“BTEC Electrical Installation”

Written on: 11/03/2012

I have completed this course. Generally the support from the tutor has been really good. His responses were quick and he always offered to help further if I needed. Unfortunatley the support from the rest of the business is poor and the systems are frustrating to use. For example when the tutor replied, he was limited to the length of the reply, help came in the form of serveral emails that I had to then stitch together. I have tried to ring student services to chase my certifcation but… Read Full Review

“Ics home learning”

Written on: 18/02/2012 by Kirsty80 (1 review written)

From the moment I started this course I have had nothing but bad experiences from this provider. I started the biology igcse course in october 2011 and throughout October,November and December I had no tutor support. I sent email after email to my tutor but received no replies. Every time I called student services I was given a different excuse, ranging from my tutor not having the correct email address to them being unaware that the tutor was in hospital. I requested a refund for the months I… Read Full Review

You say you've studied with the OU but you seem very ignorant/misinformed as to how 'home study' actually works. Did you expect them to put you in for the exams? Did you not READ the literature before signing up? NO distance learning provider will EVER put you in for exams. You always have to do it yourself. And yes, you have to pay. No matter which distance learner you go through for GCSE/A Level courses, you'll have to pay. Also, the idea of home learning is YOU decide how much to study each week. They give you an approximate count of hours and you're meant to look over the materials and decide for yourself. I am thinking you're just not cut out to be a home learner!

"Guest" and "Raejay" - You're both ignorant of the true nature of distance learning! I'm guessing you both work for ICS as you're obviously very passionate about defending them.
Some providers (obviously not the ones that you are "connected" with) will book your exams for you, and the exam fees can also be included in the initial course fees - Furthermore, some will also ensure that the exam centre is within your locality, and that the date they book for you is mutually agreeable...so where you get your information from, Lord only knows!
With regards to setting a study plan, yes, you can work at your own pace, and you wouldn't ordinarily be given "set" deadlines, but the assigned tutor would inform you of this if you were to get in touch. It appears that "Kirsty80" attempted to make contact on multiple occasions, but never received a reply!!
I'd suggest you read carefully next time you decide to berate someone...possibly on behalf of your own company??!

You obviously have no idea how 'home learning' works. Have you ever experienced it before, really? (I mean for A Level/GCSE) You always have to pay and put yourself in for exams. All the course provider does is basically provide a text book and tutor service. So yeah, you may as well have bought the textbooks instead. And if you actually read the details, you'd have known this. No provider on this earth will put you in for an exam, and pay for it as well. Also, they give you an average count of hours you're meant to do, it's up to YOU to read over the syllabus or flick through the textbook and decide for yourself. Hence the HOME LEARNING and IN YOUR OWN TIME ideal about these things. I am thinking you should've just found a college instead, you clearly have no idea what you're doing...

“EDI Beauty L1”

Written on: 14/02/2012 by ruth46 (1 review written)

The course materials - manual and book came in a package with some start up Beauty Express kit. Materials were easy to read and understand at my own paste. Plenty of challenging but interesting exercises. Totally enjoyed it! Very excellent picture illustrations in text book that helped with the unit assignments. Tutor support (Ms Pickering) and Admin assisitance were simply brilliant. They were there for me when I had difficulties (models cancelling appointments), gave me the right advice and… Read Full Review

Can anyone recommend how to go about this as I cant find anyone who can help me out. “Mis-sold, under-staffed and with a 4 month wait for help!”

Written on: 08/02/2012

My partner and I both signed up for courses with ICS at the same time. Living in the Middle East in a country with no postal service it was important for us that everything was electronic. When we called ICS we were advised by a course advisor that the course was entirely online. However, when we received the material it stated that assignments had to be mailed to their UK address. This was not acceptable to us because of where we live. When we contacted customer services they ignored our issue… Read Full Review

I completed a home study Diploma on Sports Psychology just before Christmas and found the books and learning material provided was very straight forward and simly to understand, at the end of each module there is an exam which must be sent each month to your own private tutor for marking and is then returned with your grade and any tips or advice they may have for you regarding your answer. The course was very easy to pay for in monthly instalments and easily affordable, i will definatly in the… Read Full Review

“Writing a bestseller”

Written on: 22/01/2012 by annabel55 (1 review written)

