This is my first experience of automatic renewal. My car has been off the road since Christmas, I am not driving due to ill health. I therefore did not read the letter from Admiral about renewing my policy with them carefully as I knew I did not want insurance this year. When I got my bank statement I found they had automatically taken the renewal payment out of my bank account using details I gave them last year. When I phoned to complain they said this is normal policy, customers are expected to tell them if they do NOT want to renew and this was written in the renewal notice they sent me. I wish I had paid by cheque last year. Now they are charging me £47.50 to cancel a policy I never wanted or asked for in the first place. I am never using Admiral again.
