“Very expensive piece of Junk”

written by on 19/08/2013

I bought my TomTom about 2 months ago and have had about 10 Minutes of use from it. The unit just can not find Satellites all the time. If I stand still and hold it in my hand outside of the car its fine...but as soon as I start to move it drops off and go searching for Satellites. The Map goes spinning round like its in a stupor or places me in someone's Paddock. The support site says I have to update it almost daily with a file called GPS Fix (what the ??) what is the use of the product if I have to remove it from the car and connect it to a computer with Internet everyday just to update satellite locations....my Garmin does not need that and it works perfectly every time. I have wasted AU$260.00 and will not recommend or buy another TomTom.

I have had two tom tom 510 units one supplied from work which was used 5 days a week for the past 4 years and over, yes now and again it played up hard to start or needed resetting, but i found it easy to use and thats why i bought my own. the main problem i found was trouble later on with the works one with the connections between it and the mount, some times not connecting properly so charging was a problem and also would keep going on and off which was a pest. But as for anything else i find it pretty good to use i like the blue tooth on it very handy and reasonabley good with the directions and the usual hassle of going fastest routes which all gps may have of taking you across untarmaced roads on moors. and im still using my own, But had to say goodbye to the works one to be replaced with a tom tom start which compared to the 510 is a bit of a let down.

I have had nothing but problems with this unit since I bought it.
I signed up to the map update (6 new maps over 18 months) however, every time I try to update a map, it wipes the device and I end up having to contact customer support (which I have to say so far has been the only good thing about the Tomtom) It has happened four times now with the update before last causing the device to shut down completely and requiring me to send it back..
As others have said also, the latest map guarantee is meaningless and never up to date.

Absolute rubbish

Had my Tom Tom for a couple of years, works ok when you get it started, but it seems getting it started is a common problem, if laid to rest for a few weeks, I find I have to use the mains adaptor to charge it before use and I leave it charging fgr at least four hours before I need it, only then will it switch on, and with a lot of luck find a satelite within five minutes

“The product itself is fine but ”

written by on 13/12/2010

The product itself is fine but
a) the traffic software needs updating every week or it just does not work
b) more importantly I never got any help from Tom Tom - their support is non existant
c) any additional features are prohibitivly expensive

So unless you want a basic unit with no additional features and you never try & get any support from Tom tom nor are likely to concider upgrades (like a new map for eaxmple) I would shop elsewhere. Sorry!

“I'll never buy a Tom Tom ever again after my...”

written by on 19/11/2010

I'll never buy a Tom Tom ever again after my experience with them a few years back.

First, their so called GPS kept locking up on me frequently. I would have to wait until I got home to hook the thing up to the computer to reset everything.

Second, their service was abysmal. They never fixed the problem. They just kept feeding me the same, pat, out of the manual answers.

Third, I took a chance and paid for advanced maps software thinking that maybe this would resolve the issue once and for all. Not only did the new software also freeze up frequently, Tom Tom never got it working once properly over the next three weeks of back and forth, almost daily correspondence. When I finally got fed up and asked for a refund (just) on the new software I was told it was past their two week policy of allowing refunds.

I gave them plenty of chances to fix their product and they screwed me over.

Completely unreliable product, one of the worst support experiences ever, and an unethical company to deal with.

I since bought a Mio GPS (in Europe) and a Garmin GPS (in North America).
Both proved to be very reliable products.

Expensive junk - save your money and a load of hassel and find something else more user friendly both the sat nav an the so called support pages.

The amount help and advice on their website is indicative of the number of problems you can expect to get, guarenteed, along with your device. Steer clear of this over priced under performing user-hostile junk!!!

I have been using GPS since the first ones came out in 1992. I own 7 in boats, cars, planes. Recently bought a Tom Tom for Europe-- all I can say is what a piece of junk. There is so much wrong with it and so user UNfriedndly they should just trash it and copy a Garmin. Sometimes takes 5 minutes to find itself- worse than the Gen 1 GPS's in 1993. Screen print is often too small to see when mounted on the windshield- if you zoom in it zooms back out in a few seconds. Data base for Europe sucks but that may not be their fault entirely. Recently sent me to a college instead of a major museum- off by 6 miles. Not intuitive at all and many things standard on even my bottom end Garmine Nuvi I use in US not on Tom Tom.

“I purchased the latest update to the UK maps and...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by paulh2 on 09/08/2010

I purchased the latest update to the UK maps and change to a major artery (M1 junction 8 and the replaced M10 now being the A414, works completed in May 2009) was not noted. TomTom refused to refund the cost hiding behind their terms and conditions. I find the situation appalling and I will make every effort to place as many bad comments on review web sites as I can. The TomTom management can be proud of itself in sticking to the rules, congratulations. TomTom has alienated a customer and one that is prepared to let everyone know why.

It is unfortunate that TomTom has decided to hide behind terms and conditions. This demonstrates the worst possible case of of customer care. I wonder these days what happened to 'the customer is always right'. TomTom has decided to be cowardly and hang on to my few pounds just so that it can stick to its terms and conditions - it seems obvious to me that TomTom must be going bust if it has to hang on to such a small amount. Still, more room for others, I suppose.

The issue however, is far from resolved.

“I bought my first TomTom in Dec 2009 (TomTom IQ)....”

written by TomTom Disappointing on 24/05/2010

I bought my first TomTom in Dec 2009 (TomTom IQ). After a couple of journeys, it stopped working. It wouldnt turn on. I took it back to the shop and got the TOMTOM XL IQ Routes) This was only used twice too and I had exactly the same problem. I took it back and this time got my money back. I then went and purchased The TomTom Go 630. This time I used it once and it packed up. TomTom are denying they have problems, claiming I was the most unfortunate person to experience 3 faults with three separate models of their equipment. You want proof, I have it!

written by on 13/12/2009

My GO510 never connected to the computer. TOMTOM sent a replacement dock which didn't work. After several email communications they asked for it to be sent in for repair and they then kindly replaced it with a 710, but I lost the POIs that were with the original and although the replacement connected and downloaded from my PC, it can't pick up GPS transmissions! I'm awaiting TOMTOM's response to this. Their support team are friendly and helpful, but there do seem to be problems with reliability.

Bought this for a recent trip to the UK. As I do not live in the US with normal internet connectivity, I planned to update to a UK map upon arrival in the UK. However, this travel device could NOT be updated unless my credit card was used FROM the US!! I've lived overseas for years and used my credit card from around the world - but COULDN'T buy a MAP for a SatNav? No solutions from them - I even had asked before I left if I could purchase a CD Rom, but received NO response. SO - I carried a $200 ROCK around the UK for 3 weeks. How disappointing - wished I'd have known ahead of time - regret buying it and they won't refund me the purchase price. Do NOT buy a Tom Tom if you plan to TRAVEL!

Charge the tom tom go all night and next day it is still erratic.I do feel that with more forethought I should have bought another make of sat.nav.
I did like the large screen, and perhaps that was a relevant factor in my purchase.

“TOMTOM GO 510”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Paul H on 30/04/2009

TOMTOM GO 510
Was always unreliable from new. Kept locking up. Poor battery life. When turning on it would take a long time to pick up the satellites - up to half an hour - I could find my destination before the tomtom even started. Sometimes the voice directions did not match the screen images (images correct, voice not).

At just over a year old the freezing up became even more common, reset stopped working and it does not even turn on now.

Only bought this Tom Tom Go 510 2 years ago. Software difficult to use. Lack of memory on the card supplied. Battery life poor. Now can't get it to switch on or re-boot. Total waste of £200. DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE OR THE successor to it. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
