what are these people talking about? my husband ,daughter and myself have just spent a week on the island escape and can not complain about anything.we had great weather but for one day when it was very rough seas, thats nature for you.the food was plentiful and tasty.by the way you are not forced to do the excursions so why complain.this is when the ship is nice and quiet when all the miserable buggers get off. it was worth the money travelling on this ship , if you want the dorchester dont… Read Full Review

We really enjoyed our week on the Island Escape. The food was wonderful - I fail to see how people can complain. The entertainment was varied and they try to cater for everyone. Staff were polite and helpful. It isn't a luxury cruise which is reflected in the price but it is great value for money. The cabins are more than adequate and were cleaned twice a day. The only slight problem we had was sea sickness on one of the evenings. Our cabin was at the front of the ship which is where the… Read Full Review

the holiday was colourful coast cruise on the island escape ship. the whole holiday was horrendous. the cabin had no window, porthole or ventilation of any kind and the lighting was dim and dingy. it was just like being shut in a cupboard. an elderly lady who was part of our group was takem ill with the norovirus on our first night on board. the ships doctor was not at all nice. the lady was taken on shore and to the islnd hospital (gran canaria). the family oculd not speak spanish and could… Read Full Review

are you sure you were on the same cruise as us? it is no ones fault that one of your party got ill. i only know of one person who was ill with this virus, which out of 1500 people isn't bad at all. me and my family were fine the entire ship and my mother only got ill on one night due to the bad sea weather. baring in mind, this was our 6th cruise and we always experience bad weather on one night, you learn to deal with it if cruising is the holiday you choose to go on. i don't know what on earth you are talking about, but the sauna was free of charge aswell. as for the cabins, yes they were small but i had a better night sleep in our cabin that i ever get at home. if you want a window, you pay for a cabin with a window. you must have known that when you were booking. as for the pool, the children on board seemed to be having fun in it, so why does the size of it concern you? most people bring their own books on holiday with them, so the fact there was barely a library on the ship didn't bother me at all and i doubt it did any one else. the food was lovely and they had a good selection, so you cannot fault the food. the entertainment was also of decent standard, concidering they had limited space to work with. and of course you had to pay for the internet, that is standard with any holiday, including land. yes, the excursions are pricey but they were optional, so if you felt they were poor value, then no one was making you go on them. p.s you are completely overexaggerating!

I found this review not helpful because...it is no use complaining about the cabin being stuffy when you could have chosen an outside cabin. Also the books in the library are the same as in most hotels, left behind by other guests - surely you didn't expect new books! Yes, I agree the swimming pool is small but that is about the only true statement you made about the ship. As for the norovirus this has been rife around the world, a 24 hour sickness bug, it has been taken on board by passengers not the fault of the ship! I can only assume you are disgruntled because your fellow travellers left, but it is unfair to leave a negative review like this when other travellers are now wondering what the holiday they have booked will be like.

I can't begin to image what some of the bad reviewers were expecting. For the price of this cruise I believe 1) the food is excellent, plenty of choice and well prepared 2) the entertainment is very professional and plenty of choices 3) the cabins are much the same size as on any other cruise, comfortable beds, all the facilities you need, hot showers and perfectly operating loos! 4) the staff are so friendly and willing to help they cannot be faulted. This is our second trip and both have been… Read Full Review

awful, awful, awful, the worst holiday we have ever been on, it was just totally dreadful from start to finish! the cabins are small, dirty and drab, the ship itself is in desperate need of a total refurb or even scrapping, what with the cabin size and the plastic mugs and plates it felt like being in prison!the food was basic and tepid, we all couldnt wait to get back home, it was a complete and utter waste of money,i have seen bigger blow up swimming pools than the one on board and the smell… Read Full Review

I found this review not helpful because...I have been on the same cruise and it is nothing like this. The cabins are small yes, but they are cleaned several times a day. The plastic tableware is only in one of the restaurants, there are two other restaurants which serve excellent food and we never had anything that was not hot. Ignore this review and read some of the other more truthful ones.

You get what you pay for. Positives outweighed the negatives. The ship and our cabin was kept spotlessly clean. It was small and tired looking though and the American plugs meant we had to buy an adaptor on board so consequently some electrical items did not work. Make sure you bring a travel hairdryer there are none in the cabins and only a limited amount to hire out on board. Food was very good, great choice and variety. Could have been a bit hotter on occasions but always plentiful and well… Read Full Review

Worried after bad reviews but we had a fab time. The ship is shabby in parts particularly the cabins but they are trying to smarten it up and cleanliness is a high priority. The food was great and the entertainment trys to cater for a wide range of tastes. It is very low key which suited most people on board but might not have appealed to seasoned cruisers used to bigger smarter vessels. The staff were marvellous and the ports of call, apart from Agadir, very enjoyable. We had the cruise at a… Read Full Review

We have just returned from our first cruise and after reading some negative reviews were not sure what to expect. In fact I really do not know what the people who had a "bad" experience wanted from this holiday as we had no cause for complaint and thoroughly enjoyed the holiday. The food was excellent, with a wide choice at every meal and unless you wanted junk food, it was of a standard to be found in any decent restaurant. I did not particularly like the Beachcomber restaurant with the… Read Full Review

My husband and I have just returned from the best holiday we have ever had!
Everything was faultless, attentive staff, wonderful food and fantastic entertainment. We liked the fact everything was so relaxed, if you felt like dressing up for dinner you could or the facility is there to dine informally. We like the element of surprise, it was great exploring the ship finding out where everything was, how anyone could say they didn't enjoy the experience is beyond us. Just had a great cruise on the Island Escape. Ship is a bit dated but the staff are great and the quality of entertainment was top class.Food was good and there is a wide selection of bars. Some rooms are being refurbished during the cruise and I understand the whole ship is to be refurbished at the end of the year. The ship was originally a cruise ferry so don't expect 5 star this is very much 3 star. Most people had a good time except the usual moaners where nothing was right. If you have bad… Read Full Review

