“Power and interchangeable blades did it for me!”

written by geoffk on 01/08/2012

In effect the Mac Allister MRS1400 scarifier is an inverted plastic box with a wheel attached to each corner, without any turbo or grass compaction arrangement, mores the pity as I found that the grass catcher was only half full when it started to spill onto the lawn, initally I thought that this was because the lawn was very wet but later when the grass was drier it seemed no better, maybe the grass has to be bone dry to collect successfully. On the plus side this machine has a 1400 watt motor, largest in its class, the widest cut 370mm, and also interchangeable steel blades and spring tines.
There is no messing with this machine set the depth of cut and away you go it tears through your lawn without complaint. The steel blades cut mini furrows into the soil ideal for a major lawn makeover, re-seeding then topdressing. For de-thatching the spring tines are required but don't stop with the motor running as it will strip your grass bare. A small but obvious tip, cut the grass as short as possible befor you start as this will reduce the amount of debris produced and keep a wheelbarropw to hand. I have previously been using a B&D Lawnraker and it is really put in the shade by this machine, there are cheaper scarifiers and probably better ones but, buy the one with the most powerful motor and you won't be disapointed. If you do buy one of these you will wonder about the rear wheel arangement I think it is to cover up a design error!
