“Beware of the "free" additional driver promise - it isn't!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 26/02/2024

I booked through Zest for the first time earlier this month because the competitive price included a free additional driver. However on collection at Salzburg airport I was charged for it. I have emailed Zest several times but am told my contract is with the rental company and not a matter for them. Whilst this may be legally correct, it is appalling customer service and I am staggered Zest did not credit me immediately. Zest continues to advertise free additional drivers which in my view is seriously misleading. Zest should seriously consider whether this aspect of its offering should be removed.

“Not a serious company - 3000 usd loss”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 297Dolan on 24/07/2023

This is not a serious company. I paid in advance the full value of the rental, summer high season in Italy, to avoid potential issues, to have my car available. It was a 2,500 usd fee. We simply picked the standard hour to have our car available (12pm) and when we arrived there the car had been let go at 1pm, and they are not refunding me. I had to search for and pay double this value for another car, which was almost inpossible. And Zest still says it was my fault because we did not arrive at 12pm and that I should have paid attention to the fine print. Do not be fooled by this company they are not serious and they are not the company renting the vehicles. My vacations were seriously disrupted and I took a loss of 3000 euro because of them. “Worst car hire company I’ve ever used ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Harrison322 on 23/05/2023

I did asked for rental agreement 6 weeks ago. I need that for the insurance people to look in to my claim. I paid for extra insurance to avoid unnecessary cost in case car get scratched or dented . I spoke with zest so many times and they still telling my to wait because they waiting for paperwork from Portugal Car4fun or something like that. I paid 350 euros for damage but despite that I paid extra for insurance they don’t care and keep sending me off. I would not recommend this car hire company. Just waisted so much of my time trying to contact them. I get no updates or nothing it is just ridiculous for customer to be treated like this. So do yourself a favour and find another provider.

“Useless! Triple Charged”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Zara274 on 23/03/2020

Useless!!! Booking made, paid up front and included the insurance. Picked up car, no problem. 4 days later a bill for over £300 whereby Budget had charged us again for the hire car. At the airport they asked us to sign something, without explaining what it was, we then paid for the car again, plus the hideous insurance amounts, paid 90 euros for Fuel??? We didn't know any of this until we got a pdf of the bill on email, they didn't give us a paper copy so couldn't contest. Zest will not step in to query why the amount we prepaid to them did not cover the cost of the car. So they just took our money and washed their hands with us. Basically, joker outfit, take your money on their website which doesn't go to the actual car hire company. Save your money and go direct. Worst experience of car hire ever! And that says a lot as we do this a lot, cannot believe we have been treated like this. Shame on you.

“Good customer service”

★★★★★

written by BellagioMarple on 02/04/2018

I have used Zest (and their previous guise 'Economy Car Hire' for many years when booking in Spain. As a broker they offer very competetive prices allow for a second driver on the booking free of charge, which is excellent. The top up insurance offered is also well priced. Ultimately they use the same car-hire firm that we have good experience of anyway (Autos-Aguierre) and this just helps with the booking. When they really came into their own was last year when I forgot to bring the credit card that I had booked with. I realised in the airport after checking into my flight and frantically phoned them. I was dealt with via a very polite customer service operator who took my details and made an effort to understand the problem. Within 10 minutes he had called me back to say that he had dealt with the car hire firm and that they would, in this case, honour the booking through my debit card. Excellent service and put my mind at rest for the flight. Now, it might have helped that this was something likle our 8th booking with Zest and the car hire company, so we may well have 'banked some credit' with them, but I have nothing but praise for the professional way that they dealt with our problem. Really good service and value for money - can't ask for anything more than that.

“Fantastic! Definitely 5 stars.”

written by RosieTh on 15/10/2017

We have used this company for 9 years without any problem and would not use any other. I recently booked car hire in Fuerteventura to collect and return from the airport then realised we could have collected it from our resort. I expected to be charged a fee for altering the booking but no. I'm sure most companies would have done so. The only problems we have ever had when collecting our vehicles have been with the local hire companies who have tried to pressurise us in to paying for extras such as their insurance when we had already paid top up insurance, trying to charge extra for a driver over an age limit when Zest cover up to 84 years of age and a company who said we would have to pay to cover breakdown of THEIR vehicle!! Don't be put off by the few bad reviews, we think they do a great job!.

