“Do not hire a car with Europcar!”

I was charged for "roadside assistance" when I didn't ask for it and was not informed by staff of this charge. It is in the small print - when you collect the car and sign a document this charge is there, but, when I originally booked the car hire over the phone the adviser told me this was the "total cost" of hiring the car. I am from Australia and booked and paid for a luxury car for 17 days hire at Belfast International Airport. The Mercedes I booked was not available and a Jeep was substituted. I reluctantly accepted the car, unseen of course and expected a new and very flash 4 wheel drive Jeep. In the carpark the Jeep somehow turned into a Hyundai front wheel drive manual, with genuine fake leather. I was ussured everything would be addressed by the helpful staff. I booked the car hire online through Expedia and was quoted $330 CAD for the duration and approximately $180 for insurance although they couldn't book the insurance. I thought great & booked it. When we arrived at London Heathrow & started processing the booking, the Europcar staff was saying the rate (including insurance which was of course compulsory) was nearly 700 GBP. have just returned from holiday in Mallorca where I used Europcar for 7 days. I remembered the 2-2.5 Hour journey to our hotel in Paguera, so I did not want a coach transfer for a 30 min car journey., nor did I want to pay for a taxi both ways. “Appalling Customer Relations and Lousy After Sales Exp”

Firstly, it took Europcar more than a month to give me a response on my authorisation charge inquiry, despite me calling and emailing on 3 separate occasions. I had to chase Europcar for an answer. Secondly, Europcar's process of placing an authorisation charge on customers' credit card is ridiculous. “Impossible to contact”

I had a problem with goods left in my car at Europcar Santander Airport. I am trying to arrange collection but the phone line is either engaged or rings with no answer. My courier company requires an e-mail address but it is impossible to find one for their branch in the airport. Their customer service dept in Spain does not speak English. “Dishonest and terrible customer service”

After waiting for over 20 minutes at the LHR branch of Europcar to even be helped, it then took over 2 hours to get a vehicle. We had reserved via Hotwire an estate wagon that was advertised as carrying 5 people and 5 large suitcases. The first vehicle they gave us couldn't even fit 2 suitcases. I hired a car from their Glasgow airport office. Despite telling them that no additional cover was required they added on nearly £20 to a one day hire for extra cover. Then they refused a refund. Europcar said my first rental was one minute late and there were damages, the second that the car was not fueled and had damages. Showed after a hassle incorrect on all points. Then received tickets 4 months after leaving Italy for unspecified violations with another couple hundred dollars in damages. Cars not fueled, not ready, dirty combined with no way to contact Europcar via their non working email and I say go elsewhere. PS - car ran fine with no problems there!… Read Full Review

I flew into Marseille from Bristol expecting to pick up the car and be on the road within 30/45 minutes which is my usual experience with other hire companies. Not so with Europcar Marseille I joined a long queue of other passengers as a Gatwick flight had also come in and we patiently queued at a desk where there was one staff member. we declined the extra insurance cover and that was probably a mistake. Without it you are like a lamb to the slaughter when you return the vehicle. they found a microscopic scratch we hadn't noticed - they knew where to look - and slapped a fixed £170 charge. They had our credit card details so didn't care about our protests. We wrote copious letters to their complaints dept. - a waste of time. We have pre-paid G2 IMAR Renault Scenic or similar car through your partner in Moscow Karlson Tourism . Apon arrival to Nice a lady in your Nice office told us she has only a big family Renault that will not fit us. And told us we should take BMW X4 20 D for which she is going to charge us 100€ extra fee for the whole rental period (7days). This amount (100€) was charged from my bank card on 12.08.2015. Totally incompetent! They may be cheaper than others but not worth the aggravation. They don't know what they are doing. Our group booked 2 cars at the airport in Genoa, Italy, and we were told they were open till 11PM but actually they closed at 6PM. They reopened the place because they had actually told several other people the same thing and then charged all of us an after hours charge for their mistake. I feel ripped off by Europcar and will certainly be not recommending them! Upon returning the vehicle, the Europcar attendant noticed that the fuel gauge did not register completely full (top bar failing to illuminate - we'd selected the Full to Full option)); I explained that we'd also noticed this and tried on two occasions to refuel within 6k of the airport to resolve this problem (even getting a pump-attendant to refuel to ensure it was completely full). Picked up rental car from Glasgow airport, paid $400 dollars rental for 4 weeks, customer service asked me to return the car before 8am 4 weeks later.
