“Slow and unprofessional”

Written on: 17/04/2014 by 25Greenwood (1 review written)

We are first time buyers with halifax and found our perfect property 7 weeks ago. We had a mortgage in principle with halifax and were keen to have our mortgage with halifax as they had the stamp duty deal. Unfortunately right from the word go they have been slow, hard to contact and generally unprofessional in my opinion. They lost our pay slips and personal details when they requested them and it took me two weeks to find out what they had done. Upon taking in more pay slips they then said… Read Full Review

“Just took to long to do anything”

Written on: 10/04/2014 by Welshpx207 (1 review written)

Positives: Good customer service Stamp duty offer Negatives: Long call waits to speak with someone (up to 30 minutes regularly) Income reference was a nightmare. My work did not help by refusing a some of the detail Halifax wanted. Then required proof of deposit sending to them. The best bit is my savings are with Halifax! Faxes were not always received and had to be sent multiple times. Can't send documents on email. I am pretty certain most lenders are similar so overall I can't be too… Read Full Review

“OMG PC says no.”

Written on: 31/03/2014 by d4ny18 (1 review written)

These are so frustrating i thought you needed a qualification to be a mortgage accessor. We are stuck in a buytolet mortgage (fix rate) finished last October we now live in the property so trying to get a residential mortgage, my wife has run a limited company for the last few years, I work full time, all end of year accounts upto date, she has only filed 1 tax return which was last year as the inland revenue only requested this, so we have a SA302 form for that year but these clowns are… Read Full Review

“Fantastic service by Halifax where all else failed.”

Written on: 14/01/2014 by Disappointed22 (1 review written)

Just received our mortgage offer from Halifax after a horrific 4 months being declined by NatWest. Got a mortgage in principle from Halifax on the 20th December and as we already had an offer accepted on a house (from our initial stages with NatWest), went ahead and completed the full application with Halifax on the 23rd December. All they needed from my husband and I was proof of ID, 3 months bank statements and 3 months pay slips (even though I own another property on a Buy to Let mortgage -… Read Full Review

“One message by email a week, poor service”

Written on: 05/01/2014

Visited Halifax to see if we would be eligible for a mortgage and after initial checks said we would be fine to go ahead we started looking for a home. When we eventually found the right place and had an offer accepted we went back to the Halifax with what we were told to bring back with us. Everything was great and was told that they had everything for my partner but I needed to bring in bank statements and that would be sufficient with everything else we had brought in. For 3 and a half… Read Full Review

“mortgage granted”

Written on: 18/12/2013 by learnerdriver (2 reviews written)

After a really stressful experience with Woolwich who we bank with, were recommended by the broker to go through Halifax. Due to my partner having overtime, etc. they requested an employer's reference, that's why it got a bit delayed. But got a 90% mortgage granted by Halifax no problem. We did have to provide a letter explaining some late payments in the past, which we did, so it was fine. As long as you go through a broker, are honest with them and have no major credit problems, Halifax are… Read Full Review

Having gone with a mortgage broker through a agency, i was told that we have the mortgaged agreed went there and signed paperwork and even got the details in the post with a roll number! 3 weeks after the mortgage was agreed in principal we get told that they can only lend 79% and not 90% like they agreed because my partner had a default that was settled and is classed as satisfied on his report that they were made aware of! i have since paid solicitor fees and search fees the mortgage even… Read Full Review

“Halifax are useless!!!!”

Written on: 02/11/2013 by MariaBVH (1 review written)

Twice now Halifax have declined our mortgage after it was agreed in principle. I have an excellent credit score, no debts and 20% deposit. My current place I will be changing to a buy to let. I realised afterwards what Halifax would lend me plus my deposit wasn't quite enough to get a fairly decent sized house so my partner and I did a joint application just so we could Borrow that little bit more only 40k. We got AIP and declined after surveyor was booked. Twice this has happened now… Read Full Review

“Absolutely Shocking Lender!!!”

Written on: 29/10/2013 by PrinceJD (1 review written)

I had a mortgage in principle with Halifax agreed and put down deposit on a new build as they were willing to lend at 85% LTV I submitted all paperwork, wage slips, proof of deposit etc and they wanted to review. They declined initially and I appealed which took them 2 weeks to look at. Halifax then accepted the appeal last week (Thursday) based on providing more information which we did immediately we then get a call today to say we have been declined again!! What a joke we had out heart set… Read Full Review

“Absolute Joke of A Company!!”

Written on: 29/10/2013

Applied for a mortgage being self employed. Got the mortgage in principle even got an email congratulating us on the success of the application!! Me and my wife got really excited as we thought being self employed and getting a mortgage would be a nightmare!! Our credit scores are A+. So we paid for the survey, all good at this point. Today received a phone call from my broker who said they had refused the application as the business was set up in 2007 then dissolved & the new company has had… Read Full Review

“ Not honoured a mortgage ,deed signed and payment...”

Written on: 27/09/2013 by Onetrack86 (1 review written)

As the title suggests, Halifax has just withdrawn their offer not only after the mortgage deed was signed, but after they faxed confirmation of payout. My case was one of a very limited number that was randomly selected for audit. They feel that there was discrepancies in the information I had provided. I can assure everyone that all information I provided was true to form, and have endless amount of evidence from my employer, my employers accountant and HMRC. This information I have provided… Read Full Review

“Best bank on the planet”

Written on: 27/09/2013 by SamerGhobrial (1 review written)

I've had my mortgage FTB through a broker I've had my name mis written then property changed so I had my mortgage reviewed few times without delay I work in accounting practice ACCA and things normally takes time but they were fast professional and they also paid the stamp duty. I would defiantly recommend halifax don't waste your time and go elsewhere. Everything will take 5 weeks more or less. Thanks halifax professionals… Read Full Review

“Quick and courteous service”

Written on: 14/09/2013

Having been declined by Nationwide for a mortgage my Husband and I were advised by our broker to apply for a mortgage with the Halifax. As we had already been declined elsewhere it was with some trepidation that we submitted our application to the Halifax and this worry was compounded by some of the reviews that I had read on this website. Whilst I appreciate that others may have been unhappy with the service that they have received, my own personal experience with the Halifax mortgage… Read Full Review

Hi there, your post has been really helpful. I have been given the same advice to go to halifax after our mortgage was declined by Santander 3 weeks after the application. Can I ask the reason for your decline from nationwide?! We have been to halifax and have been completely honest about our situation and told them of our declined offer with Santander (due to my partners credit report he had a default from 2.5 years ago) halifax have now given us a mortgage promise and have said they don't think it should be a problem but I am scared it will be declined again once it is with the underwriters . It's so frustrating not knowing for sure!!

Not a problem. We were declined on the basis that Nationwide felt that our current credit commitments were too high (loans and credit cards etc). I strongly disagree with this as did our broker and luckily the Halifax felt the same way as we did.

I know that this is a really anxious time for you both but please try not to worry about it too much. An application for the Halifax's Mortgage Promise involves a credit check on your 3 year history. As your partner's default was 2 and a half years ago this would have already been picked up and so take it as a good sign that you were given the mortgage promise :)

One of the real positives from my experience with the halifax was the speed at which they worked, so in the event that it is bad news they shouldnt keep you waiting as long as Santander did.

Wishing you the best of luck
