“I thought they were better than this!”

written by ramp535 on 14/09/2012

I bought a Jamis Beatnik from them that was origionally £300 and put down to £259.99 in sale.

Being a beginner I wanted a cheap bike to get me to work and back which is only 2.5miles away. I wanted a really simple bike for the purpose and hence went for single speed Beatnik to avoid complications.

In less than a week I started having problems with the bike. The pedal started to jump/ slip for whatever reason. I took it to the shop and they decided to change the pedals putting it down to low quality pedals.

It still didnt fix it. They then said we are fully booked this week and I should book my cycle in the following week. Then another guy came from the back office and said this problem isnt fixable and I will have it with all single speed bikes regardless. They kept calling my bike cheap and stuff which I know it is but if its that poor quality that it wont even last a week then why are you guys even selling that kinda stuff??

I remember my childhood bike and it lasted me 5years without issues and it was a lot cheaper than this Beatnik. If this is how quickly their bikes develop problems then how are they different to a Tesco bike which are just a fraction of the cost.

Anyway, then on the spot without thorough inspection they suggested I upgrade the pedals and the back wheel bearings. And that will fix the problem. That would cost £20 for pedals and something in the region of £100 for the good quality bearings. The staff had no sympathy that it was a new bike and that it would be hard for me to accept that I am having to spend on repairs already!

What is the whole point of buying a brand new cycle if you need to spend half its worth on upgrading the bike within a weeks time?

I loved the bike a lot and had fallen in love with it in jsut a week but I could not spend more on the bike and decided to return it.

At the time of return/ refund one frame bag bought online and paid via paypal was refused at the store. On the the invoice it said I could do store returns and there were no exclusions mentioned. And even on their website under store returns this is what it says:

Returning your purchase to a store
We also offer the option of returning your mail order purchase to your local Evans Cycles store.

Simply take your purchase and original receipt into your local store. Staff will issue a refund on the spot, or you can browse our store and exchange your purchase for an alternative product..

As with postal returns, store returns must be made within 90 days, refunds will be processed using the original payment method, and the goods must be returned in original packaging with all warranty cards, manuals and accessories.

Then after contacting customer services I found out they have different policy for Paypal which are mentioned under different category on the returns page.

I think it is very unfair to receive invoice stating that I can return items in store and then to find out that it was a lie and special exclusions apply.

I am very disappointed with my 1st overall experience with Evans Cycles and I will try and avoid them for future purchases. I would prefer going to a shop that values my custom and if upfront about what their policies are.
