“Slow with WordPress/BuddyPress”

written by on 23/05/2012

The 123-reg service seemed to be, at first, very good. They server a number of email accounts for me, as well as a domain, which work brilliantly. Their support pages are excellent, and have more than enough information on them for decent operation of the service.

However, I do have to criticise the "123-apps" version of Wordpress. The default installation cannot be installed into the root directory of your hosting - it has to be put it into a subdirectory like www.example.com/blog, instead of just www.example.com. This required additional configuration, and greatly exaggerated the Wordpress "Famous Five-Minute Install!".

Once the updated DNS records had propogated to our own ISP, the site was accessible immediately. However, it was extremely slow, not only at a work connection using one ISP, but at a home one, using another. Other people using the site, or trying to use it, rather, reported trouble getting pages to load at all. In one instance, I was kept waiting for 10-15 minutes for just the Wordpress login screen to load up. In the 8 months since we have purchased hosting, the site has been barely accessible, with ridiculous loading times and a slurry of Internal Server Errors.

After dealing this week with the EU Cookie Directive, I found that a static webpage at /cookies.html loaded almost immediately, with no wait. Clearly, something here either relates to their PHP or their MySQL installation or configuration causing ridiculous loading times. At the same time, I was using FTP to upload my static html page, and found that the FTP connection was completely unreliable and constantly timed out and resulted in at least 45 minutes wait in total of me waiting to be re-authenticated to the FTP server after timing out.

I won't be going back to 123-reg after this cacophony of a year in terms of webhosting.

In summary:
Positives:

Good Support Section
Quick Propogation
Good Email

Negatives:

Terrible loading times for WP
Unreliable FTP
