“Overall Iams Dog Food have poor quality ingredients,...”

written by jimbo894 on 27/03/2005

Good Points
Good source of fat. The rest of the food has a lot to be desired.

Bad Points
Where do I start with Iams Dog Food? Most consumers are unaware of the fact that dog food companies can list ingredients by weight before they enter the bag. This can be very deceptive, especially when it pertains to meat listings. For instance, Iams list "chicken" as its main ingredient, but since it can be weighed before it enters the bag, it is weighed - before dehydration!!!! When it is dehydrated to enter the bag you lose 70% of its pre-bagged weight. "Chicken", though listed 1st, is actually the 5th ingredient. There are more chicken-by-products than chicken meat in this food. Corn is therefore the 1st ingredient which is a cheap filler with low digestibility (even for humans) and thus leads to higher stool volumes. By-products are exactly that... things people do not use, mainly feathers, beaks, claws, and bone, all very indigestible again leading to higher stool volumes and increased intake. There are many other great quality foods that use no by-products, wheat, corn, or soybean.. find them and use them, your dog will thank you.

General Comments
Overall Iams Dog Food have poor quality ingredients, deceptive labelling practices make this product a poor choice for consumers.
