Upgraded from D50 to D90 following a progression from total amateur to someone who was starting to produce decent shots and really enjoy it. D50 was great but lacked resolution if the image needed a little crop, and user friendliness for the enthusiast photographer was limited as many functions would only be alterable via the menu. The D90 has a host of dedicated buttons on the camera body to change ISO, AF mode, Flash, depth of field preview, metering mode, aperture AND shutter speed separately etc. The CMOS sensor renders images with beautiful accuracy but more importantly consistency across a range of shots in similar conditions.
Never thought I would use higher ISO for macro shots, but the D90 has produced beautifully detailed images with no detectable noise at ISO 800 and more. Ability to create good photos has stepped up a notch. Downsides? At this price none. Perhaps the video, which I will not be using and have not yet tried but has received some criticism. Bought mine used - boxed as new - from MBP photographic for a bargain with part-ex on the D50 - consider it.
