Our arrival via shuttle bus was smooth and quick but when I came to pay, the initial estimate of 47.78 euros had exploded to 163 euros. They said that it included 79 euros of diesel, 36 euros of excess insurance inc tax. I was completely shocked, firstly I said I had excess insurance with Mondial which I had purchased with the rental with Argus Car Hire, but they said that they didn't accept that insurance and I had to take theirs.
Furthermore I heard another customer say they didn't want to pay up-front for fuel, so I asked for the same and they said I could but only get a refund of 41 euros, because their basic car rates were different for customers who didn't take the car including fuel. I ended up paying 122 euros for six days for a small peugeot not including the fuel I used.
On my return I rang Mondial about the excess and they immediately refunded my initial outlay of £30. They said that a few car hire operators were doing this probably because they worked on commission and they were trying to sort it out.
I also had to pay the extra with cash because I only had a debit card, this impacted on my holiday and despite trying to not let it affect me, I did feel like I had been ripped-off and also I worried about my expenditure for the whole of my holiday.
