“Review of Thomson Cruises, Thomson Destiny”

★★★★☆

written by Bexley5 on 06/08/2011

This was our first cruise, and overall the holiday was excellent we all had a fanastic time, after hearing reviews of cruising we went with an open mind and found the destiny to be an overall sucess, the entertainment, the service, food and staff were all very brilliant and made the holiday even better. The inside cabin was very tiny and not a lot of space, in future references from my expereince i will upgrade next time but to their advantage they were always very clean and the house keeping staff did a superb job! The destinations were all very great, and we took some trips with the cruise which were all very well organised, and worth the money. Had a Great time and i would definalty book another cruise with Thomson.

written by marta pimm on 20/11/2010

We didn't like the Destiny at all! We had a cruise last year on the Thomson Spirit which we really enjoyed. The dining areas were lovely, the food was excellent and the entertainment was first class. That is why we decided to do another Thomson cruise but it will be the last one we take. The enterainment was not good at all - we've had better at Pontins at much cheaper price! The self service 'restuarant' was cold and not very welcoming. The drinks were ridiculously priced, £7 for a glass of mediocre white wine!! We were offered an all inclusive deal at £ 320 pounds which we didn't take as we're not big drinkers anyway but there were other people who had all inclusive at £49 . It was freezing cold in the Can-Can lounge. I had to wear a cardigan and wrap over my evening dress just to be comfortable.
The toilets kept blocking up and the swimming pool had to be emptied twice because it had been contaminated by sewage - once just as my husband got out which was quite worrying.
The redeeming feature was that the staff were friendly and the weather was very good which made our day trip and days at shore enjoyable.

We were first time cruisers and we had a fantastic holiday. We went on holiday on the Destiny with an open mind (after reading some of the reviews). Yes the Destiny is an old ship, but is kept immaculately clean. Staff, food, entertainment, all excellent. We found the passengers on board very friendly and all up for a good time. The destinations were all excellent, we took some trips which were very well organised, and we felt were worth the money. We really enjoyed Captains night, most people made the effort to dress smartly. Our teen aged kids really enjoyed the holiday too, there was alot of teenagers on board and they all seemed to enjoy activities on board. Really enjoyed our holiday and would cruise again with Thomsons.

“The Thomson destiny disaster cruise. We decided to...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by michael manning on 25/10/2010

The Thomson destiny disaster cruise. We decided to book one of the deluxe balcony suites, on the island escape after booking 10 months in advance we were looking very much forward to the cruise for 8 and a half months. 1st thing that went wrong was a thomson agent phoned saying our ship had been recalled for refubishment and we had the choice to change to the destiny (sailing the same time we had booked off work) or our money back, hobsons choice really. We were promised priority checkin by thomson and that we wouldnt have to queue to board the ship on our arrival because of the luxury cabin we had booked, At the port side we were told to queue like the rest as theres no priority checkin by this white suited arrogant crews officer. (didnt go down well as we had just waited for our lugage for an hour at palma airport.) On arrival at our suite 1st impressions were ok apart from the sellotape holding the wall light shades together as they were both broke in half, and the balcony french doors wouldnt shut properly so at sea this constantly whistled, on rough sea days the wardrobe and fridge cupboard doors kept opening and banging shut. not designed for a ship. also the radio was faulty. on the plus side our housekeeper was exellent (helen) and kept it ship shape and bristol fashion. seven seas dinning was a very rushed affair although the waiters were very pleasant. The food served was poor quality, badly cooked and weired concoctions. (melon with mint?) and there wasnt much choice, The lido cafe and grill was very poor, cold and transport cafe food, no tea or coffee making facillities at the lido grill, have to walk to other end to get one, and afternoon cream tea was very disapointing every day it was exactly the same weired plain scones butter biscuits and plain buns. on the up side we'd like to thank thomson for helping us to lose weight. we cannot blame thomson for the dull weather, but on the only sunny day we would have liked to go in the pool but low and behold the crew had decided to paint it, so we sat on the sun beds sipping mocktails with the wonderful added extra of paint fumes wafting in the air. Blakes bar apart from the fact that the whole evening long every single night the same act was on elena along with the shabby leather thread burn seats and square boxes covered in sticky back plastic peeling off in short morose act and atmosphere. cancan/oklahoma lounge the entertainment at best was amateurish maplins style, apart from one act the Comedian Buster who had us laughing on and off the stage, was a scream in the casino losing money together and singing to the carpenters. (Thanks Buster!)

