Our first impressions of Mill Farm weren't great to be honest, I felt like we could have been greeted with more enthusiasm and that an advanced warning of the state of the road to the Trekking Centre would have been nice although we were escorted there for our convenience by another vehicle. (Although we do appreciate the state of the roads is not a reflection of Mill Farm).
This experience definitely improved once we arrived at the trekking centre where we were greeted by our leader, Josh. He was very organised- the horses were tacked up and we were fitted with body protectors (we brought our own hats but there were a large selection in the tack room for those who might need them).
The weather was particularly miserable and hailed and rained for the first half an hour before the sun eventually came out but the experience was made brighter by Josh's enthusiam about his work, the horses, the countryside etc etc... Josh was familiar with all of the horses we took out: Malibu, Paradise, Jack and Red and was able to tell us stories about their histories as well as various facts about them.
Although we consider ourselves to be advanced riders, the weather conditions unfortunately did not allow us to take full advantage of the brilliant trekking course; however we were able to ride through the forest, across a stream, beside the canal and across the beautiful countryside at a pace that suited all of us and ensured that health and safety were taken into consideration and we did manage to have a little canter right at the end. Josh was very considerate and spent time taking photo's for us throughout the trek.
As horse owners ourselves we were a little apprehensive about what state the horses might have been in due to previous experiences at other farms, however we were very nicely surprised to find the horses not only in good condition but also appearing to very much enjoy their work; tack was clean, well maintained and fitted well. The horses were wellbehaved but most certainly not plods and were obviously schooled to a good standard. The horses at Mill Farm are definitely loved by the staff and afforded a very high standard of care.
We would like to thank Josh and Helen for this lovely opportunity and although we live quite far away we hope to be able to come back in the future (and hopefully bring the sun with us!)
