“Deceived with charges for Flat Tyre”

★☆☆☆☆

written by WSenior on 10/06/2023

The rental car from Nimes had a flat tyre ( while parked overnight). Europcar sent a tow truck which pumped up the tyre and left us to get it checked and fixed. The Garage were unable to do this for 4 days. We did not want to use the car for safety concerns before the tyre was checked. We had to ask Europcar to replace the car and swapped the car at another location which they did but only a smaller model was available. After the rental we have been invoiced twice for Damages Surcharge and Damage Admin. The extra charges were not presented when we dropped the car off. The two invoices have total extra charges over 44o euros. One is a duplicate and in any case the charges are excessive. We have raised a comlaint and claim but have yet to have the duplicate invoice reimbursed, nor a compensation for the very poor service.

After I raised a complaint with Europcar, they have replied that there were new damages (than the original flat tyre).

They did not send any evidence for the damages. There was no damage when we returned either the original car or its replacement. Their invoice for these was charged to my account six days after returning the car. If there was damage there is no proof we did it.

“Fabricated/false damage - perjury by employees”

★☆☆☆☆

written by America209 on 01/01/2023

Beware of this business. Bergen Norway Upon return of my rental car to an unattended parking lot and service desk, I was notified of damage under the front cowling of the car. Three scrapes. I never caused this damage and was told of it, via email, as I was boarding my flight to Paris. I disputed the damage. EuropCar claims I either should have seen the damage before taking the car out or I caused the damage. I know I didn’t cause the damage and I order to have seen it I would have had to get on my hands and knees to look under the front of the car. EuropCar also claims that I signed the paperwork admitting to the damage. They are unable and/or unwilling to answer how, if I was boarding the plane when notified of their damage allegation, I was able to sign paperwork in front of a EuropCar employee. EuropCar has simply added the damage allegations to paperwork I had previously signed. Eurocar has falsified paperwork and perjured themselves. I suspect this is a tactic used against foreigners with third party insurance. Do not use these people. I’ll continue to fight these charges and expose their corrupt business

“Contract not honored”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jacksonem273 on 08/08/2022

We recently returned from a trip in the UK. We booked a car through economycarrentals.com for a car with Europcar.. When we arrived at Europcar at Heathrow they said they did not have the type of car booked, an economy class vehicle (VW polo or equivalent). They were not apologetic but did pass me off to the manager that said that we could either we pay an additional 14 pounds/day for an upgrade (Ford Focus) or get no car. Of course we took the car, what could we do? The car was delivered with crumbs on the floor and only 1/4 tank of fuel. They said they could fill it but it would be a 45 minute wait. We resolved that I could return it with 1/4 tank instead a full tank. I've tried contacting Europcar after the fact and they have no sympathy for my case basically stating that I agreed to the upgrade so that's that.

“DISHONEST AND UNPROFESSIONAL”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Konner372 on 25/06/2022

I rented a car for 2 weeks at Faro Airport and I was charged 104 euros without my consent for roadside assistance. The employee, a man failed to inform me of this. When I complained, the management said that it was my fault for signing the contract. When you arrive at an airport you are tired, you want to get to your destination so you trust the company. Never again, Faro Airport Europcar.

“An amazing rent a car experience!!!”

★★★★★

written by emistri on 26/02/2022

This was an amazing rent a car experience. We have been waited with a brand new van in the airport, taken to the car park, given a brand new car that was actually an upgrade to what we have booked and Natasa has made everything so easy and seamless! Couldn’t feel more welcome arriving in Greece to enjoy this beautiful country! Highly recommended!

The person I dealt with at Manchester airport could not have been more helpful we hired after flying on the 5th January & required to pick up our own car at Glasgow airport. she made sure we were happy with the car before leaving us and gave us directions to get onto the motorway and on our way. Everything was stress free, many thanks, will be using you again

“OR Tambo Branch ... it won't be pleasant throughout!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by TheMomentHumansBlink on 08/11/2020

