“Almost 'comedy bad'. Think - Faulty Towers restaurant...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 08/05/2015

I had my 35th birthday meal here (a Saturday evening), based on a previous visit a month or so earlier, where the food was tasty and the young Italian waitress was extremely polite, friendly and helpful. However, on my birthday, it was a completely different story. They must have a different chef at the weekend, because our food, this time, was bland, luke warm and only contained 15% of the meat content that a standard meal usually has?? Also, the wine (although expensive) tasted cheap, like cooking wine! We had to wait an HOUR for our food and several surrounding tables were presented with the wrong meals, that no-one had ordered. Finally, the young Italian waitress that had made us feel so welcome weeks earlier, unfortunately didn't get assigned to our table and instead we received appalling service from a very grumpy older English woman, who seemed to run the place. The grumpy waitress/manager(?) was rude, head-mistress'y, short-tempered and completely humiliated the nice Italian waitress more than once, by 'telling her off' in front of customers!?! The whole experience was very uncomfortable and shocking. Such a shame, as the previous owners of Umberto's were very professional, friendly and the food used to be excellent.

“Good food but service was slow”

★★★☆☆

written by on 05/07/2012

The high expectations we expected from this restaurant was sadly not met, whilst the food was very good, and as the menu states '' the chef is an artist'' the service was very slow and the was little to no ambiance. The decor was homely however the glass tables made you feel on edge, and the fine dining cutlery was not necessary. The waitress was pleasent however it was quite enfuriating having to wait a long time for the bill whilst she had a conversation in Italian with some other patrons. All in all I would only recommend going back at a time where there is no one else in the restaurant otherwise you will have to wait a long time.

“Service lets it down”

★★★☆☆

written by on 10/06/2012

We found Umberto's, which I would still call a "gem", about three months ago. We only visit at lunchtime when the reataurant is quieter, so the still considerable wait for our usually quite delicious food is tolerable - just. I have often wondered how they cope in the busy evenings as Umberto is only assisted then by one other chef in a tiny kitchen as I understand it. The house wine is pretty dire and the wine list seems to us very pricey for a small restaurant - so we limit ourselves to one glass of the house wine each rather than splashing out on a bottle of Frascati for example, which we would prefer. Rather a short sighted policy methinks. Service is slapdash and not very effectively carried out. I suspect, however, that the speed of the waitress is governed by the (slow) speed of the kitchen and deliberately so I suspect. One can understand that a wait for freshly cooked, good quality food is necessary but this makes the service side of things even more important. Indeed it could offer the canny proprietor opportunities to increase his sales pattern during the wait, if inteligently managed - rather than wasting valuable time arguing about tap water or summat!. The customer does not appear to be King here and i suspect that this stems, for some reason, from the top. A great pity because the standard of cooking is, in our experience, authentic and very tasty.

“Simply THE Best”

★★★★★

written by on 19/05/2012

I cannot understand the previous comments left, the food and service are excellent, the prices very competitive. Where else can you get food cooked to order, chop and change different pasta with different sauces all cooked to perfection. I am NEVER dissapointed and can taste the food even before I eat it, and as for the tap water this is simply not true, Umberto's served tap water to us when asked, but anyone that has ever been to Italy knows that the Italians always have a bottle of water on the table. And lastly IT IS AUTHENTIC ITALIAN!!!! nor pre-packed, pre-prepared and run by a 100% Italian not an Albanian, Turk or any other outsider claiming to be Italian. Oh and it's not a chain....

“Great”

★★★★★

written by on 17/02/2012

We eat here pretty much every weekend - sometimes even twice a weekend, and have been doing so for well over a year. Neither we nor any of our friends have ever been disappointed with the service or the food, and always come away full and satisfied. I usually have a pasta dish and/or a pizza and both are always beautiful. My only small suggestion would be to soften the atmosphere slightly - a few more candles etc. Otherwise, a great restaurant, great food. Hopefully like this forever!

