Yasawa Islands, Fiji. What better way to spend a 12 week career break. To top it off, I was making a difference! I worked with both childcare and rain water harvesting. Both projects were positive in their own way. The childcare program was hands on, relatively consistent in daily activities, and offered the opportunity to build relationships with other Fijian teaching staff and students. The construction was great in that every day was also hands on, but every day was very different. It required flexibility on both the construction leader's part as well as the volunteers. Similarly, volunteers were able to travel around to different villages to get new perspective of scenery. In the 12 weeks I volunteered, I was able to work in three different villages. Down time on base was never dull. With 20 other volunteers/staff, there was always something to do like going for walks across the island, snorkeling, swimming, or just relaxing and playing a board game. I highly recommend GVI. It will rejuvenate your body and soul.
