“Unreliable service”

Written on: 02/02/2012 by Jackydu (1 review written)

I have all 3 different Caxton cards. I regard the card as a better way of access cash from my current account whilst travelling. I have never experience withdrawal fees abroad, so if I need more money I purchase currency on my Caxton card and then draw it off as cash whilst abroad.

Unfortunately it doesn't always work and therefore you cannot rely it. Twice in the past 6 months I've set up to buy currency and on both occasions the service failed. The first time I tried to buy US Dollars when I thought the exchange rate was good. It appeared on screen as though I had bought the currency, but it only became clear a few days later that the transaction had failed. Caxton did not notify of the failed transaction. The second even occurred just after Christmas when Caxton promoted a special rate for Euros. Again the transaction failed. I called Caxton and reported the service failure. The agent emailed to say she would help me to process a purchase but by then I had bought cash from another supplier. I have very little confidence that the Caxton website will complete transactions as expected, particularly important if you don't have regular Internet access whilst travelling, to keep checking up on Caxton.

I have had the card refused for fuel purchases in the USA, although the last time this happened was just over a year ago.

Another point of confusion in the US is that everyone refers to the Caxton card as a credit card. I always thought it was a debit card. Anyway, I recommend people to go along with this interpretation as debit cards appear to attract extra charges where credit cards don't. I always select the credit card option when using the card in the US.
