“Makes sense, but only helpful if you can portion control”

written by on 14/03/2012

The basis of this diet is the non mixing of carbs and protiens on one day, whilst allowing 'syns' which can be 'spent' on anything, providing you don't go over a certain amount.

Now, the whole theory of the diet is great, loads of food choices, plenty of fresh fruit and veg all in unlimited portion sizes...herein lies the problem.

Most people who diet do so because they either eat the wrong foods in the wrong amounts, or they overeat...ok, it's a little more complicated than that, but they seem to be the two main reasons that people are overweight.

The idea of being able to eat what you like in unlimited amounts is appealing, but trust me, if you do what it says and eat lots of the foods...YOU WILL NOT LOSE WEIGHT.

I have just done a 12 week stint at SW on that very basis. I am a healthy woman, 10st 2lbs, 5'4" and a size 10/12 depending on the time of the month. I want to get back to my pre-baby weight of 9st 7lbs or at the very least, 9st 10lbs, which for my height, is not unreasonable or unattainable.
The problems is this, if you are an over eater by nature, this diet will not work for you. It has cost me over £60 in fees to find this out. Not to mention the money wasted on the books in order to cook SW recipes.

At no point did anyone say to me that you had to limit portion controls of these so called 'free foods'. I love lots of food, I like big meals and I only eat 3 times a day. I don't graze all day, I'm not a fan of chocolate or crisps and takeaways are not my thing. I struggle to lose weight because of my portion sizes, so chosing a diet where I didn't have to limit portion seemed the right thing to do. I'd tried Weight Watchers and felt like I would starve to death. (obviously that was never going to happen).

After not losing weight for about 6 weeks and following it religiously, my consultant Michele (who was lovely and a total SW Guru) then tailored the plan to eliminate me from having any carb b choices (on a red day) and upping my water as well as not going over my syns of 10. I didn't deviate from it, and still, I didn't lose.

Today, I went and weighed after having my plan tailored to 'not having a life' status and I am still well over my target, not losing even half a pound. I am unable to go out to eat at a restaurant, I can't drink alcohol on a night out and when my brilliant and totally health conscious boyfriend cooks for me, he uses only ingredients from a very strict list.....but I am still not losing.

I can't do anymore than I am doing and whilst I understand that many people find success on this, I have decided that SW is not for women/men like me who enjoy large meals. After all, that is all I can think of that would be causing me to stop losing. But no where does it state anywhere that portion sizes are to be limited, if anything, it talks of how you can eat when you like and how much you like.

I think the diet is a great one for people who aren't big eaters or who eat sensibly, but then if you do eat sensibly...would you even need a diet?

I won't be going anymore, £4.95 a week for nothing is pointless, and I would rather not spend every Wednesday trying not to cry at the utter despair and disappointment that I feel even though I have followed all the books and consultants advise to the letter

Obviously, many will disagree with me, and you cannot dispute that this does work for people.

I just can't help but remember the number of huge women that were in my class who have been attending for years and are yet to get to goal, rather chosing to use the meeting as a place to discuss food and drink coffee.

I'm going to limit my intake of food and cut back by watching my calorie intake and get some exercise. Makes more sense than giving my money away.
