Orphan is a horror film that definitely takes its inspiration from classic 70's horror films like The Omen and Rosemary's Baby. Following the still birth of their third child, Vera Farmiga (Kate) and Peter Sarsgaard (John) decide to adopt and choose a rather spooky looking orphanage run by nuns (never a wise move in horror movies). They meet Esther, a nine year old from Russia who seems to stand out from the rest of the children and take her home. At first Esther is a sweet and very polite child who learns quickly and becomes a loving member of the family, especially their younger daughter Max who is deaf.

The story develops as Esther seemingly manipulates the family, using Kate's alcoholic past and John's past infidelities to drive the couple apart. There are horrific deaths and painful moments (the scene with an arm and a vice...) and a brilliant twist that I didn't see coming.