We found the same thing repeated every night with the same people i.e zeal in oklahoma and top harmony in the clipper bar all week was all the same every day, apart from the first night the sail away party on the top lido deck party atmosphere loads of singing and dancing up there, didnt do it any other night! Almost every day we docked late in the ports we visited ie friday over an hour late so we had to dock outside the inner port in the industrial part of the port of barcelona, so our view was concrete silos, fork lift trucks, huge containers and workmen moving them about, we also had to pay extra to actually get to barcelona 10 euros in a taxi or queue (again. all weve ever seamed to do ) for 30 mins to get on a bus, The ship at best was dogged old and well past its sailed by date. after surviving the week we were told to leave our cases outside our cabins at 8'45 before we disembark and they would be taken off for us. At 9.30 on dock side we found our luggage,. One of our brand new cases had been smashed to bits. the bottom leg had been broke off. were the handle holder conects to the case snapped off and when you pull the handle up it came completely out of its sockets, therefore i had to carry this everywhere as i could not wheel it, if we'd have known they were going to throw them off the 8th deck, we would have carried them off ourselves, and when we told the white suited arrogant crew officer what had happened his responce was, "what do you want me to do about it,"! all in all our experience of this cruise was dire we would never book with thomson again not even for a day trip to blackpool. If you like carry on maplins style cruises at the same time paying top dosh, then this is the cruise for you. we feel cheated and conned which is not how you should feel after an holiday. Marks out of 10.......1

We also will be avoiding Thomson like the plague!!! First cruise (Caribbean 26 Dec - 9 Jan 11). Never again, the Destiny needs to be scrapped! I have written reviews on other sites - I hope they help other people make the right decision to stay well away from Thomsons. We, along with several other people we met onboard, were sold our 2 week cruise as being Child Free - it wasn't!!! It was child free for week 1 but not week 2. I booked directly with Thomson Rep on the phone and she kept saying how lovely it would be as there would be no kids. Not once did she say this would only be for the FIRST WEEK!!!! We had a great holiday due to the destinations and the people we me on board. Our cabin stewards Katya & Freddy were fantastic, and often made us laugh with their little jokes they played on us.

written by sguthrie on 15/10/2010

We had a great holiday aboard the Destiny cruise ship. This is our third cruise and cannot fault Thomson ships at all. Every member of staff were very friendly and helpful. The entertainment was fabulous and special thanks for a great time to Paul and Dave who entertained us every day. Food was great. Only fault was cabins a bit small but adequate as only sleeping in them. Would recommend this ship for a couples holiday as well as families. Noticed that kids were all so well looked after by the Kidz Zone team (even though we didn't have children with us). Welldone to Thomsons. Thanks again.

This was our first cruise and it will not be our last. The ship is dated and tired looking but, the amazing crew make up for all that. The food is fine and the entertainment can be great to so-so. the big problem is the cabin... tiny, though very clean and house keeping are stars. The locations are spot on mostly.. Livorno was like going to Bootle Docks..however it did lead to Florence. The reception had maps if you weren't using their trips.. very helpful. We loved the cruise and were sorry to leave.
R and N Liverpool. PS Thomson include a very good brochure with your tickets, luggage tags and info about tours and ship.

