my husband and i were in scarborough on the 29th september and went into the restaurant for a meal the restaurant was practically empty and so i found a seat in the window and my husband joined me after visiting the toilet the restaurant emptied apart from one patron and the waitress was more interested in wiping tables and clearing up than taking our order after a wait of 15 minutes my husband and i walked out because we were just being ignored and found this very ignorant and bad service we had a meal from the takeaway and this was disgusting too and soon went cold i would never recommend this place again too anyone and we will never again have a meal there it was bad customer relations and the service stank

“Awful food, awful staff!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by UnhappyCamper27 on 26/05/2013

This was a few years ago at the Merry Hill Shopping Centre branch. I was queuing in the takeaway section of the restaurant and our 3 year old needed the toilet. As we were buying our food there anyway, my partner took him into the restaurant part of Harry Ramsdens and asked if our son could use the facilities. The restaurant was empty (pre lunch time rush). My son was dancing on the spot. The assistant wouldn't let my son in to use the toilet! It was pointed out to her that I was in the queue in the takeaway part but still she said it was for restaurant customers only. Our food was being wrapped but partner came back and once I realised what had happened, we left the food and never went back. Harry Ramsdens HQ essentially said that they didn't see a problem with what the assistant had done. I'm not being funny but when a child needs the toilet, they need to go! We were paying customers of the takeaway part and the nearest toilets were a 10 minute walk away. That branch has now closed down and been replaced with a soft play centre for children, the irony! I wouldn't bother with Harry Ramsdens again, even though they had a good reputation at one point. If the food is as awful as the service then I think we had a lucky escape.

“Worst fish and chips I have eaten in my whole life.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by phototrain on 07/12/2012

Today I have suffered the worst fish and chips that I have been served in my whole life (64 years). This so called meal was served up at the Lakeside Shopping Centre Essex. The large cod portion was more batter than fish and so dry that it was barely edible. The fish what there was of it was the driest that I have ever had and judging by the colour had not seen the sea for a good many months. My opinion is stay well clear of Harry Ramsden it is complete rubbish and over priced. H

“Embarrassing experience.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 25/08/2012

I took a friend to the McArthur Glen Outlet near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. She always enjoys fish and chips and was keen to try the 'famous' Harry Ramsdens meal. I was totally embarrassed and had I been on my own I would have taken the food back to the counter and asked for a refund. The chips were tiny dried up offerings and we were charged an extra £1.20 for dried up mushy peas. The gougons of fish were greasy and barely edible. Something surely must be done to ensure that the previously good name of Harry Ramsden is saved. Disgusting!

Harry Ramsden, Bournemouth My Harry's Club number is 6633. I regularly visit the above Harry's restaurant with my mum and have found the service & the quality there outstanding. However on visiting today, we were both somewhat disappointed and shocked at what is happening there, Harry's has the best reputation for outstanding fish & chips & the traditionalism is liked by all, after all that is what made them famous. So to visit today & see the awful changes that have been made there was a shock, firstly the so called background music was so loud you could not hear yourself think, let alone have a conversation, if i wanted to experience that i would visit a nighclub, secondly the waitress that served us needs to return to charm school, she was abrupt, hovered over the table & no sooner had i finished the last mouthful of my drink the glass was whisked away & i was certainly not offered another one, she kept removing plates & dishes before we had even finished, and before we could even sort the money out for the bill she was hovering and trying to take it away before we were ready. thirdly the quality of the food & drink, and menu was certainly not as good as before, the coffee was undrinkable and when mentioned to the waitress she just shrugged. The tables used to be laid with napkins and nice clean cutlery, a china vinegar bottle, now we have a tin bucket, with the cutlery in & serviettes, plastic sarsons vinegar bottle making it look like a cheap roadside cafe. then when the food arrived instead of being nicely served on the plate as before, the chips arrived served in a tin cup. The majority of people in bournemouth are elderly and they make up the main core of the trade in your bournemouth branch, i am not elderly i do add, but to alienate your main core of business is not a wise business move. I would like to add on exiting your premises my mother & i were discussing the situation, and another couple leaving overheard us, & totally agreed with everything that i have mentioned above, & unfortunately two other couples who were arriving overheard us & asked us what the changes were like we explained what we had experienced & both couples turned & walked away, so sorry but word of mouth is the strongest form of advertising, and will result in loss of business, we used to strongly recommend harry's to family, friends & total strangers if stopped in bournemouth & asked where the best place to eat was, now all we can do is strongly recommend against it. I look forward to hearing from you regarding the above comments, but we shall not be visiting again. I know that you need to move with the times, but to try & mend something that is not broken is the downfall of many businesses. I SENT THIS AS AN EMAIL TO HARRY RAMSDENS ON THE 30TH MAY 2012, & TODATE THEY HAVE NOT EVEN HAD THE DECENCY TO REPLY

“------------------Disappointed”

Harrys Ramsdens Scarborough, scruffy place, slow service took 20mins to take our order. Food nothing special, over priced, over cooked and tasteless, Tartre sauce served in a pudding dish!!!! They had run out of custard so didn't bother with a sweet. What happened to white table cloths and friendly staff along with good quality fish n chips which Harry Ramsden was famous for. Next day out in Scarbourgh will not include a trip to Harry Ramsdens