This review pertains to the OR Tambo Branch, however, this may be a widespread problem. I realised I was charged more than what's expected when I received my credit card statement. I requested an invoice to check the extra charges, only to find out I was charged an extra day. I submitted my documents to customer services via Twitter showing I collected the car 2 minutes after the pick-up time. I was expecting a speedy resolution, however, my case was passed on to the South African branch. I hired the car in March, we are now in November ... and you guessed right, it's not yet settled and I am waiting for a conclusion and of course, a refund. Now let me make you aware of the rest of my unbiased experience ... The customer-facing staff who dealt with me was nice, no issues at all. The other chap next to me was just too polite to challenge the staff who was just openly rude to them. 3 words to describe the member of staff - condescending, rude, abrupt. The welcoming skills, interaction and body language were just "off". Let's go to the handover of the hired car - staff was smartly dressed, helpful (overly) with our luggage, then he sat on the driver's seat, stating all the obvious as if it's your first time driving a car, then after about 20 mins (you will feel uncomfortable during this time because of the unnecessary chit chat and your itinerary), he will then extort money from you. I will not use the word "tip" because with the way he behaved at that very moment, it was extortion. He wouldn't move away from the driver seat until we ended giving him foreign currency despite explaining that we do not have any local currency yet. It was an unnerving experience. Don't make excuses that you have not withdrawn any local currency because you are in a rush to get on your way, it WILL NOT WORK. I reported this to Europcar South Africa customer services when we arrived back in the UK. We received confirmation that this was forwarded to OR Tambo branch manager and that was the end of it. Based on my experience, EUROPCAR, a well-known worldwide company terribly failed in addressing my concerns promptly despite clear pieces of evidence presented to them, therefore, I strongly recommend that you steer clear of EUROPCAR and find another car hire provider regardless of location as this doesn't seem to make any difference. EUROPCAR is now blacklisted in my books, which is a first ... and in the books of my friends, relatives, work colleagues and their friends, relatives and work colleagues ... and so on and so forth. One insignificant customer is not a big loss, you may say.

“TWO YEARS for payment collection”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Hanley1975 on 17/08/2020

Europcar took TWO YEARS to notify me of a missed payment when returning a vehicle to one of their rental depots in Amsterdam. It was rented and dropped off in good faith that my card details were on file and Europcar would deduct the amount. It's not the customers responsibility to ensure payment is taken correctly, the onus is on the organisation to ensure payments are processed correctly. Utterly ridiculous that it took this long. When they finally decided to get in contact, it was over email, with spelling and grammar errors, which was assumed to be a phishing email. Will not deal with Europcar again the future nor recommend their service to others.

“Untrustworthy”

★☆☆☆☆

written by SteveandChris on 21/01/2020

Cars are ok but pushy staff destroy any trust. They go out of their way to try and sell overpriced insurance, try to make out they haven't got a car in the group required and try to force upgrades on you (not free ones!) Try to make out there is damage to the car in a dark dank garage ( they tried to make me agree a chipped windscreen, until I rubbed off the bit of dirt I saw them adding!) Unfortunately this is a problem with most major Spanish car rental firms, anything to extort money from you by underhand means. I have used a few off airport privateers and so far they have been great. Be very careful or go elsewhere.

“charged for pre existing car damage”

★☆☆☆☆

written by wdSalisbury235 on 15/12/2019

This past summer I rented a car from Europcar. When i picked up the car at Rome airport i noticed a scratch on the hood that I indicated to the attendant. He marked the car diagram where the damage was and initialed. Three months after I got back to the US my credit card is charged roughly $250 by Europcar. When I contacted them to find out why they produced a a letter that they claimed they sent me with two pictures of a tiny scratch on the bumper but an invoice of repair done to the hood. When I challenged the charge they wouldn’t explain why they charged for the hood and sent me pictures of the bumper. They wouldn’t refund the charge. Don’t rent a car from this company. Once they take your credit card they charge whatever they want. I have never been treated so unjustly. They are really BAD

“You should never rented a car from Europcar!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Paulesg on 26/11/2019

The worst renting experience of my life My best advice: you should never rented a car from this company! When I brought the car back there was no damage. Nobody looked to my car and I left. Then, I received an email after the car has been moved and they send me a picture of a scratch that I am NOT responsible of. The insurance with extra coverage didn't want to pay for it because I already give back the car. I lost 600$ CAN because of them! The service was awful. They interrupted me when I was talking, they told me they will end the conversation without listening to me. They were stuberned to not help me. In conclusion, they were rude, impolite and they stoled me 600$ ! Last advice: take a lot of pictures before and after giving back the car.

“Useless”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Charlotte_NC on 29/10/2019

We booked on internet a car at Auckland international airport with an infant capsule. Waited for half an hour in the car Park to get the seat. It appears it was not suitable for a 3 months old baby. They told us to go and buy one, or to cancel the rent or even use it with our responsability ! A real joke !! If we'd known we would have brougth ours. I complained at the desk. The people at the desk were useless, didn't help at all, were unpleasant, even call the police airport security because I was not happy at all (I told them to go and buy the capsule themselves has the reservation made on internet said they had one). The woman told us to wait that she would call her manager to explain but she called the police ! Europcar car should replace the people at the desk by machines as they are useless... At least we could not get angry...