As a first time cruiser with my family, as i was a little apprehensive about taking 3 children (7,4 & 1) on board a ship, where their entertainment would be limited.
Though having just returned from sailing aboard the thompson destiny, my apprehension was unfounded. The cabin was extremely comfortable, and cleaned twice daily. The food was excellent and plenty of variety for fussy children, in all restaurants.
The staff were friendly and made a fuss of my children, and making animals out of the napkins for them in the morning at breakfast.
The entertainment was excellent and of broadway standard and on some nights exceedingly superior. We did not use the facilities of the club for the children (so i am unable to comment of this) as they did not wat to join the club.
Myself and my family normally travel to known locations, but found this cruise, both educational aswell as enjoyable to all the varying locations in one week.
A highly recommended holiday, for both adults and families alike......

“This was our first cruise and really did not know what...”

★★★★★

written by on 10/07/2010

This was our first cruise and really did not know what to expect. it was for our 25th wedding anniversary and was looking for something a bit different. We had the time of our lives. Probably the best holiday ever.I don't usually do reviews but I was compelled to let others know what is on offer here. This must be the friendliest crew and the happiest bunch of holiday makers I have had the pleasure to meet. We are both well traveled and have done a number of holidays all over the world so please take note. So the ship is old. 27 years to be precise. But it soon become an old friend and we called it home. Yes it needs a refit and it is not like the big old super cruisers, it has heart and is so clean you could eat your dinner off any part. the cabins are small but how long to you stay in them. The shower had me in stitches every time I used it and i got a great nights sleep every night. I see complaints about the engine noise. No issues here, most of the time we forgot we were on a ship. The food was fantastic and runs from 7am until 2am the next day in a number of catering outlets. The staff are magic. thanks to Big Willy and Zaw in the seven seas each night we laughed and laughed, this was a show on its own. I would have paid west end prices to see the shows in the can can lounge, they were excellent. The entertainment team was professional and went out of there way even completing port walks to avoid us having to do some tours. The waiting staff were always on the ball when delivering your drinks to your table, I only went to the bar once in seven days. To say Thomson have got this package right is an understatement. We are going back next year and hope to meet again all the wonderful friends we made. If you are lucky enough to go on this ship keep an eye out for the towel animals made each night by the cabin staff. We swapped photos each night with our table friends and had competitions on who had the best. One word of warning. If you don't mix with others well or are a miserable person, don't go, you will just ruin it for the people who like a good laugh. Thomson have thought it all out and nothing is a problem for anyone on board. They are there to help and they do. There is no tipping and no expectation from you. I gave our cleaner 20 euros on our last day and got a hug. This ship is full of UK inhabitants and yes getting a sun bed is no problem. If you want a ship with over two thousand people and a climbing wall that is full of Germans go on another super liner, this is not for you.

I am go to the Caribbean with Destiny in December and I booked at the last minute a few days ago. I am now worried about engine noise as I think I have an outside cabin on Deck 2. I am a very light sleeper and I am going on my own but from this review I expect not to be lonely.

Our 2nd trip on the Destiny and we loved it. Same service as last time, just a little dissapointed with the shows and the comedian. Apart from that the service & food was superb. The ship was spotlessly clean.Sunbeds were always taken with people putting towels on for the day, but you get that in all hotels too.

This was my first cruise on the Thomson Destiny and it has been my best holiday ever. I had read reviews and was a little concerned but I needn't have been. The ship and ALL of it's staff were absolutely brilliant. The food I couldn't fault. You could eat in the restaurant or the lido and the food in either places was excellent and food was availble almost 24hrs a day!
The entertainment on board day & night was of a high standard, there were a number of bars you could relax in and provided something for everyone. Tess our cabin maid was 10/10. She kept our cabin immaculate, she folded our towels into a different animal each night, my husband tried to do the same, so this created a bit of humour between us. We loved the destinations that we woke up in every morning. There is nothing I could fault and would recommend the destiny to anyone. Those that didn't like must be hard to please.

