“A terrible purchase - do not touch SAMSUNG FF, go...”

written by on 03/08/2012

Originally bought this product in Feb 09, looked good, big capacity and just what I wanted. All worked fine for the first 2 1/2 years and then, when out of warranty and then the troubles started.

The fridge iced up, as so many others have reported and struggled to stay cold ruining a fridge full of food, luckily the temperature display told me what was happening and research on the web told me that Samsung would repair this for free. They did this within 4 days which was good.

Only 10 months later one evening I noticed a loud clicking noise coming from the rear of the FF, I thought it was just an odd noise as the temperature displays told me that all was well in both sides of the unit. After coming home from work the next day armed with bag fulls of shopping for the weekend I opened the fridge and noticed an odd smell, and then realised despite the temp display telling me it was 3degreesC in there, it was more like room temperature, not good.

I then opened the freezer, to be faced with a wall of defrosted food, about £200 worth, again despite the temp display telling me it was -18! I unplugged the unit, and then turned it back on again, the display then told me the freezer was 5 degrees, and the fridge 18!!! It must have not been working for a while.

After a little fault investigation I figure it is the compressor that has gone, as even when displaying actual temperatures, I can hear the relay click in and then nothing, the fan is working and the compressor is VERY hot to the touch.

I called Samsung, wondering if the extra workload placed on the compressor by the previous fault could have caused its early failure to be told (repeatedly) they only cover the 6 parts to do with fridge defrost on the 5 year extended warranty and will not cover anything else. I can have a free diagnosis call out, but they will not cover parts or labour if it is anything else but these 6 parts. A compressor is £140, plus over an hours labour to decompress, change the compressor and re-gas, we all know its not going to be cheap!!

If it was a one off I could accept the cost and get on with it, but reading these and other reviews I know this is becoming more and more common as time goes on. There is an obvious problem with this unit that Samsung are refusing to take responsibility for; this is not just good enough for such a big company supply faulty, expensive ff (£650) to the unsuspecting consumer. We all expect these purchases to last longer than 4 years...

I am now relying on the 2nd hand mini-bar (BBQ beer fridge) that I bought 10 years ago for £30... I would NEVER touch a Samsung FF again, even with a 5 year extended warranty for free. I would advise you all to stay away and stick to the other more reliable brands.