“Nice not nice!”

written by haO'Neal354 on 30/09/2019

Hired from Europcar Nice Airport. Beware of hiring from this company- they will try to add super LDW (excess insurance) to your contract even if you specifically decline this- this doubled the cost of our car hire. Agents take advantage of stressful situation to appear helpful but all they want is as much money as possible for Europcar and zero customer satisfaction. Will never hire from again. Avoid, not worth one star.

“My father booked his car with Europcar to be collected...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by NickiColeman on 17/05/2019

My father booked his car with Europcar to be collected from Faro Airport. He visits every year for approx. 8 weeks. He always pre pays takes out the additional insurance. This year "A very pleasant young man" asked him if he would like an upgrade as there was a promotion. My father said yes as no charge was mentioned. He returned the upgraded car to Faro Airport on the 7th April. When he received his credit card statement he was surprised to see that Europcar had charged him £852 on the day he returned the car. There was no explanation as to why the charge had been made. It took several attempts to find out why the money had been charged. Many attempts have been made to appeal to them, however as one would expect they see they have done nothing wrong. There is a "pleasant young man" at Faro Airport that has enjoyed his commission from a older gentleman. Congratulations Europcar you are MAGNIFICENT. Buyer beware use any other car hire company DO NOT USE EUROPCAR>

The exact same thing just happened to us in Geneva. We prepaid for our car when we booked. Upon arriving at the airport to pick it up, the salesperson said we would need something bigger and said he could give us a larger car at half the usual cost. We were lead to believe this new car would replace the previous one we had booked and we signed the contract. When we returned back home we were charged for both!! What a shock! Eurpocar will not refund us the original amount we paid for the other car we booked. This is a very sleezy company who preys on weary travellers and is only interested in increasing their bonuses. Disgusting business practice!

I think they are the most corrupt organisation I have ever come across. My father should have been going back to Portugal next month, however because of the experience of last year he has lost all confidence to travel on his own. So I would like to thank them again for destroying all confidence for my father and robbing him of over £800 what a way to treat a pensioner. Absolutely disgraceful

“Waited 3 hours at Faro Airport for a pre booked rental...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 13/05/2019

We booked car for pick up at 3.00pm and waited in a queue at Faro Airport for over 2.5 hours and we were the 45th booking in the queue waiting to be seen - despite using the faster booker service. I have never in 40 years of travelling waited as long as this for a pre booked and prepaid hire car. Outrageous. When we complained to the customer services by email and then by telephone - because no one would help us at the desk in Faro Airport - they agreed to move our booking to Montenegro which is a 4 min car drive away. We eventually got our hire car 3.5 hours after we had booked it. There was no queue at Montenegro whatsoever with 3 people waiting to serve customers -easily and helpfully. I expect to receive compensation - having paid for a car that I was unable to get for 3.5 hours after our pre booked time. Outrageous and I would never used Europcar again

“NIGHTMARE if you return car with a small scratch on car...”

written by Desertwolf on 13/05/2019

Returning a car with EUROCAR in JOBURG is always an unpleasant affair. they always try to get more money out of you, either they find an obscure scratch or the car is too dirty and they want to charge me extra etc etc etc... it is abusive . EUROPCAR Johannesburg Airport Administration staff are the worse I ever had to deal with...I return the car with a small scratch on the wheel hub cap... weeks later they sent me an invoice for 350$ for the repairs... ????!!!! I told them it is way too much for what it is and to claim the insurance I paid for.. they said no I have to pay for some obscure reasons and I have to claim to my insurance... I tried to ask questions and got no response from their finance and customer service rude and useless staff other then pay... I told them to charge my credit card and leave me alone... I got an email from a collection agency this morning demanding I pay plus collection fees and interests now its 400$...2 years later... yes this happened in 2017.. for two years their Admin Staff at Europcar finance in Johannesburg could not find the time to call me or answer my questions or phone me to settle the issue. they sent the case for collection without any chance for me to settle the invoice I was convinced had been taken care of 24 months ago.. Their staff are rude and have absolutely no empathy or care for their customer. Shame on EUROPCAR for training their staff that way.. You collect the 350$ in the end but your are loosing a lot more on the long run trust me...

