We also had problems in that the smart box apparently kept sending out alerts to the company, they contacted us and said had we been tampering with it. We had NOT. An engineer came and said he had no idea how it could have been working as it was wired in wrongly. Next quarter my son's premium was increased because his driving had 'deteriorated'. Argh.
NOTE - if you change car they'll charge you to move the smart box. If you simply don't renew they de-activate it at no cost. Derrr. Read all the small print VERY carefully!!!

“Cancellation fee of £400?!!!”

Written on: 17/08/2012

Make sure you read the ever so small fine print on any contract with Co-Op. My sister had to sell her car due to moving; when she tried to cancel the insurance (paid up front of a year) and claim back the outstanding amount she was informed that her cancellation fee was £450 and the refund was £400, so she owed them £50 for cancelling the insurance. She had no choice but to leave the insurance in place on a car that she no longer even owned. A complete and utter rip off. Avoid, avoid… Read Full Review

Make sure if you are under 25 that you dont have a accident with this insurance company as there is and automatic excess of £200 plus the £100 standard plus your voluntary excess.. They do not put this at point of sale and i was an unlucky 1 to have to find that out the hard way.. It isnt until u access you cover note online until you find out about this extra charge. Also for any accidents they do not take speed or the use of driving whilst on a mobile phone into consideration so beware!!!!!!… Read Full Review

You pay the initial premium, then depending on your dashboard score, you may be payed back money on on good safe driving,or be charged more money for poor driving, or stay the same with standard driving.Sounds fine so far, howevever should you for any reason not be driving the car, eg. car of the road for repairs,go away on holiday, stop commuting to and from work,or decide you will use other forms… Read Full Review

“LET ME SPEAK TO A HUMAN ”

granted once you actually get a human being on the other end of the phone "some" can be rather helpful and actually try and sort your query out for you. But getting through to these people is more or less impossible as there are way to many hurdles to get through first (automated options) in the end i just press any random number on my phone to get through to someone and they pass me to the department i need to be at, im sure everyone does this. yes they are designed to filter people to various… Read Full Review

“insurance con artists”

Written on: 20/06/2012 by Selhurst987 (1 review written)

This company is a disgusting, opportunistic insurance shark that prey on young drivers struggling to find cheap insurance. My brother works hard and doesn't earn much money and this company is now cancelling his insurance because he failed to act upon emails which he was unable to receive (our internet has been down for some time) and which he received no final notifications by post, only the one letter outlining that his contract was to be cancelled. As a result of this, I have contacted… Read Full Review

Agentkitty's Response to Selhurst987's Review

Written on: 24/06/2013

The exact same thing happened to my son. He has had problems with his e-mail provider and I only found out that they had cancelled his policy was when I checked my on-line banking account and found that Coop had refunded part of the policy. When I rang to query this the lady on the phone said that they had sent e-mails asking for documentation that had not been received. All well and good if the e-mail connection had been working! I would have thought that if they do not get a response then common sense would prevail and they would send you a letter asking for the documentation within a certain timeframe and then cancel the policy. Most 18 year olds, especially those still living at home, are very naive and most are not really competent at dealing with these sort of issues and I do feel that the Coop has taken full advantage of this. My son now has a car that he can't afford to drive and will have to sell.

“Do not use”

Written on: 02/05/2012

I, like many others, didn't think much about my car insurance until i needed to use it. I was not at fault and it was a simple accident in the case of the other driver so therefore no drama in terms of who was at fault etc. Dealing with the co-op has been an absolute nightmare, i was on the phone for six hours (granted broken up by about 20 different calls, with about 40 different members of staff) in two days. Arranging a courtesy car from their recommended dealer, Albany, was also terrible… Read Full Review

“Cheap but beware changing mid-term”

Written on: 26/04/2012 by KevinReading (1 review written)

I took out car insurance with co-op eco insurance as it was cheap, provided the cover I wanted and was a recognised name. Problem 1. Part way through my policy I changed jobs and needed to add business cover to my policy because I had more than one fixed place of work. They don't cover for business use so I was stuffed. Problem 2. I sold my bog standard Astra and bought a new bog standard Peugeot 207 with 3 months remaining on the policy. Unbelieveably they wouldn't cover the new car on my… Read Full Review

Paid for my policy online after enquiring by phone about it. There I was told that online I can choose whether I want the policy to be sent by email or post. On the entire online process I did not come across this choice so I thought it will be sent anyway by email and post as I would have needed the policy the same day in order to get a tax disk. “terrible customer service”

