud, the radio is sensitive and picks up DAB signals as well as any modern DAB set. In FM mode it is very good and displays RDS text.
The front panel has 15 buttons which is a bit daunting for non techies but it's all fairly easy to use.
