“Horrible Customer Service”

I live in Portland OR, and my girlfriend lives in San Jose CA. We are flying to San Juan Peurto Rico where we both have a layover in Dallas. Since it is impossible to book two flights with different starting cities I was forced to book them separate. I have called and emailed AA multiple times trying to get our seats next to each other when we meet in Dallas. This is a very simple request, but AA is refusing to honor it. They keep telling me I should have booked them at the same time, but they don't understand that their system makes that impossible. I will never book this airline again, they can't honor a simple seating request to not split up the people in our party. This was a last minute request.
