“General design is dubious - relies on a screw thread...”

Written on: 21/07/2007 by Mike Shearer (1 review written)

Good Points
Works excellently on light dry firm twigs and branches up to about 3cm diameter

Bad Points
Can't handle damp or wet material, fibrous material winds around cutter spindle and jams - only way out for me on several occasions has been to dismantle the machine to clear it (reversing was hopeless). Don't even think about using it for palm fronds - it will be amazingly good for a while, then hopeless.

General Comments
General design is dubious - relies on a screw thread with sharpened edges to chop material, then has a rotating cutter supposedly to clear any material that hasn't chopped. Screw thread works fine on dry brittle material, just mashes soft and fibrous stuff, which the rotating cutter fails to clear. I've disassembled my machine three times to clear it, and have tried to fix the rotating cutter to do the job it appears to have been intended for, and failed each time.
The fibrous material can impact around the spindle so tightly it is tempting to clear it out by burning it with an oxy torch, instead of using chisels and multi grips to pull it out small piece by small piece.

I've been a Bosch fan for 40 years, but this machine has shaken my faith. I regret buying it because it is too fussy about what it will deal with, which isn't anywhere near what a normal garden produces to be chipped.
