“great Hoover lasted ages and still picks up like it...”

We have had our dc03 for years, since it was new in fact. It has never let us down however my mum is a bit rough with it and broke the soleplate, a new one was only £6.09 new so I don't know where people are getting all these ridiculous prices from. Also they are anything but flimsy, we had to replace the dust bin as it was dropped down the stairs, and as expected broke, so we decided to see whether we could break it up more, it didn't even bend, it took ages to break and since we had a new one it hasn't broken at all. In my opinion it is the greatest vacuum cleaner ever. If you don't want to be ripped off for parts then use ebay, there are plenty of brand new genuine parts on there and are half the price of the dyson website

“Does anyone know reason why dirt spits out after...”

Ive had my Dyson DC03 for few years and it has always been very efficient but now has started SPITTING OUT THE DIRT THAT IT HAS JUST PICKED UP - DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO RECTIFY THIS PROBLEM PLEASE ? I do find the parts to be brittle and snap easily - my wand has been broken for a long time as it is top heavy and fell over but I stuck it up with carpet tape and it works ok. I also find that the hose attachments fall off easily. Apart from that it is the best hoover I have had and would like to solve this problem so that I can use it again- can anyone suggest the remedy.

“Dyson DC03 - Over-hyped and over-priced”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 14/03/2013

Main fault, as with other Dysons, is that in key areas of construction the plastic is very thin walled and easily breaks. On this model, when using with the frankly bizarre "wand" detached, the vacuum is top heavy. Mine toppled onto its back and the side of the wand housing snapped, writing the whole thing off. Looking at the flimsy design, it's easy to see why. I wouldn't touch another. There's a fitness for purpose issue here. In use, no loss of suction because there isn't much to start with. Dust container holds much less than would appear and cleaning out the filters is a frequent and filthy chore. The design of the wand is just plain stupid. While reasonably good on broad carpet areas, use is hampered by the limited capacity: It isn't suitable for large rooms. Tools are rudimentary but OK, but attached to the completely nonsensical wand become cumbersome and a pain to use. You can attach the tools directly to the hose end, but the hose is short and the tools have no proper hand provision and are uncomfortable to hold. This really isn't British design at it's best. It's gimmicky and badly thought out. With no real-world durability, it's massively over-priced.

★★☆☆☆

written by shpongled on 30/12/2009

Firstly, I do not own a Dyson DC03, or any other Dyson for which i am quite thankful for.

My job entails me working in other peoples houses on a daily basis, and quite frequently over the years cleaning up after myself has involved borrowing a clients vacuum cleaner.

The Dysons have always stood out, but for all the wrong reasons. The design is horrible. The colours are disgusting, and the plastic feels very cheap and flimsy. They flex and creak as your using them, feeling like it's about to fall apart at any second. Trying to remove the 'wand' has literally had me shouting out loud with frustration, it shouldn't be a test of aptitude just to get to it, this isn't the Krypton Factor Mr Dyson.

No loss of suction? Rubbish. They lose suction just like any other vacuum cleaner and are prone to getting clogged up.

To sum up;

* Expensive
* Ugly
* Fiddly & frustrating
* Cheap feeling
* Over-hyped

try getting a dc04 absolute or silver and lime
or
a dc05 absolute plus turbo brush (if you prefer cylinder vacuums)
these models tend to be the best built models

“Have had this DC03 for several years, but like...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 17/12/2009

Have had this DC03 for several years, but like everyone else, have found that it is made out of very poor material, in that most plastic parts break very easily. Because the design is top heavy, it topples over very easily, which often breaks the wand (handle), and which, like every other Dyson part, is ludicrously expensive. For those who have had the wand break, do as I did, get a small piece of 1 and a half inch waste pipe, cut to length to fit between the handle, cut horizontally along the piece, then glue around the handle with a strong glue, solvent or araldite will do. Mine broke soon after purchase five years ago, but after repair and therefore strengthening, it has not broken since, thus saving considerable cost. (For Mr Dyson, please feel free to use this advice freely.)

we have repaired and servived dyson dc03 vacuum cleaners for a few years now and we have found then quite reliable and robust, the main thing that we find when they come in for a service / repair is the hose blocked or the filters need cleaning / changing, but in the whole we recommend this dyson dc03.

After my pull along vacuum broke down I really had no idea what to buy, My partner has a Dyson DC07 which he let me have ago on and I was really happy with,

I thought about getting an 07 also but someone then gave me a DC03 in good condition but the wand was broken which I phoned Dyson over and was quoted £25.00 for a new one.

