“I have just used the polycell less mess for my hall...”

Written on: 04/10/2010

I have just used the polycell less mess for my hall stairs and landing. I bought 2 tubs and thought I'll just use a bit of one pot to test it. I applied this product in various thicknesses then scraped sections of these various thickness stripper to see what is best to do. I scraped them after 4 hours, after 6 hours and also after leaving on overnight, in fact my stairs are still covered in this product which has dried even more the longer you leave it. It doesn't burn your hand if you get some on but I wouldn't leave it on for too long as I reckon it's not healthy. I think the idea is that the makers are trying to develop a product that doesn't smear the floor or protective covers with melted paint, as this is a nightmare as I know. They have done this very successfully although it's not worked perfectly. I don't think it dries like crumbly as it describes, like becomes dusty or something but it's far removed from the smeared paint of other removers. I think it's overpriced, and I'd give you a tip: paint it on 1mm or more, let it dry for a full day (the longer the better. then scrape it off, the paint will crumble off easily, but only one coat! If you have other coats underneath, you'll find that it has barely effected these 2nd or 3rd layers. Just repeat the process and you'll find the wood fairly easily underneath. In conclusion compared to normal paint strippers, it's no mess as it says, but it doesn't take that much off, so you need to put more on, leaving a big hole in bank balance. I spent £100 on 9 tubs and I probably need more, this was about 5 times more than I would ordinarily pay, so if you only have a small area then it's ideal. Ideal as long as you don't mind very toxic smell for 12 hours.
