We (2 Canadians) rented Hertz's smallest, economy vehicle for a trip around France (Paris, through Switzerland and Italy to Nice, over to the Spanish border, and back through Bordeaux). We received a Chevrolet Spark, a rare bird in Europe, but a fine car. It lacked in umph to get up the big hills in Switzerland, and the gas consumption was good but not phenomenal. There was a hot spot on the passenger side that kept burning our feet, our fault for having bare feet in the car?
Service at the desk was friendly and cordial. We were quite confident with what we wanted beforehand (the basic collision waiver and no more), and the sales agent pushed for more, but not too hard. The car was in good condition and we had no difficulties with breakdowns throughout our journey. The price was as quoted. The only thing I noticed that gave me a bad feeling was the elderly American couple beside us; the agent was telling them that to return the car without an empty tank would result in a charge of 120 Euros. She told them it was about the same price as a fill-up at a local gas station, but in fact it was about 3 times the price.
All in all, our vacation was pleasant and there were no nasty surprises.