“don't ruin your evening, choose a different restaurant!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 27/11/2011

My partner is Italian and we often choose to eat out in Italian restaurants so he can feel more at home. One night we decided to try Umberto's as the menu looked quite promising. We were greeted by a rather unpleasant smell of some sort of a disinfectant but we chose to ignore it - perhaps we shouldn't have. Or perhaps they should have used more of it in the toilets which were rather smelly. The food turned out to be pretty average (not the promised "slice of Italy") and the portions were really small but when we wanted to order another dish, we were told that we would have to wait for at least half an hour longer cause the kitchen was too busy. All in all, the food and the service are definitely not worth the price (£13 for a dozen small calamari rings and a couple of prawns?) so we definitely won't go back there again, even if all the other Italian restaurants in the neighbourhood are fully booked.

written by on 13/03/2011

We have just had an evening at Umbertos Norwich and were totally disappointed. We ordered starters of Garlic bread with cheese and there was no sign of any cheese. We queried this and were told there was a sprinkling of parmesan cheese on the bread, sorry but I hate parmesan cheese and can smeel it a mile away - there was no cheese on the garlic bread. Main courses. to be fair the lasagne was good but very small portions for the price. 1 member of the party had spagetti tubes with no sauce and very little bacon/ham and a few small pieces of tomato - very disappointing.
Totally disappointed with the food and the service. Will certainly not be going back any time soon. We were celebrating a 65th birthday but there was certainly nothing to make this a memorable evening.

This review is rather confusing. As a food lover i make sure that when i order food i see what the ingredients are, if you don't like parmesan then why not say, this to me is personal choice rather than bad food. I also don't understand why the British say they like Italian food when they don't understand it. Not all pasta needs to drowned in sauce, read the ingredients and you will see what the pasta is made with. I have lived several years in Italy and have come across all types of recipes, not all pasta is the same. Even Carluccio will agree with this comment.
I go regularly to Umberto's and LOVE IT. It's fresh food, made to order and i'd rather go there than some chain restaurant where the food is made in a factory.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK UMBERTO.

Use are so short of good restaurants in Norfolk. I have always believed the public get the restaurents they deserve. You will have to wait at Umbertos as you meal will be freshly cooked, delicious and very genuinely Italian (not just Italian style),. Unfortunately most reviews in the Norfolk area say more about the reviewer than the restaurant! Most Norfolk people want a plate of rubbish piled high, for as little as possible and in 5 minutes flat. So that's what they get most of the time.

On special occasions and when we fancy good quality Italian food my only choice in Norwich is Umberto's.
Good quality food is hard to come by in Norwich as most of the locals seem to judge a good restaurant by the quantity and not the quality of their meal.
For the discerning lover of good food this restaurant is my first choice.
Umberto regularly travels to Italy and returns with delicacies not available in this country also, he prepares the ingredients personally and sun-dry's he's own tomatoes!
The table wine is of a higher quality than most found in restaurants and the lack of tap water is not an issue for me.
I cannot understand the previous reviews maybe they were looking for the 'stack it high' service.
My wife and I always pay regular visits during the crab and mussel season as Umberto prepares these local delicacies to perfection.
We have always been treated very well the staff I find friendly and have never had any cause for complaint.

I usually love Italian food but Umbertos was totally disappointing, the starter tasted weird and the main course was bland. The service was really bad and one of the waitresses was really rude and unhelpful, it certainly wasn't service with a smile. I wasn't impressed and won't be going again.

8 of had a meal on Saturday 27th March. The table was pre-booked. We didnt order any starters yet had to wait for more than an hour for the mains. There was no communication let alone an apology from staff. When we asked why it was taking so long, we were told that we had all ordered pizzas (it is an Italian!!) and there was only one pizza oven?? We asked for a round of drinks on the house; the waitress at first didnt understand our request, she then said she would speak to the manager; we didnt hear anything else from her. They then had the cheek to put 10% 'service' charge on the bill. I am all for supporting local businesses but they have now lost atleast 8 customers. Please do not go there.

The food is excellent,Umberto is a tad moody, but the main objection is the refusal to serve tap water. This has been reported several times, but clearly has no effect.
In these days, when we are being encouraged not to drink bottled water, Umberto needs to drag himself into the 21st century, and consider environmental issues. Also, if someone is paying an average of £20 per head, it is rather insulting to refuse tap water, especially since most people would refuse a bottle anyway, on principal.

