“McVities Digestives - Product Quality ”

Written on: 16/04/2012

As someone who has worked in the food industry getting on for 20 years, and for some of the UK's biggest brands, I cannot believe that the McVities Brand Team have allowed the current biscuit into the Supermarkets. The reduction in fat levels has reduced it to a fragile pile of crumbled mess that can only be damaging to this (previously) great brand. I've just thrown away approx. 30% of a newly opened packet - and this isn't the first time. Someone at McVities need to take action before… Read Full Review

What a disappointment it all is, A calamity! These biscuits were a part of life, I could not believe it would change, I thought it must be me, So I keep buying them, Then thinking we must be getting old stock down here Downunder, I have a freezer full of packets with just one out of them,
Crikey they are just nasty, A substitute for the most excellent tea biscuit ever conceived ,I think Not! , yes they should change the packet! these are not McVities Digestives,as we know them. They are crumb rounds for a bland cheesecake base.

“Very Good”

Written on: 25/01/2012 by lalalalala (1 review written)

I have been buying mcvities biscuits for years now, and have never had any problems with packaging of condition of the biscuits on purchase. I have however noticed that the price of mcvities biscuits is increasing, which tends to make people go for the cheaper 'non-branded' products. As a long-term customer i will be staying loyal to mcvities, as long as the price stays affordable i have no complaints!… Read Full Review

Written on: 28/02/2011

I've just phoned McVities customer care line to report the following problems with their product - (and also referred them to this web page) -

What on earth has happened with McVities plain digestive biscuits?

For several months I have been finding higher and higher proportions of broken biscuits in packets. At first I put this down to the idiots the local shops employ as shelf stackers. However, packets bought more recently from large retailers have been just the same and this weekend was… Read Full Review

Written on: 31/12/2010 by Johnehart (1 review written)

I say boycott the biscuits altogether until McVities listen. I have been eating and enjoying them until now for the past 20 years and have found the quality and taste steadily declining. I have sent my wife half mad asking her to shop at different outlets in an effort to find any of good quality. I have found that they vary in texture and colour, appear only half baked at times, and many are so broken i just feed them to the birds. As a child I used to buy broken biscuits for two pence - now I… Read Full Review

I agree, just don't buy them until they revert to the old recipe. The company is just covering their backsides because of "anti-fat" pressure groups when they say they are only reacting to customer's demands.

After eating delicious McVities Digestive biscuits all my life I can now only buy "New lowest Ever saturated fats-same Delicious Taste".....Wrong! The Trades Descriptions Act could be invoked here. They taste like a cross between longer baked Dog biscuits and ships Hard Tack. Where is the smooth, gently crumbing , rich tasting dunking biscuit of old? “In reply to the previous reviewers comments, McVities...”

Written on: 24/06/2010

In reply to the previous reviewers comments, McVities have reduced the fat content of their digestive biscuits and in my opinion this has reduced the taste and made them much more fragile. This is the second fat reduction in two years but I think it is a mistake. They already produce a "light" version so why not give consumers the choice and bring back the old recipe… Read Full Review

I found this review very helpful because... it mirrors my exact views.

McVities seem obsessive about FAT in their products. These are treat foods not staples. This is all unfortunately part of our overly controlling society, in our thoughts and our food. The pleasure has been 'healthed' out of their products, I never by them at all anymore and by luxury treats that still contain proper ingredients, such as fat and flavour !!!

Eventually we will be living in a world where we consume a government controlled diet of news religion thoughts and foods. Role on 1984.

they have no choice. In this day and age, peopel are health concerned. The united states spend the most int he world on health care and yet has the highest rate of noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular health diseases. Consumers are always told to compare nutrition fact tables and go for the lowest fat, lowest cholesterol, lowest calories etc. I think mcvities is willing to sacrifice the taste for a bigger fan base. If you compare many simliar crackers side by side, and mcvities digestive crackers are so much higher in all the "nutrients to limit", they are definitely going to plummet in sales and loose a large potential customer base.

The reduced fat content in McVities Digestives is not driven solely by health concerns. You can bet they have a laboratory working on making the biscuits cheaper to produce using substitute ingredients whilst monitoring taste with a panel of "experts". The price hasn't gone down so profits have probably gone up, meanwhile the biscuits aren't as good, taste off even when freshly opened and don't keep once opened. Shame on them.

Written on: 27/03/2010

We have been passionate consumers of McVitie's Digestive biscuits for years. Our house is seldom without a couple of packs (we always buy the twin pack). However, over recent months we have become concerned and disappointed by the high breakage level. Almost always, it seems nowadays, the first and last biscuit is broken - sometimes shattered - and frequently some further biscuits are damaged at the edges. Does anyone know why? Different packaging machinery? Less outer protection? Or more… Read Full Review

Written on: 28/02/2010

I was a big fan of Mcvities Digestivies until they decided to make the 'new lower saturated fat' version. I am all for healthy eating but not when it takes something away from the taste. The new version tastes abit like babies' biscuits, it's still crumbly but lost that full oaty/wheaty flavour, tastes too milky. Since the lower cal version exists anyway, please bring back the original for those of us who don't mind saturated fats every now and then!… Read Full Review

Written on: 14/01/2009 by ServiceFinder (10 reviews written)

McVities Digestives are the best biscuits in the world. Hob nobs are good, but a chocolate digestive just does it.

They work equally well with Tea or Coffee, or as a odd treat. But it is really in conjunction with the aforementioned beverages that this biscuit comes into its own.

Also you occasionally get offers (bogof or 1/2 price) on these in various food outlets.

Sublime! one of the best reasons to stick to the UK!… Read Full Review

Written on: 05/06/2006 by raehippychick (28 reviews written)

Is there anything more comforting than a McVities chocolate digestive? Now that the stunning summer is over (ahem!) and the days are drawing in, the nights get colder and darker, and I find myself craving comfort food. I love the food of my childhood; warm, cheap and cheerful with the occasional treat. I remember that our bedtimes were very comforting; a bath, a bowl of cereal and then a mug of warm milk with two biscuits while mum read us a story. This ritual was always made extra special if we… Read Full Review

I can also digest a Digestive here are some thoughts of my own! Seen as the most boring of biscuits by some along with the Rich Tea if not covered with chocolate they would go stale in the cupboard when I was young. Chocolate Digestive they would go down in one. These biscuits cost pennies every one sells them even the corner shop. I have always found a cup of tea or coffee is needed to eat a Digestive called a sweet meal on the biscuit itself.

Pull here tab opens the pack of biscuits successfully any one can do this no struggling as we used to do in the old days to undo the top stuck down with glue.

Round about 3 inches 7 cm in diameter brown in colour. They must be eaten fresh a day or two later they will go soggy. Crumbly and boring just a plain biscuit needs cheese or better still butter and cheese.

These biscuits make a good biscuit base for a cheesecake. Also good for the base of a lemon Meringue pie and for chocolate tarts.

My sisters and I live in the U.S. and we have loved this biscuit since our childhood living in the U.K. However, it is so expensive here. Is there any way of getting a box sent directly to my home of domicile here in the States? I say this because each of our household eat a package a week. I personally eat two. They are great during breaks and of course our tea time.