Avoid them. I rent a car with a dealer with them. I came to Paphos, the staff is so rude in there, they asked 1800 euro deposit, I asked why?? They told me. 900 excess and 900 if someone is stealing the car. I called the police because in my policy was written 900 euro. The girl from there, was so rude, she told me to go aways, I told them I will call the television also i spent a night with a baby in the airport to sleep. Because I called the police, the owner deiced not to rent me the car, he was so rude. I asked them written letter with the reason of refusal and he hang up the phone. They have camera there and I want to see in the Court if I been abusive as they said just because I called the police. This company for what did to me will pay in the Court

written by PalmOasis on 15/03/2019

Picked up car from Las Palmas Airport, received terrible service from the start. waited ages to be served probably because they were trying to get the people in front to upgrade. Received paperwork and key and told the sign for the damage before even seeing the car! Picked it up from designated bay no representative from Europcar to meet us (we were told there would be) Couldn't see much of the body work as the underground car park was dimly light. Arrived at the hotel noticed lots of scratches all over the car and assumed they were the ones I had signed for before seeing it. I also noticed the back seat was not very clean and there were children's footprint marks on the back of the passenger seat, but I was not that bothered as it was only myself and wife using the vehicle, also noticed the aerial was missing. Took the car back a week later to the same airport to be greeted by a representative (funny how there wasn't one when picking up) who proceeded to produce a torch and started showing me the scratches that were already there when I picked the car up. I was then told to go to the Europcar office were I waited nearly an hour to be seen, the representative told me there was a charge of 870.00 Euros for the damage, plus there was another charge for cleaning the car and for the tank not being full which was absolute rubbish! I refused to sign for any of these charges and left for my flight. Within 2 days of arriving home I noticed a charge on my credit card for 60.99 Euros within no explanation as to what it was for. I have since sent a formal complaint to the Europcar office in Madrid, but so far have only had an automatic acknowledgement for the email. I have now instructed my credit card company not to make any further payments to the company until this dispute is resolved. My advise is DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE EUROPCAR !!

I am wondering when I will receive refund of £250 taken from my credit card? Today is 15th working day since I've returned the car at Heathrow branch and since the amount was apparently refunded. I’ve called customer service 3 times, have emailed them but no luck! And I was told that the money from credit card will only be pre authorised not debited, however the money was taken. Now I am just wondering when I will receive it back as I will have to pay interest as well. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Thanks for answering this question.

Hi Kurir, I had a similar but not identical experience with Europcar. I booked the car through a company called 121 Car Hire (never again!). I was charged by them for the hire when I made the booking and I was charged again when I returned the car. Collecting and returning the car from/to Europcar was such a nightmware and so chaotic we almost missed our flight home so I didn't realise they'd charged me again until I got home. I spent months trying to contact both 121 Car Hire and Europcar but with no success. In the end I contacted my credit card company and that was also a nightmare - at one point I was told that this is quite a frequent occurrence with overseas car rental companies! Finally, I wrote a letter to the Chairman of the credit card company and he arranged for the over-charged amount to be refunded. I suggest you get on to your credit card company straight away. Good luck!

Hi the problem was with europcar Cyprus and 3 dud cars, to resolve the issue I finally contacted their head office , as a result I received a partial refund . If they took the £250. Maybe there was some damage already on the car that you did not spot or if they said they refunded money did you check that the account or card details the money went into was yours it could have gone into someone else's account . I hope this helps

Where is your money? It is with Europcar. Unfortunately they are one of the worst car hire companies. If you read small print, they have many unusual clauses (for example high additional charges for topping up returned car petrol tank in addition to just charging for petrol, etc, etc). One of the tricks is to keep your deposit money, or any due refunds for a long time before returning it. Do not worry, you will eventually get your money back. I used many car hire companies before, and this is the one to avoid at all cost!

I had a really bad experience with them a couple of years ago when I hired a car in Portugal. I paid the rental charge when I booked the car through 121 car hire in the UK and Europcar charged the basic rental to my card again when I returned it. I made numerous attempts to contact both 121 Car Hire and Europcar by telephone, email and post and that got me nowhere. I'd paid by credit card so reported them to my credit card company and eventually, after writing to the Chairman, the credit card company refunded my money. I do wish you luck with this. I shall never use 121 car hire or Europcar again.

Yes it's true the worst of the lot however Avis came a close 2nd recently, we paid the additional insurance and they took a bond as well if I had of known I would have given them a credit card we never used the also charged us in aud instead of Euros so it was an expensive hire, I thought they are not allowed to have access to debit cards, our deposit was refunded in 3 business days I guess this is how they make a lot of extra money