Terrible service, waitress wouldnt serve water in a jug claiming they only sell bottled water, when questioned she explained that when you own the restaurant you can do what you want! Our table was booked but not ready when we arrived. Food was good but evening spoilt by a lack of understanding of what a customer is. Half expected Basil Fawlty to jump out and hit one of the waiters, they could have benefited from a good beating!

As visitors to Norwich \i tried Umbertos as I wanted to eat Italien. We booked a table for 9:15 and arrived on time but table was not ready. When ordering we requested wine and a jug of water only to be told no tap water available! Only bottled water. The waitress explained that when you own the restaurant you can do what you want. I think she may have been the owners wife. Most likely needs a good seeing to. We were also asked why we were eating so late! Generally service was very poor and it put a bit of a downer on the evening. Food was great though. Shame the service and general attitude was so bad. I wont be going back and will recommend Pinocchios which I'm told is much better and they recognise that a customer is there to be served rather than to be made to feel like the restaurant is doing them a favour.

written by on 24/11/2009

Would we recommend this restaurant to a friend? Emphatically no, for one simple reason, that they do not serve tap water. When we asked why, we were told that 'the water in Norfolk is very bad,you know, full of limescale and we wouldn't want to poison anyone'! A ridiculous excuse and our request was ungraciously handled. They need to realise that times have changed and that the customer is sometimes right!

It was our first time at umbertos and it will be our last.
The waitress was brusk and curt, when i asked for a jug of tap water she said they only provide bottled water. The wine we had was thin and tasteless and she also seated us in the window with a board across it so couldnt see out and it felt very hemmed in.
Overall a pretty negative experience which i feel could have been prevented with a cuteous waitress and better seating arrangements.

written by on 12/10/2009

I went here for a 65th birthday meal on a Saturday night.

Service: OK and attentive, although don't recall coming over and asking if everything was ok. Also, if we wanted any pepper which for an Italian is very strange.

Presentation: The resertaunt could do with a facelift, saying it has a retro feel would be diplomatic.

Food: I enjoyed the food but thought it pretty average in comparisons to many other italian resteraunts given the cost (Which still though isn't excessive).

Drink: Wine is disappointing. £18 for the cheapest bottle, otherwise you have to by a jug of unitentied house. One thing which is massivly dissapointing is the fact that its their policy not to provide a just of tap water if requested!! Even though we were have 3 courses and coffee, plus wine. This is even printed on the menu. Something so small really mare's the evening and got peoples backs up amd leaves the waiting staff in a sticky position. Just to get a few extra pounds

Over all (Other than the drink) not a bad experience but not somewhere I would go again given the wealth of other choices. I am all for giving my money to local run resteraunts but given the choice, I would rather go to pizza express/strada than here again.

The good quality food did not make up for the appalling service.
We booked a table for 7.30 pm and were served the main course at around 9pm. A simple request for a jug of iced water was refused by a grumpy old waiter who had all sorts of ridiculous excuses for the slowness of service.
There maybe some favoured customers who get treated well but this is no way to run a restaurant.
Fortunately there is no shortage of good quality Italian food available in Norwich so there will be no need to visit Umberto's again.

Friendly service, cosy resteraunt with excellent food. Have been dining here on special occasions for nearly 10 years and have NEVER had anything to complain about. Always happy to book here as we know that the food is real italian food with no added flavours, what you order is what you get. Mr umberto knows our faces and will always welcome us in a friendly manner when we arrive and bid us goodnight when leaving, I can not understand the negative comments left on here, those people must not know the true quality they are receiving when they visit umbertos.

I've been going to Umberto's for 12 years, its like a little Italian oasis in the middle of Norwich. the restaurant makes you feel like you are sitting in a restaurant in Italy. The food is even better cooked by Umberto himself! You will find it criminal to pay for food anywhere else after tasting this food. 10 out of 10 and easily Norwich's best food.

You haven't tasted Italian food until you've been here.