I then tried a Hoover store in town and they sold me a 2nd hand wand for £5.00!!!!

I set it up and away I went the vacuum picked things up I didn't even know was there!!!!

You really will feel shocked when you see the cylinder filling with dirt and dust!!!!

Brilliant vacuum and highly recommended by me!

Agree with everyone else, the Dyson DC03 is efficient but I find it a bit heavy and the handle is cumbersome.. The pastic parts are too brittle and break easily , I have now to replace the handle (wand) - it costs £35 thistime not £25 pars have suddenly become expensive. I may look at the bootsale for an old one to use as spares, there are plenty about.

written by mandystraw on 16/08/2008

I got given this by a friend, and find the suction far to superior to others when as an upright. However, it is very heavy, hurts my wrist to use, the attachments are difficult to attach and use as the handle gets in the way. I think that the weight if the machine was a definate contributor to the wand snapping off during use one day. Great cleaner but I would not buy one.

written by on 05/06/2008

The plastic attachments on my Dyson bbreak to easily and are not easy to use. Attaching the nozzle to clean down sofa cushions is a pain as it is not designed for ease of use - you have to push the cleaner away from you and manouvre the nozzle in such a way your arm aches. Don't pull the hose too far when cleaning the stairs or it comes of the attachment. Good as an upright cleaner, lousy when you want to do other things. Oh and it's heavy as anything.

★★★★☆

written by diefenbaker on 21/05/2008

When I first turned the Dyson DC03 on, I had the hose section out, pointing upwards and the force of the suction pulled nozzle up as it sucked itself towards the ceiling! The suction on this thing when brand new is unbelievable.

Two years down the line it is still serving me well, but weirdly it doesn't suck as strongly as it once did. I am not sure why this is.

That being said, it still remains an excellent vacuum cleaner and, without a doubt worth the price.

The only improvements I would like to see on it would be:
- A less springy hose
- An automatic cable coiler. I cant stand winding the thing up all the time.

written by LJG on 11/05/2008

The main thing on this Dyson DC03 is the durability, or lack of. The plastic breaks easily. Its very heavy & cumbersome. Poor design apart from suction( The wheel arches appear to be made to catch & damage radiator pipes). The suction head has a mind of its own & is not easily manouvered around furniture. Not easy to empty.

It seems that much of the plastic has small cracks and is beginning to loose little chips each time I use it. We bought the animal machine 4 years ago and I have truly loved it with the exception of the plastic fatigue. We were told that the plastic is not covered by the warnity.

Once again I think Dyson should not take this style off the market or at least remodel it with side brushes for edge cleaning.

Very unreliable and poor build quality
(i) The suction went on it through the hose, cost £50 to repair
(ii) Now the handle has broken near the top - new wand £25.
Old vacuums used to go on for years with no problems

written by Bsteers on 20/12/2006

I have been the owner of this Dyson, from new for about 4 years and have hated it since day 1! I found the Dyson DC03's performance lacking compared to almost every single other vacuum I've used before and after whether bagged or bagless. The attachments that have movable joints have all broken now, the wand's flexible pipe has had to be repaired twice as it broke from the rigid end part of the wand and is now held in with tape. I would not recommend this vacuum to anyone as it is not particularly good in any aspect of it's design or functionality. A £30 Goblin vacuum from Argos has more grunt and go than this DC03 - no kidding!

The cleaner does what it says on the box - BUT - in my opinion it has been designed to disintegrate over time. The cable has broken internally (twice); The carrying handle has broken; The extending hose has been replaced twice and bits of plastic have fallen off at regular intervals. The plastic is far too thin.

★★★★★

written by freelancejourno on 31/01/2005

I bought my Dyson DC03 secondhand from an auction for £12 in Salisbury (Netherhampton Salerooms). Yes, that's £12 folks.

The replacement clutch and service cost me a further £38. End result? You could call me a satisfied Dyson customer.

The wand seems very fiddly to use, and I'm far from convinced that it is actually effective.

Compared to my 1997-vintage DC01, the suction appears to be superior.

But would I have bought one new for £250? No way. These things are dirt cheap at auction, and even if I need to buy a replacement motor every year, that's a lot of replacement motors before I hit the £250 retail price of a new Dyson.

Surely the suction can't be that good. Afterall, it's only 90airwatts, and most new dysons measure about 250-300 airwatts!
