I've been a continuous member since around 2003 - I pay under £10 per annum.
I mostly enjoy using the site but, there have been mega probs since this time last year. Seems as though GR are trying to update to a more modern site but don't fully understand about genealogy.
The Community boards are a fantastic help with experienced members giving up their time and expertise to help other people. Many good friendships have been made on this site. Sadly, GR do not often make 'big things' about this valuable asset but keep on harping about the tv series they've sponsored.
On the other hand, newcomers are simply not reading the guidelines when they join - if they did, it would cut down on a lot of complaints.
My advice to newcomes would be:
1) only get the basic membership - I've never used the records on GR and most lines on my tree are back pre-1750.
2) for records, firstly get acquainted with the sites which are free - familysearch.org - freebmd.org.uk on-line parish clerks etc., and then use the community boards for help and advice.
3) To get the most out of the site use the boards and make sure you read the guidelines before you start posting.