“exeter, motorway right by this tourist trap rip off”

★☆☆☆☆

written by lesbud1 on 18/05/2012

took my brother there after singing its praises. what a mistake. cod was as flat as the proverbial pancake. I even remember remarking that the fish could have been put in an envelope and posted! when the waitress was asked if it was the normal harry ramsden fish she said it was. my sister-in-laws haddock was a peachy colour, I had never seen haddock that colour before??? I complained through their website and was told that the fish is supplied and is frozen... they were not bother basically. they obviously rely on tourist travelling through, and not having to rely on regulary customers. do yourself a favour and do not go there.... it was a total waste of time and money.....a tourist trap of a rip off.

“Guisley, Leeds and Bournmouth Harry Ramsdens ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 28/03/2012

I live in Oxford but am originally from Yorkshire. When we used to come to Yorkshire once a year we always went to HR in Guisley, the fish and chips were always good and the tea and coffee were included in the price. The last time we went was about four years ago and we had to pay for our tea/coffee seperately, every time we went after that the place just got worse. Last year we went to HR in Bournmouth and it was totally different, the staff were very courteous and nothing seemed to be too much trouble, although expensive the fish and chips were delicious and you got a generous portion. For those of you in Yorkshire who had awful meals may i suggest you pay a visit to Skipton, north yorks, there are two brilliant fish restraunts there, one in the big car park and the other one just over a little bridge up from the railway station, absolutely delicious ( they are both called "Bettys"

“Fish and chips costing £158”

★☆☆☆☆

written by bshepp10 on 18/10/2011

A very average fish and chips from a so called world famous restaurant, but by far the biggest disappointment is that the management have employed a 'cow-boy' parking scheme, designed to fine their customers, making enough money from them from their first purchase for them never to return. I sat in the car whilst my friend nipped in to pick up our fish and chips, in the 'customer parking' 'free' to customers.... Free... ABSOLUTELY NOT. I ended up getting a letter with a £75 fine, going up to £150 if it isn't paid within 10 days of receiving the letter. An absolute farse, at no point was my friend asked if he had parked, or told about having to register the vehicle. On my second inspection of the property I did notice the signs in the car park, however only until you go inside do they make sense as they say free parking for 'registered' customers, meaning you must go into the restaurant (I mean restaurant here as its not even possible to register in the take-away parlor). I was disgusted that my friend was not made aware of this and being a legitimate customer I should not have to pay this fine. Its safe to say that I will ban all my friends from ever visiting a Harry Ramsdens ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A bunch of pirates!!!!!!!!!!

We went on holiday and heard of Harry Ramsdens and decided that we would see how it compared to Yorkshire Fish and Chips. To be honest it took an hour for our food to be served, the chips were soggy and if you tried to lift one up it would fall apart. The fish portion was small even if it was a large portion. The overveiw was that it thought it was more than it was worth and DEFINITELY is not better than Yorkshire fish and chips. P.S better of going to the chippy.

“We visited Harry Ramsdens Scarborough, ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/03/2011

We visited Harry Ramsdens Scarborough,
Just sent this to Trading Standards:
To whom it may concern,

My wife and I had my brother and his wife visit us last weekend I took them for lunch at the restaurant on the sea front.
We ordered 4 fish & chip meals (2 cod 2 haddock) which we waited almost 30 mins to receive, I was absolutely flabbergasted to see what arrived at the table.
Frozen Chips (poorly cooked some frazzled and some soggy).
Supermarket style processed fish portions (with bones slimy fish and soggy batter underneath).
Bright green mushy peas exactly the same colour and taste as the tinned product.

Most of the meals were left unfinished the whole serving was tasteless, we decided not to raise the matter with the teenage staff, clearly they would not be capable of producing fresh Fish & Chips when they are quite obviously only supplied with processed fast food to cook with.
For this we were charged over £40.00 the most expensive Fish & Chips I have encountered in Scarborough to date.
As far as I am concerned they are giving the public the wrong impression of what they are serving in this restaurant.

they are quite clearly deceiving the paying public into believing they will enjoy the world famous Harry Ramsdens fish & chip experience, this is declared on all their advertising literature, their website, and even on the tourist board site. this will need to be stopped, they are serving pre-processed frozen supermarket low quality food under false pretences.

written by on 25/11/2010

Waited 20 mins for the food and the when it arrived the chips were burnt. I told the waitress to take them back and refused to pay. The 'Manager' told me i had to pay for the drinks regardless of whether i had eaten the food or not and when i refused he called the centre security. Manager was totally rude and didnt see a reason why he shouldnt have sent out burnt food. Centre security guard told me it wasnt the first time hed witnessed the manager being rude to customers and reported him to the centre management for me.

Avoid this place at all costs!

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 29/07/2010

Harry Ramsdens was world famous because he cooked in dripping, the smell alone dragged to towards his restraunts, saddly when they stopped using dripping the quality was no longer any better than your average chippy.
You now have to go to yorkshire to get the best fish and chips.