This is our second cruise with Island Cruises, the last one being with the Island Star and having read the reviews for this ship I felt very concerned, but need not have worried. Not sure what ship the moaners were on but certainly not the Island Escape. A number of people has read the same comments and disagreed with them. Whilst the ship is a little tired it is very clean and I noticed that a number of cabins were being refurbished as we sailed but our cabin had already had new… Read Full Review

I'm absolutely amazed at the difference in these reviews. Some score it only one star while others score it five. Just proves that we all have completely differing standards and expectations. I notice that the Captain has been changed since our dreadful time at Christmas. Glad you enjoyed it but we wouldn't go on that thing if you paid us.

Written on: 07/03/2010

The worst holiday ever! I feel sorry for a lot of decent people who paid a lot of money for this cruise, over a thousand pounds. We found out some had only paid about four hundred! The cabins were disgusting & filthy and the main restaurant was like a bun fight, with children running everywhere and lots of horrible loud chavs eating like it was their last meal. The entertainment at times was cringe worthy. I've never seen so many acres of undulating flesh and tatoos, yuk. Still, that's what… Read Full Review

I must agree with this revue. Most comments are not made lightly. They are made after having a bad experience. We too have sailed on this ship. The problem being that this little hulk is not fit to sail in the stormy waters of the Atlantic in winter. Fine for the med in summer. We too have spent a fortnight with the bugs and the rat noises(there are no rats on this ship) possibly a cause for concern as rats always desert a sinking ship. Food good to great. But Im easy pleased. Entertainment musicals opera, opera musicals, pool hmmm. Libraryhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. If cheapo cruising and low targets is your aim then this is the one for you

Hi - We have cancelled our cruise on the Island Escape for July 2010, due to the many negative reviews posted on several cruise review websites. I have noted that most of the good reviews for the Island Escape mention that it is 'good value for money' - but I wonder if would you still be happy with it if you had paid £1500 a week (the price Thomsons were charging us)for two people in an inside cabin in July? Palmeyra's Response to Loopyloo99's Review

Written on: 07/03/2010

Believe me you have done the right thing! We have been on over twenty cruises, and NEVER before have we complained about anything, but this ship was really way below standard. Some people say it is spotlessly clean. . . Well, either they have bad eyesight or their standards of cleanliness are strange. Our duvet was absolutly filthy, even the covers were grey. the pillows smelled of human sweat. We got a very cheap deal from our home port (Tenerife) so at first we were pleased, but believe me, we were looking forward to coming home. the food in the paying restaurant is as cruise food should be . . but we were only able to book once as it was full throughout our cruise. In the buffet it was edible, but not a pleasure. Go a little more upmarket like Royal Caribbean, or even Costa . . . and have a great time. Thank your lucky stars you read the reviews, and believed them! Valerie martin arvelo.

Refined Retiree's Response to Loopyloo99's Review

Written on: 15/03/2010

We have just spent a week on the Island Escape, paid around £560 each full board and cannot believe some of the negative reviews on here! The ship is a bit shabby in places, but certainly not dirty and I can assure you I am not easily pleased when it comes to cleanliness. The food in the restaurant on Deck 6 was excellent, as good as in any decent restaurant, with a wide choice and as much as you wanted. I did not particularly like the 24 hour Beachcomber restaurant as it reminded me of a works canteen, so we only ate there when leaving on an early morning excursion before the Deck 6 restaurant opened. The clientele were mixed, some people you would not want to mix with in every day life, but we just avoided them. It is a shame you have cancelled your cruise, but I agree it is silly to pay full price when there are internet deals to be had cheaper. We read the reviews before we went and were also unsure of what we had let ourselves in for, but we had booked so took it as it came and it was certainly nowhere near as bad as some people made out.
I think that if you can get a cheap/special deal or last minute offer on this ship, it may be (just about) satisfactory....
Potential cruisers be warned! don't pay full prices to cruise on this ship -If you are brave enough, there are currently deals for around £399 for a week to go on this ship.

However, despite missing ports, force 10 gales and leaving passengers on Lanzarote, it was brilliant.
There were a fair number of whingers on board but the bottom line is you get what you pay for. My mum and brother go on the Aurora - I don't! The trip started off well but because of the bad weather and not been able to port in Las Palmas and Morrocco it meant more time at sea. Not what you want in force 11 gales and horrendous storms. Most people were sick and confined to their rooms. In my oppinion this ship shouldn't have sailed with passengers on board during this time when they knew the weather was going to be bad. Written on: 22/02/2010

Hi - my family and I were on this cruise and basically the passengers divided into two groups - cheerful appreciating the opportunity of an affordable cruise and the moaners! I heard people complaining that the food was a buffet not waiter service but it was clearly stated in the brochure ! Although the weather was bad it is not fair to say that people were confined to their cabins this is simply not true! We were out and about with plenty of others and even slept through the force 10 due to plentiful 'all inclusive' G&Ts! Wise up people - if you want a fancy cruise pay the prices if you want a decent package holiday on a boat go for this! My kids have stayed in Disney Florida five star accommodation for the last two years and enjoyed this just as much!
From Dianne (tired of scrounging, middle aged whingers (although I am middel aged!)). If you have booked already don't let the whingers put you off - the staff & food are exceptional. Gran Canaria fantastic.