written by on 13/06/2010

We have just returned from a weeks cruise on Thomson destiny on the Mediterranean renaissance cruise and did not enjoy it as we had not 1 nights solid sleep due to the intrusive engine noise and vibration .The crew ( very friendly ) and food and cleanliness was excellent as was the condition of the cabin ,the ship seems to centre all of its service on the seven seas restaurant ,and the rest looked after themselves .I never saw 1 photographer in or on the other areas except were diners in the 7 seas dining area were ( not that I am vain ). We spent most nights listening to the engines and feel parts of the cabin furniture rattle about and could even ring the fitter to tell him that the engine was misfiring and this accompanied by the vibration spoilt the whole tour ,we have done over 4 cruises and found this to be the worst and would not return . We walked around different blocks of cabins and found the noise + vibes worse in other areas so we it could not have been isolated and the smell of fuel often carried around the lower floors ,we stayed on deck 2 midship and this should not affect the quality of your holiday as my money is a good as the next man . The smell of fuel often blew around deck 7+8 on the starboard at certain times and we will pass on our feelings and comments to the local Thomas Cook agent.

I found this review not helpful because on these old fantastic ships you learn with age and paying more is the best.
I have been on six ships owned by Thompsons over the years and our family of 4 did sleep low down on deck 3 but we didn't complain it was fun and it's what you make it.
You don't sleep below deck 3 unless you have paid a cheaper price or young and not bothered.
These ships are old and you should have asked about noise when booking and if you only pay low cost thats what you get and you shouldn't complain. Looking forward to another cruise in August on The Destiny with good food and great company and dancing and not sat in our room complainig.M

“Thomson Destiny May 2010 - Jewels of the Med ”

★★★★★

written by on 06/06/2010

Thomson Destiny May 2010 - Jewels of the Med
This was our first cruise and won't be our last! We are a family of 4 with 2 children aged 6 and 7 years. We have thoroughly enjoyed every minute. The ship was extremely well kept and clean plus a crew of helpful, friendly people. We had an inside cabin but managed fine with the space and layout, shower time was the most hectic but this only lasted an hour each evening. The housekeeping service never failed to deliver, each time we left our cabin they had been in tidying, restocking the drinks as well as creating some very interesting animals with the towels! The ship was generally fairly informal however we along with many others did make the effort on Captains night which was great. The kids as well as us loved the shows and the fun following them in the Oaklahoma lounge. The food was great as was the service, the kids got to choose from a children's menu which was good as they are fussy! During the day there was loads to choose from, the cakes and cookies were delicious in the Lido cafe in the afternoon. There seemed to be plenty of sunbeds for everyone during the day, the only negative is that the pool was absolutely freezing. We did pre-book the cabin before we sailed and chose one at the front of the ship on deck 3. We did experience some movement on two occasions throughout our travels but I don't think it was any worse in the cabin than anywhere else on the ship. I would advise you to take travel calm tablets with you just in case as it is quite expensive to buy them on board.
The places we visited were lovely especially Corsicca, Cannes and Barcelona. We did book on a Thomson tour of Pompeii and it was well organised however it did cost over £100 for the 4 of us for a morning. We weren't massively impressed with Sicily or Naples but this is a personal preference. Ajaccio is stunning but you don't get that long there. In Cannes we took the train (ourselves) to Monaco and Monte Carlo which was beautiful. Be careful with the train times as the 13.08 train that we wanted to catch was cancelled which didn't leave us very much time before the ship left Cannes, we only had 15 minutes to get from the station to the port! Barcelona is stunning, we took the open top bus tour which cost 77 Euros for the 4 of us. It was well worth the money as we got to see most of the sights whilst getting a tan on the open top bus.
Thomson Destiny is a friendly, appealing ship. We will certainly be looking to do another cruise soon.

this was our first cruise and we have already booked for the thomsons destiny next year. Could not compliment staff enough, entertainment first class food okay. I have been reading some of the reviews from people who must have been on the same cruise as my husband and I and I am mistified to know where all their complaints came from, my conclusion is that some folk just love a good moan, I say to them, get a life.

The DESTINY Is perfect in everything exept for one thing.
The dinning area at LIDO was abserlutly freezing (no covers on the front of the ship) Even the staff were complaining, I filled the survay in.
I complained at Thomsons at home.(they gave me a phone no to complain and what did the girl say "was it cold weather or you should have asked the crew to close the tarpaulin.