“We booked with Zest as their fee, whilst slightly...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/07/2017

We booked with Zest as their fee, whilst slightly higher than other options, included an additional driver as standard. When we arrived to collect our vehicle the local operator refused to honour this agreement unless we paid an additional fee, despite us having the full paperwork with us and showing them where it clearly stated "one additional driver free of charge". When we got back home, Zest refused to accept any responsibility, refused to refund us any of the money we'd paid and sent us a rude email to boot. Shocking.

We booked car easily on Zest website and cad was at our hotel as requested at 10am next day. Local rental company (Portugal) were utterly efficient and clear about local tolls etc. We were able just to leave keys at reception at the end of the rental period. BEST car hire ever at home or abroad. Zest were recommended to us by a family member. Will always use them in future. Thank you Zest for making it cheap and easy!!!!

In short . I big surprise to have such a great service. After many hires this is probably the best and most reasonably priced hire I have ever had. The car was very new although not the model I expected. I will definitely use them again.

“Better fuel deal now”

★★★★★

written by on 26/05/2017

Staff spoke very good English and we were dealt with quickly. Thank goodness the new Zest has changed the fuel policy from returning the vehicle empty to returning it with the same amount of fuel, it was so unfair expecting customers to run on fresh air. The only other car hire near the border in La Linea is collection from the under ground car park but for ease would recommend Zest. Unsure why the deposit has now gone up from 300 euros to 600 euros, they must have had a few dodgy drivers!

I have used ZEST Car Rental for many years now and they have never disappointed me. Their service is superb and their rental partners(Spain & Portugal) have provided me always quality vehicles. It is great that their insurances cover everything which gives you peace of mind. I can only recommend them for customer service, ease of use of their website and the high quality cars I have been provided. Their prices are also very competitive which is a good benefit. I don't have anything negative to mention about this company, so far my holidays have been relaxing with some help of ZEST Car Rental. Keep up the good work!

we have been using this company for several years and find their service excellent. 1. we can get insurance cover for every eventuality - a must in those out of the way places where road conditions can be less than good. 2. highly competitive prices with good choice of car models. 3. deliver and collect vehicle to and from the hotel which saves trying to find your hotel driving on the wrong side of the road in the dark on narrow twisty roads on arrival. 4. staff always friendly helpful and calm

Economy car hire should not be rated car rental of the year! They have just tried to rip me off with a car rental. How come the website allows you to get the so called good deal and also allows you to book Saturday - Sunday on the website and then you receive a phone call and email saying 'sorry we are closed on Sundays' however, you can incur more cost to keep the car for another day. Even after agreeing to pay extra you are also hit with that fact that the debit card has been debited, however if you do not have a credit card you cannot rent the car so I am left with no money today and at the mercy of the bank to return my money before the weekend of travel.  Why didn't the website reject the card or clearly state credit cards only? Such companies should not be supported by Which.

Economy state quite clearly in their t&cs that a credit card with sufficient funds is required and a debit card is not acceptable. It is likely that the actual car hire company is closed on Sundays, and Economy informed you asap. While I am sorry for your difficulties,I suspect your problems are of your own making. Economy is an excellent car hire broker. i have used them over several years, the service has always been excellent and there are no hidden charges. They are worthy of their car rental of the year award.

It is common for the hire cost to be taken at the point of booking rather than on collection so I really don't understand the point at issue. We've used ECH for years and only had excellent service. Have you tried ringing them, or reducing the hire for a day rather than extending? Or switching the hire company. Talk to ECH and see what they can do for you.

Have used economy car hire for a number of years and never ever had any problems. I always pay by credit card and hair companies also insist on taking a copy of this and returning to you at end of hire. All explained in t&c of each. Would always highly recommend this company. On one occasion when I forgot to take my licence with me they credited my card with hire costs which they did not need to do

We have used Economy Car Rental regularly and I can honestly say have never had a bad experience. Once I wanted something really cheap and we got a lovely little car that didn't seem to use any fuel...the only down side was I only overtook one vehicle all week but it was great for getting around. The companies that Economy Car rentals use are all big companies with their own reputations to protect!

