We flew from Berlin to Dusseldorf and Dusseldorf to Miami with airberlin and Miami to Denver with American Airlines on Jan 6, 2012. It was an award ticket through American Airlines. We had a 5-month-old infant with us. In Berlin the crew spoke little English, so when we asked for 'deliver at the gate' tags for the baby's stroller, they checked in the stroller as regular baggage all the way to Denver (we found out about it in Dusseldorf).
In Dusseldorf we were told the stroller was in the baggage claim. However, once we got there it turned out we wouldn't get it until Denver. Moreover, on the carousel we saw one of our suitcases that was supposed to be checked in all the way to Denver. Someone had removed a tag and it couldn't follow us on our flights. In Miami we had a 6-hour layover and nothing to put the baby in so he could rest or take a nap.
On the plane Dusseldorf to Miami we didn't get a bassinet for the child as they supposedly all had been booked. However, when we walked around the plane it turned out that only one was in use, while in other seats were people without any kids. We ended up sitting in the last row by the restrooms where seats could not be reclined. People in front of us had their seats fully reclined so we had them right in their faces. We struggled to accommodate the baby for 10 hours 40 minutes,be cause that's how long the flight was. The crew was very unpleasant when I asked for hot water to warm the baby's milk. They showed no concern for the baby's well being. I had never seen anything like that.
At the final destination we received the stroller all scratched and with cuts on the handles and only one of 2 suitcases. The other suitcase was delivered 2 days later with missing contents. I would not recommend airberlin to my worst enemy and will definitely NOT fly with them EVER AGAIN!
