“GVI Township Project, Cape Town”

written by charlottewaine on 22/06/2012

I have undertaken a variety of different GVI projects including Community Renovation in Ao Luk, Thailand however i choose to speak about my latest project: Assist with childcare & educational activities in a township orphanage while exploring Cape Town. One of the reasons why i throughly enjoy GVI is the diverse range of people you meet, some from Asia, Australlia, America etc. These people you meet become life long friends and you are able to continue sharing your passions together with them. This project really opened up my eyes to how different our world is to theirs. In Massiphumalele township, the people do not have direct access to a local supermarket like us. The Rainbow Nursery was an amazing place. The women,Cornelia and Phyliswa are doing a fantastic job in keeping the children out of mischief. With lesson time, snack time, play time, song time and story time, these children are consitently happy with everything they have. They are always smiley, excited and happy showing no sign of a hard life even though most children in townships probably go through a lot. GVI also allows us to have free weekends where you can undertake all the sites plus more you want to see for example table mountain, robbin island, langa tour. They offer oppotunities where which you may not have been able to see or go to if you were with family members. All my best holidays and volunteering work have been with GVI and I strongly recommend them to anyone passionate in helping out!
