We've just returned (24th-31st July 2012) from the Aqua Sol Hotel in Elounda, Crete through Olympic Holidays on the all inclusive package.
We had decided that we didn't want to end up with a load of drunk teenagers and so had spent a long time choosing our hotel. Booking was straight forward and the Olympic site was easy to use. We were able to choose from a few options with the booking and so we went for sea view rooms close together and took the gamble to go for a higher floor. This was a great choice as the view was superb and was a quiet area in the hotel. Olympic came through as the rooms were next to each other. We also paid for seats together on the plane which cost an extra £40 over all. This was my one complaint about the whole holiday as we were later offered the chance to choose any seats for £2.50 each would would have halved this cost. We did try to call Olympic but the operator that we spoke to couldn't see our point at all; this is what has stopped me giving a 5 star.
Back to Elounda....... The hotel was a nice hotel, quite big, but spread out so that there were no times when we felt packed in. There were two pools, one of which was busier than the other, one being known as the "quiet" pool. It was at this pool that we spent our time. Although this was the last week in July there were usually fewer than a dozen or so people at this pool and often we had it to ourselves! Even the main pool had sunbeds free at any time of the day.
The food in the hotel was nice, there was a good selection for all meals and we probably ate more than we have ever done so in a week. The wine was drinkable on the AI and the beer was fine. Fizzy drinks were a bit sweet but as they were local it was to be expected. Ice creams were good.
The hotel is a way away from other places (which is one reason why we chose it) and Elounda was about a 25 min walk away which we did three days. In the evening there was entertainment offered by the animation team but that was not really our scene so we avoided it. The animation team were French (as were most of the guests) but they did translate into English as much as they could and seemed to be really good with the kids (ours were too old for this) as well as offering delights such as aqua-gym and yoga around the main pool.
The rooms in the hotel were fine, plenty big enough and the air con worked well. The weather was really warm although it was fairly windy, something we discovered wasn't unusual. The wind however was warm and didn't bother us, it did keep us a bit cooler.
The hotel staff were amazing; so helpful but unobtrusive. As soon as you had finished with your plate it was taken away and they refilled glasses and wine jugs as soon as needed. Nothing was too much trouble for them.
All in all this was a great holiday and would recommend this resort and Olympic to other people without any qualms.