“This was our first time on the Destiny...and our last!...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 22/05/2010

This was our first time on the Destiny...and our last! It was dreadful. The entertainment was abysmal..poorly designed and staged shows with entertainers who couldn't even sing in tune! The All Inclusive package had changed the day we boarded, so was not what we had purchased. (Breach of Contract? )..and working it out we certainly did NOT have value for money but Thomsons did averaging at leat £70 profit from us alone! Besides that there were too few staff on board especially drinks waiters...strange that..Also the ship was jaded and in need of refurbishment. We complained about the standard of our cabin(eg.very noisy and a smell of diesel), and asked for an upgrade which we were quite willing to pay for, but were told there were no other cabins available. When I made a written complaint we were informed within a very short space of time that another cabin was available. Hmmm!
Everyone on board was complaining at the changes and poor standards. I feel Thomsons will lose very many loyal customers due to the poor quality of this cruise. In the past we have always enjoyed our cruises with them, but will be looking towards other cruise lines for future holidays. Shame on you Thomsons!

We were on the same cruise and we agree that the ship is past its sell by date but to say that the entertainment was poor is ridiculous. If the person that wrote the comments had been on any other cruises they would realise that Thomsons ships have the best entertainment. The entertainment staff on this cruise were the most talented that we have ever seen and they worked tirelessly to get invloved with the passengers, after the show the dancers and singers were in the Oklahoma Bar and the Clipper Bar talking and dancing with people up to 1.00am.

This was our first cruise, as others have mentioned the ship is a little dated, however we had a fantastic time. The staff are helpful and freindly, the food was excellent.
I am not a fan of shows but my wife went to see many of them and said they were very good, the entertainment on deck was good considering they have to appeal to a wide age range and there are enough places on the deck away from the entertainment if you wish.
Overall exelent holiday and would go again.

“I have just returned from the desting having been on...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/05/2010

I have just returned from the desting having been on it several times before. What a disappointment. All inclusive drinks package is a sham. There are supplements for almost everything and they are watered down as well as given in tiny glasses full of ice cubes. What a joke the all inclusive package ghas become since changing from 1st May 2010. Do not buy one as it will still cost you a fortune with all the supplements, even tea, coffee, soft drinks as well as most alcoholic drinks. The entertainment on board is a joke. Noise seems to be the theme now on this ship. The new band ZEAL belt out music that is suitable for a night club in the middle of nowhere. This is at the poolside during the day at a noise level that is totally unbearabe. They appear to have employed kids off the street to entertain us and it is not funny anymore. Stick to the theatre and you might just survive. Everyone on this ship was complaining and we didn't hear of one happy customer. Most said they would complain. They have put prices up on everything yet cutback on everything. I used to be a regular passenger on Thomson having been dedicated for 20 years. I will never travel with them again. Very disappointed. I am 49 and the noise was totally unacceptable. Passengers were seen walking around with their fingers in the ears to block out the noise when walking to the lido. This ship has gone downhill and appears more like a 2 star hotel on an clubbing island. I would recommend Thomson get rid of the new band bring back TOP MEN, PICNIC or some other decent band, abolish the new drinks package and bring back the old one, employ or train suitable entertainers who can do their job effectively. Dave Beattie is excellent, give him more pay and more work as he is value for money. Stop the young staff from begging for drinks from passengers and inform them that they should not swear, skit and mock passengers. One passenger was called an Irish scoundrel for winning the bingo and you'd think the bingo winnings came from the bingo callers pocket when they had to pay the winner, they begrudged it expecting free drinks from the winner and going on about it. Have these callers not seen smalls sums of money before. They are obviously paid too low but what can you expect from their experience. The entertainers in the can can lounge are ok but what a disappointment. Take ear muffs for poolside lounging and in the Oklahoma lounge. One good thing you can always get a seat now by the pool and in the Oklahoma lounge as the noise is too much to bear for the deafest of passengers.
