Our second week into Frontier's Central America Trail saw us cross the border into Guatemala, “the land of eternal spring”. Our first stop was the beautiful Isle of Flores, where we unwound in the warm waters of its huge freshwater lake and paid a visit to the ancient ruins of Tikal, one of the largest Mayan sites in the region. Unfortunately, despite a noble effort, we were comprehensively beaten in a 5-a-side match by some of the local lads and had to hobble back to the hostel with our tails between our legs. Lanquin was home to the El Retiro lodge where we lined our bellies before getting adventurous with caving by candlelight, tubing down rapids and jumping off huge swings into the Lanquin river. After all that, Antigua gave us some much needed downtime as we took lazy strolls through the wide markets and sampled some of the local “delicacies”. Our final day took us to Pacaya where we trekked up an active volcano and enjoyed some lava-toasted marshmallows. YUMMY! Next stop San Pedro la Laguna!
