“Grand Hotel Sharm el Sheikh***** -Disappointing”

Written on: 19/11/2012 by Vmerrills (1 review written)

Not really up to 5* quality standards, it's just the amount of facilities that get the star rating. The hotel's main public areas are impressive on first inspection, however, after a few days it became obvious that the hotel is in need of extensive refurbishment. The hotel's rooms (standard rooms) are very small with no room to accomodate suitcases during the holiday. The staff mostly work hard to to maintain the hotel, we frequently saw and heard hammering etc.but the furniture and fittings are very tired and worn. The cleaning staff are all very pleasant and friendly, although the bar staff are mostly rude if you do not tip at every opportunity, the staff at the bar area will not serve you no matter how long you wait. We had problems with the supervisor at the Pool Island Grill who clearly did not want to work and disappeared whenever it was busy. When forced he would take orders but not bring them. Many of the bar staff just wanted to talk to any young females and ignored all other customers. The mix of the guests is 50% German, 40% Russian (who are very rude and ignorant) and 10% all others.
The beach area is okay but you must use the short jetty to get in and out of the water (the fish are spectacular). There are several restaurants but you need to book at 9am the day before as they will tell you they are booked up - they aren't, we went several times and there were more empty tables than full ones, the menus are a bit different but not brilliant and the wine is very expensive (you just get a bottle of the same wine you get served by the glass on AI you just have to pay £23 for it!)The AI restaurants are okay but the same food is served every single day without change an all the restaurants- very boring. The red wine is very acidic, the rose is a mix of 1/4 red wine and 3/4 white wine - we watched them do it! Overall cleanliness is good and we suffered no stomach problems. Watch out for the mosquitos they are vicious!!Also there are lots and lots of steps everywhere!