All car hire companies require a credit card. They take a copy I case you have an accident. They do not accept debit cards as they could be empty by the time payment is required. You do not have to have the car for an extra day, just take it back and put keys in box. These are standard with any car hire.

I suispect that you do not have a lot of experience in renting cars. Economy Car Hire is just a booking agency, which takes commission from the car rental companies it represents. It probably doesn't have a very strong negotiating position when dealing with them and accepts whatever terms they set. In any case, many of the major international car hire companies do not operate at every site where they appear to be in business. The local sites are often only franchisees, which is why you sometimes find one desk serving several apparently separate rental companies and why the make and model of car is rarely what appears to be offered when you make a reservation. If anyone is to blame, it's the rental companies for not having a franchise agreement that they do not permit to be varied in any way. Even if that were the case, you would still need to do your homework before you make a reservation - check the booking agency's terms and conditions AND those of the rental company that you are being passed on to.

I hired with them in Portugal in January and all the insurance was taken care of by them, no costs to pay, no additional payments to pay when we picked the car up. No problem with this firm.

Most car hire companies give some basic Crash Damage Waiver. However, many of the companies will now try to sell you extra insurance to cover the excess. They try to do this as you collect the car at the airport. The excess would be what you pay if you have an accident and varies from one hire company to another. You can by an annual multi trip excess policy before you go in the UK for about £35 -£40 rather than the 4 -5 Euros per day of hire, eg Direct car insurance sell such annual policies. If you have an accident you will more than likely have to pay the excess due but no more and then reclaim it in the UK.

Keep well away from this firm,  based in Southern Ireland,I would never use them again.Yes you would have to pay out and reclaim if your lucky.Their cars are old and full of dents,no offices at some airports, just a man in the airport compound. From past experience use Herttz we'll worth the extra and take out excess with your own car insurance in the UK.

My understanding is that if you have a problem, it's covered by the insurance company of Economy Car Hire. You do NOT have to pay and then reclaim the cost. Anyway, if you want to be sure, I'd call them to ask that question to them. By the way, the price you see in your quote is the price you pay (including insurance). There is no "hidden" costs. The only "extra insurance" is to cover keys, tires, glasses, mirrors which is not that much. I rented with them about seven times and I never had any problem. Their service is great. Have a nice trip !

My understanding of the Insurance is that Economy Car Hire would settle the claim on your behalf so don't worry about that. I have stopped hiring with this Company as the last vehicle that was supplied to me had two bald tyres, was 8 years old, had high mileage, the interior stank of body odour and there was a huge cigarette burn in the drivers seat. When I returned to the UK I found the Company's response to be poor. I have been traveling to Portugal for 25 years sometimes 2 or 3 times a year. Hope this helps.

I can't say that I blame you - we are all anxious about the costs of a possible accident in a foreign country. Bearing in mind that I am not an insurance or legal expert, here is my understanding of how the policy works: Rentals normally include full collision damage waiver and full theft waiver with no insurance excess. Sometimes, and they do show it when booking, rentals will be subject to an insurance excess but you can include an additional excess reimbursement insurance. If you have this, you need to pay any excess and make a claim for reimbursement. In any case, you cannot be charged for more than the excess on the policy, which I believe they normally set at £300. More of concern are the exclusions to the standard policies - damage to the tyres, wheels, glass parts and the underside of the vehicle as well as lock out cover, damage/theft/loss of keys, misfuelling and any towing charges that may be applicable in the event of a breakdown relating to the above mentioned items. You can cover this by a further premium: dearest if you do it on pick-up, cheaper if you get it on booking, and cheapest if you buy your own policy - mine cost me £35 for a calendar year. So for someone like me (and it sounds like you are in the same boat), the best thing to do is to add your own excess policy to cover everything that the standard policies might not cover. To me it is well worth the £35 per year! Hope that helps!
Report this content Portrush Written on: 11/02/2014
Normally when hiring a car you would be offered CDW insurance - Collision Damage Waiver - which means that you won't be responsible for any costs relating to an accident as you are insured against this situation. BUT there is usually an excess on this insurance (and it can be huge - up to £1000!) Therefore when hiring a car I always take out separate independent insurance to cover this excess risk. However when I hired a car through Economy Car Hire it appeared to be the case that there was NO excess on the CDW. I specifically checked this with them and I was assured that this was indeed the case. Therefore everything appeared to be covered. I assume that if you were to have an accident abroad when hiring through Economy Car Hire you would not have to pay out anything and then reclaim. DISCLAIMER - I give no guarantee that any of this information is correct and any decision made by you is taken entirely at your own risk.
Report this content Catullo Written on: 11/02/2014
We hired with them in Portugal last year and they covered the excess charges so there was nothing to pay in the event of a bump. However the car was second hand and had done 100,000 miles. My crdeit card was cloned whilst in Portugal and the only other time I used it, beside the hire company, was at a filling station with chip & pin. The hire company copied all the details onto their contract including the rear security number, make your own mind up USE A DIFFERENT COMPANY !! Hired last time with Carhire 3000 much better
Report this content Roadking54 Written on: 11/02/2014
I had the same experience. Everything is covered and taken care of. Couldn't really put that to the test as we had no reason to claim and the car was returned in perfect condition. Having said that I was worried about the cover cost for the motorway toll tag which had to be paid for up front even though we had no intention of using the toll roads. That money was returned to my credit card as soon as the local toll control confirmed no usage. With economy car hire you could end up with one of several local car hire firms that this agent use, so do some research and insist on the one you like. The Terms and conditions for each company policies varies, so beware.