Course was perfect as I don't have time to do a regular evening class so I was able to study evenings and Sundays. The support given by my tutor was fantastic.Sometimes in the beginning, I felt like giving up through lack of confidence as I hadn't studied for years but she really encouraged me and made me feel confident in my abilities. The feedback was very constructive. I really enjoyed the course work and it was good to be able to work at my own pace. The course material was clearly… Read Full Review

“BTEC Advanced Diploma inConstruction”

Here is a copy of the email I sent them and their response: My email "I am working through Unit 40221B - Construction Technology and Design. I am a little concerned about how much I can trust the content of the course material. At page 21 there is a section about the role of the Health and Safety Planning Supervisor. This role was removed from the CDM regulations in the 2007 revision, as per the HSE website: http://www.hse.gov.uk/construction/cdm/faq/cdmcoordinators.htm. The information… Read Full Review

I enrolled on this course in March of this year and have started reading through the course material. As per the above review, I was stunned to read analysis of H&S statistics that are several years out of date and most of the information in the first of the four modules appears very old.

I queried with ICS whether the qualification was valid and they should have said that it would be retired in 2012 as potential employers may no longer recognise the validity.

I tried to submit my first test online on the 31st October and my login details provided by ICS are not recognised. I finally received an email from ICS today 7th November saying that they cannot find my registration. So I emailed back, and received an automated response to reply within 7 days. This is MOST UNSATISFACTORY!!

I teach for Cornwall Adult Education in a non-related subject and we are continually monitored on standards and content. We would never leave a student high and dry like this!! £500 is not a small amount to pay for a course in my mind, and I now wish to cancel. Did the above 'guest' successfully do this? I'd be interested to know and will be speaking to Consumer Direct about my request tomorrow.

“Tutors of ICS”

Written on: 19/10/2011

I've only been with ICS a few months. I am studying 2 A level courses. I have not come across any need to contact one of the tutors yet (haven't come across any essays yet! Yey!) Anyway, my other tutor, the one with whom I've had more contact with via Internet, is absolutely appalling! I emailed and asked for help on one of the pieces of work I was working on. I had a little plan, and asked for assistant and assurance that what I was doing was on the right lines, I asked for advice on anything… Read Full Review

“Professional Dog Grooming Course”

Written on: 03/10/2011 by ashleighhyslop2009 (1 review written)

I found that the customer service was poor if I had a problem there would never be an answer on the phone, they never replied to emails. I found the only way to get a reply was to place a complaint on their facebook page where everyone could see, didnt take long to reply then but they still took ages sorting things out. They somehow got all my details wrong even though they were all right on my account. I have done a little bit of grooming on my animal care course and thought the ICS course… Read Full Review

“Teaching Assistant and Autocad”

Written on: 05/09/2011 by pamelabellevans (1 review written)

In preparation for getting back into work after home teaching my son, I have studied two courses through ICS, the Teaching Assistant and Autocad courses. In both cases I was happy with the clarity and standard of the coursework, and the efficiency of tutors in marking and answering queries. I also used ICS as a source for home teaching, which allowed my son to gain some qualifications. I would recommend ICS to anyone who wants to study at home to gain a qualification. … Read Full Review

I am interested in doing the course NCFE L3 Award in supporting teaching and learning in schools because I want to get into teaching.I would like to know whether the certifiacte you received is awarded by NCFE itself or it is a certificate given by ICS n supported by NCFE. Have the certificate been any help to you for finding a job?

Hi there,

I don't know if you're still interested but Home Learning College do a course called "NCFE level 3 supporting teaching and learning in schools" and this qualification is awarded directly by NCFE. You should get two certificates once you've completed; one from the college and one from the awarding body (NCFE).

I hope this helps!!

“Photo Imaging, what a waste of time!”

Written on: 01/09/2011 by andymw (1 review written)

I started this course with a view to doing my very best in order to achieve a good grade. I achieved a distinction and a merit. However, when the final certificate is awarded by City and Guilds it only shows as a 'pass'! This was confirmed by ICS as being correct. What is the point of trying very hard to get a good grade when the certificate only shows a pass? Extremely dissapointed!!!!!… Read Full Review

After being made redundant I thought this an excellent time to progress with being a course that I have always been interested in and wanted to do! After finding the course that suited me, BTEC make up artist. I wanted to know more about the course and ICS were able to guild me and answer my questions every step of the way. I cost of the course was a little off putting as an incentive to join another course some sort of discount scheme would be very appealing. I would and have strongly… Read Full Review
