“Quick, stable and a hell lot of fun!”

★★★★★

written by Tracei232 on 20/08/2014

My daily YPVS driver... It revs up nicely to 11000 and even though that it is a reliable monster for a 2-stroke! You treat her nicely and she'll treat you like the king of the road, 100mph+ with this baby and six gears with a very good gear ratio. The oil pump for the 2 stroke oil is reliable and feeds in through the carb or special intake. Very good oppurtunities to tune it for higher speeds, better acceleration and ofcourse fuel efficiency. The YPVS makes sure the exhaust port duration is a variable during engine speed making sure you have a strong and reliable bottom end while allowing you to have a nice peaky top end! It corners quickly in and out from the corners and still keeps stable on high speeds if you make sure to give it some nice tyres, extremely easy to take apart and put back together and as a bonus many parts are interchangeable from sports moped like the RD50, FS1 and those likes which can really make it cheap to get parts for. Suits me as a 172c short rider very well and is mighty light making it a blast to throw around. Handlebar has a really nice height and a decent enough controls set. The only drawback I see would be that you might just have to fun riding it ;)

“Well my rd125lc is a black and red mk1 in mk2 colours...”

★★★★★

written by on 16/08/2010

Well my rd125lc is a black and red mk1 in mk2 colours and i love it. its fitted with a rad guard, allspeed, reeds, ported amongst other things. never really thrashed it but i usually put it into 5th at 75mph on A roads with that gear and 6th to go. Never had a problem with it except the previous owner fitting it with s**t engine parts and the piston disintigrating but easily sorted. they have very good build quality despite what some people say and parts are always available with massive online shops. They will just go up and up in value and will out perform nearly all 125's and still be amazingly reliable. mk2/3 are a lot better handling then the mk1 so i would say a mk2 it the one to get as mk3's are so rare and hard to come by its got to be one of the best bikes i have ever owned and i plan to keep it for a very long time. i would seriously reconmind one of these.

Great handling,Voted best 125cc machine of all time.Still looks good today.especially m2 or 3 with its lower looking front end.comfort ,reliability and great build quility.Tough engines and reliable power valve(pv was patented and was simple and bullet proof ,unlike suzukis which were made from chocolate.A very good engine to tune so many were thrashed and moded in a year or two.I have a mk2 ypvs and looks 6months old if that. Yamaha RD 125 LC great for turning heads.

“I bought a 1984 mk1 model Yamaha RD 125 LC and have...”

★★★★☆

written by danrd125 on 10/03/2009

I bought a 1984 mk1 model Yamaha RD 125 LC and have still got it to this day. if i had a pound for every time i've heard "i used to have one of those". I've always found the handling to be be good but with a fork brace added to the mark 1 its a much better machine. The bike is designed well but everywhere you look it has those awful cross head bolts, i changed mine for stainless hex bolts, i suggest you do the same. I would recommend anyone whos thinking of buying one to get either the mk2 or mk3 as they are much more forgiveing, not to mention the powervalve on the mk3. Good looks, Handles well, reliable, quick. Only bad point is build quality.

“i bought my Yamaha RD 125 LC fully restored,...”

★★★☆☆

written by danrd125 on 19/02/2009

i bought my Yamaha RD 125 LC fully restored, completely original. i have had nothing but trouble with it frame wise the bike is very good. the main trouble i've had is engine problems. what started as a tiny little noise turned into a catastrophic failure of the gearbox . Bear in mind that nearly all of these bike have been thrashed to death, as strong as they are they are not indestructible. i suggest if you are looking for one i would factor in an extra 159 quid to cover an engine rebuild, purely for piece of mind. be before i had these problems it was a very nippy bike i never took mine over 8000rpm because of the noise but its definitely no slouch.

written by on 11/02/2009

The Yamaha RD 125 LC has good power after 7,000rpm and light easy to handle brakes not to bad.. I've got a full power rd125lc (1983 model) has been super tuned 27bhp,not bad at low rev's under 6,500rpm need to change down to 2nd on steep hills, but once you hit 7,000rpm then it all goes off power wheelies in first (wether you like it or not) can wheelie off the power in 2nd with a bit of incouragement.dont know how mines geared but does 30 in 1st,50 in 2nd,70 in 3rd,90 in 4th and top speed is 105mph in 5th.dont take it past 85mph very often as it shakes to death(very scary). Bad points are not much low end power, forks a bit spongey 30 year old tech.

I bought a 1984 Yamaha rd125 lc, I had a tzr 125 before this bike and I will tell you, the rd despite being older and the predecessor of the tzr it is in every way better, not having a power valve gives it a lot more durability, the only thing I would say is to use fully synth 2 stroke oil, it loves it.

“I had one of these in 1982, THE learner bike to have...”

★★★★★

written by dennis65 on 20/11/2008

I had one of these in 1982, THE learner bike to have in those days! 3 months ago I found a completely renovated white one like new (even had the original exhaust!), took it down the local bike meet and got mobbed! (I wish I had a pound for every "I used to have one of those!" and "don ' t see many of them in that condition anymore!". Parked it next to a Ducati 1098 which was then completely blanked by everyone. Great laugh! From a practical point of view, Yamaha build quality, classic bike insurance and if you look hard enough you can get a good one for less than the price of a nasty Chinese 125. and don ' t forget, look after it and you wont have any depreciation either! 2 strokes forever!

“I got this Yamaha RD 125 LC bike in a box and I spent...”

★★★★★

written by gtwcmt on 07/11/2006

I got this Yamaha RD 125 LC bike in a box and I spent a few weeks getting the parts with the longest bits being the side panels. I had a Pepsi bike. The performance of the non YPVS is pretty good, I beat my mate's YPVS all the way up to 70mph and then he got the upper hand with a few more MPH and pull at the top end.
The bikes are light and well balanced.
The older bikes came unrestricted and were pretty fast(in the day).

I never had an issue starting and never blew a piston but it vibrates right through you, just like most 2T's.
I lost mine, so if anyone sees it, please report in...UTH was the last letters.

“My mate has one of these Yamaha RD 125 LC motorcycles...”

★★★★★

written by a04skelhorns on 04/04/2005

My mate has one of these Yamaha RD 125 LC motorcycles and i'm writing this review on his behalf.

I can't believe how indestructable his bike is he has had 7 Crashes, 6 his fault but only minor, and 1 Serious but not his fault (He was published in fast bikes for that one!)
The serious crash was where a ford escort clipped the back end of my mates bike while he was doing 60. Both my mate and his bike walked away vertually untouched!
Buy one of these bikes they arn't the best looking but unbelieveably reliable!!!

Mal123456's Response to a04skelhorns's Review

Written on: 10/02/2007

I once owned a Yamaha RD 125 LC, but mine was the powervalve model (RDZ). It was way back in 1986. I was the second person in the country (GB) to order one, and the first to get on one.

After several mods (usual stuff like micron exhaust, boison race reeds and several sprockets later) I opted for a full works race engine which was acquired through my local main dealer direct from Yamaha racing. It resulted in being classed as the fastest road going 125 in the country, being able to keep up alongside 350LC's no problem, and be able to lift the front wheel at 60 mph with ease. The only problem i had was getting it to stop (ha ha), which I fixed by getting a twin disc conversion fitted and disc on the back. I have just recently bought another one of these superb little fun to ride pocket rockets, with a view to doing something even crazier now my riding and mechanical skills have grown over the years, so please watch this space for fun to come.