Economy Car Hire are THE MOST reputable car hire company to use. Their insurance cover is second to none, and there are NEVER any excesses to pay in the event of a claim. In recent years, car hirers abroad have been asking customers to pay an additional charge for the cover of wheels/tyres/exhausts or windscreens, caused by the abysmal state of their roads (they should see ours)and not covered by their own policies. This is cheaper to cover with Economy Car Hire in the UK that by paying the hirer on arrival, but it does mean paying for damage to these items if it occours. Economy car hire will reimburse this without question when the invoice is sent to them upon return to the UK (again with no excess). Since it is only for these items there is little chance of a huge amount being charged, as the hire charge includes 'normal' insurance for the car itself. We have used them for years and have always had superb service, high quality cars and helpful, knowledgeable and pleasant staff at the UK office. We will never go elsewhere.

I am not fully sure. But they are a reputable company and have very good deals. I have used them a few times. I would phone and ask them. I also recommend taking out an annual collision damage waiver if you go abroad more than once. It means you don't need to pay extras at the airport. Type in Questor insurance to google, or collision damage waiver.
Report this content GrahamB6 Written on: 12/02/2014
They operate a waiver system but, in some cases, with excesses, set by the local company (from whom you are actually hiring the vehicle). You can check the excesses before you buy the deal. Like all companies I've come across Economy do not cover tyres, glass, keys etc. So, following an accident, you could have an excess payable in the country of eg 1000 euros plus non-insured parts. They offer excess insurance that also covers all the non-insured parts or you could use something like insurance4carhire. Sorry it's not a straightforward answer.
Report this content Lusophile Written on: 20/02/2014
First of all I can tell you that I have hired cars through Economy Car Hire in Portugal for about 10 years on average two/three times per year and have always found them to be first class - I can highly recommend them. the answer to your question (obtained from them) is as follows Regarding the insurance, our price includes a full collision damage and theft waiver with zero excess. Where specified some rentals will be subject to an insurance excess but will include an additional excess reimbursement insurance, so customers can make a claim for reimbursement in the event that they are charged for collision damage or theft. This information is clearly stated at the time of booking and can be found when you click on the ‘Show Rental conditions’ icon. The price also includes third party and public liability cover, a free additional driver and unlimited mileage. There are some exclusions to the insurance, the tyres, wheels, the glass parts and the underside of the vehicle are not covered as standard. However, we do offer an additional insurance to cover these items which is only £2.00 per day and can be added in step 2 of the booking process. The top up insurance works as a reimbursement policy so any damage done to areas of the car covered by the top insurance would need to be paid for by yourself. When returning the car and at the end of the hire you can contact the insurance company to make a claim for what you have had to pay for. In the event of an accident, theft or damage, clients must contact the car rental supplier immediately. A damage report must be completed by the driver for any damage to the vehicle, however minor it is.
