“Online baggage allowance farce”

Written on: 03/05/2012

I have just returned from a trip with Thopmson to Jamaica and when i made the booking (flight only) i decided to take to piece of luggage and was charged £50 each, online Thompson has the option of up to 5 bags to check in and pre pay. On arrival at the airport in Birmingham i was told that i have only paid for the bags not the weight so the first piece of item that weigh 20kg is ok but for the second piece i will have to pay an extra £17 per kilo as that is over the 20 kg max limit for travel. Because i was travelling for a wedding i eventually had to pay £272 plus the original £100 i paid online.
I was appauled to find that Thompson is telling me that even if i had pre paid for 5 bags all i am entitled to carry is 20 kg between the 5 bags so in other words if i brought one bag with 20 kg weight and 4 extra bags i would be still charged £250 as all that i have paid for is the 20kg and some empty bags.
I then realised that i was not alone as i have seen more than 18 people that same mormin g oin the exact flights in serious distress because of the same issue, having to pay upto £800 extra for baggage, this mean they have spent all their spending money before leaving britain.
I have conducted a one to one meetings with all the passengers on the aircraft and taken all their contact detail and ask that they save their reciept to take this up with the airline so they can see that the information online is misleading and unfair and put passengers in a desperate situation and should be looking at refunding all thge passengers affected and make the information more transparent.
It is highly unlikely that this is a one off as too many other passengers were affected for this to go unchallenged.