Written on: 05/03/2012

I was happy with my car insurance quote and went with the Co op last year. They promised 250points on my membership card but I only got 83points!! I was happy with my renewal quote this year until I informed them that I would be driving less miles this year as I have moved closer to work. Silly me, I thought being on the road less would reduce my premium as I am less likely to be involved in an accident but no! Apparently my car is more likely to be stolen as it's outside my house longer so… Read Full Review

“NO INSURANCE REQUIRED”

Written on: 01/03/2012 by lizduffy (1 review written)

I was insured from February 2010 to February 2012 with Co-op Car Insurance. This year I shopped around and decided to go with Saga Car Insurance. I came home today to find a Certificate of Motor Insurance 2012 to 2013 from the Co-op. I didn't request it and I don't want it. The first months payment has been taken from my account and I am told I will have to pay a £20 cancelaation fee - is this legal? Can someone advise me how to get my money back?… Read Full Review

cancell your direct debit return the certificate of insurance and send them a copy of your saga insurance cert with a covering letter stating that the insurance should be cancelled from the starting date of saga this is assuming that you told them in the first place not to renew. Take them to small claims court, I've done it several times with different companies and won every time. You pay £35 but you get this back when you win. They are required to use a lawyer, you don't have to, so it costs them much more to go to court than to settle. You can do this on-line, but make sure you follow the procedures properly such as send in the documents at the correct date, don't delay, and make sure to give them a letter (recorded delivery) saying you will take them to small claims court if they don't get back to you with the refund within 14 days.

If they took the money from a reputable credit card, most credit card companies allow you to bounce any charge you haven't authorised.

“House Insurance - Making Signing up Hardwork”

Written on: 28/02/2012 by TonySomerset (13 reviews written)

House Insurance, Building and Content. Not the cheapest Insurance around, with fairly frugal levels of cover and certainly they make it hardwork to apply. The badpoints: A clunky online website, managed to boot me out without saving my quote. Returning the online quote webpage failed to load. Called the only telephone number I could find. No website help line. No fast-track to a human and had to sit through five minutes of irrelevant explanatory matter before finally got a human to speak to… Read Full Review

“Beware automatic renewal”

Written on: 21/01/2012

My wife took out a new policy in Jan 2011 over the phone. As she did not have enough money in her account I paid for a years cover on my card. The Co-op kept my card details and took out this years policy from my account without contacting me. This was not mentioned when I spoke to them last year. How can they take money from my account without my permission? (leaving me overdrawn with subsequent overdrawn charges). Trying to resole this over the phone was a waste of time, with their operator… Read Full Review

Yup, another victim of this blatant insurance industry fraud here. Something really needs to be done about car insurance inertia selling (aka "automatic renewal"). Insurance companies unswervingly try to portray this vile and deceitful practice as being a 'service' to forgetful customers, rather than the reality which is that it is plain old inertia selling fraud.

If you or I tried to use someone else's credit card without explicit consent, we'd quite rightly be arrested for fraud. Insurers who act this way are as big a bunch of scum as those salespeople that dodgy utility companies got caught employing a few years ago: you know, the ones that were heavily fined for mis-selling gas and electricity deals to OAPs, often without obtaining consent. Jack Straw had it right for once: the UK car insurance industry is rotten to the core, not just because of nefarious practices like selling claimants' details onto ambulance chasing companies as he highlighted, but also because of their blatantly illegal commercial practices like inertia selling. I fear it'll take some of the worst individual offenders working for the sales departments of these companies to go to prison for fraud before it will finally stop.

In the meantime, I recommend anyone that's been affected do as I did: recoup any payments taken via your Direct Debit or Credit Card guarantee scheme, then complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service. By making a complaint, you will cost the company involved £500 in arbitration fees, even if they win. Don’t worry about debt collection agencies coming after you or damaging your credit rating: nobody listens to these inertia-selling con artists any more, they are afraid to go to court, and in my case my recouping my money didn’t do me any harm whatsoever credit-wise. I also won my case when I went to the FOS.

“Absolutely terrible”

I purchased a Co-operative Young Driver insurance policy in May 2011. They promptly fitted a 'black box' into my car and I was promised that I would receive a proportion of my premium back every three months if I drove well. After my first three months, my score was 5 out of 5, however I hadn't received any money back. They agreed that I was owed £96.49 back and they paid the money back on my credit card. Great! So why the one star review? They admitted in writing that the money was owed… Read Full Review
