As I did not take a gap year due to the fees increasing, Plan My Gap Year's volunteer projects seemed like the ideal substitute during my university break. The basis of the organisation is brilliant as it allows for a very diverse range of people to volunteer- it does not discriminate due to age or length of stay. In addition, it provides an ever-growing variety of destinations, whilst still being fantastic value for money.
I cannot fault a single part of my experience in Sri Lanka from start to finish. When I landed in Colombo, I was met by the driver who took me to the volunteer house. Here, I felt instantly at home thanks to the host family and the other volunteers. The city of Galle is a rare beauty, almost completely unspoilt by human hands.
I am hugely grateful to have been able to help a community in need, even in a small way; I was touched to have come across such unquestionable loyalty from the locals towards us. The sense of accomplishment was exhilarating and I hope to be able to match the feeling next year with another one of PMGY's projects.
