“Booking.com works with hotel owners who lie and cheat”

I've had very negative experiences with booking.com. The one place they booked us in Venice was a disaster: B&B A Venice Emeralds. No one was there at the B&B when we arrived at 5:30! Then finally at 9:30 the manager told us that they were overbooked and sent us to a much inferior B&B that we had to find ourselves, which was also overbooked. We ended up finding a place by 11 that night ourselves and are still fighting to get our money back from the B&B we booked (B&B A Venice Emeralds). Booking.com was very unresponsive. Never followed up on my emails, I had to do all the calling. I think it's a bad idea to book with a company that makes you pay everything up front ($600 for us). Stay away from booking.com and B&B A Venice Emeralds !!

When I recounted our experience to friends, almost everyone had a booking.com horror story, that involved being ripped off.
