“Great dogs, but extremely powerful and territorial.”

written by Raygirl on 18/11/2012

Love my two Staffies (black and white) due to their eagerness to please, cuddly nature and happy-to-be-here attitude. Got both as adults from shelters. However, they are very territorial and if another dog acts like it wants a fight, you have a big problem because the Staffie will always come out "the bad guy" (because they 'lock on' to the other dog and won't let go no matter how much yelling, screaming, pulling goes on). I say this from experience. I have been to the emergency room after trying to separate my male's jaws from another dogs' throat (German Shepherd). The other dog almost bit my finger off even though I was trying to help, Another time they both jumped my fence to fight with my neighbor's dog (big lab) who was running loose and the other dog ended up one ear less and I had a big vet bill. So, lovely dogs to the family but dangerous to other dogs - even on leashes they are so strong they can pull it out of your hand in an instant (if there is a fight to be had). Don't be fooled by their strength. It is immense. Even on leashes I am nervous to be outside with them because I have experienced all this. On the plus side, they are great with kids and have never growled or shown any aggression toward strangers. If you live in a neighborhood with lots of other dogs, I would think twice about this breed.
