“Do not buy Mercedes A160”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 16/03/2018

I bought the car in December 2016 in Singapore second hand, 2002 model. It's a beautiful car but has a very terrible reliability. It started with the fuel pump, wiper washer pump, electric mirror motors, interior mirror and the worst the car started to jerk on each and every stop and acceleration afterwards, gear box failed and also EPS/ABS pump spoiled. Mercedes Singapore asked for 17K to change the gear box and 7K to replace the EPS/ABS pump. Even thou giving the car to a non Mercedes mechanic specialized in gear box overhauling the repair costed 6+K. The problems still continued and after 6 month the car was in my possession I sold the car off with a huge loss. So please think twice to get yourself an A160, never again for me! I expected more from a Mercedes, reliability at least.

“worst car ever had”

written by on 06/04/2012

This car looks fine and have a lot of luggage space. after 2 years it started to have one problem after the other. No one likes to fix it and charge you a lot. Now i have a automatic gear box problem. How Mercedes build this car is beyond my imagination. I think this is the worst car ever came across.

I have had a 170CDI A Class from new in 2003 - a delightful car and never had any problems with it. Regularly serviced to makers recommendations.
In fact am looking to buy a second hand one to similar specification.

“Worst car I ever owned”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 27/06/2011

I bought a second hand because I thought it looked good and would fit in nicely in my garage. However, I have been in and out of the garage so often that ALL my friends, relatives and office colleagues have advised me to get rid of the car. Gear box problem, steering problem, acceleration problem, gross lack of power that 650c.c. cars are overtaking you, leaky sun-roof, ABS-ESP signals and the list goes on and on... Owner from Malaysia

Have had nothing but trouble with the control unit in the gear box and continually have to have the wheels re aligned . Mercedes Benz S.A. has done nothing about my car. Every time it went in for a service they reset the the computer and it was a little better. Soon as maintenance plan ended they found the fault and quoted R22.500 .

We had our A160 in at Mercedes for 3 lots of work on the automatic gearbox , over R10,000. It still slips 'out of gear' from time to time. The changes are smooth except when crawling along jammed highways then it is very rough and jerky. Changing to 1st helps a bit but we will never buy an A160 again. especially after a starter replacement cost R6000 from Mercedes as the whole engine has to be removed!

The smell of petrol was strong for a while with no obvious sign of a leak. Eventually after seeing other forums say it is a faulty clip where the fule pipe connects in the engine bay i asked a garage to specifically look at that area. The watched - and watched - and watched - and YES! saw an intermittent spray of fuel leaking. it was small and intermittent so was evapourating quickly - hence i had not seen the leak before. Thank Heaven it is an easy fix to replace a clip. months of headaches from petrol fumes a thing of the past!

In March 2010 I took delivery of a new Mercedes A Class 180 CDI automatic. My car is only 72mm off the ground. That's less than three inches and certainly not enough ground clearance for our road conditions. It cannot cope with speed humps or uneven surfaces without scraping the base of the car. Surprisingly for a supposedly top brand, Mercedes refuses to repair the vehicle or take it back.Put simply,in my opinion, it is not fit for purpose. Think very carefully before considering either the car or the customer care you might want to get from Mercedes.

This car seems to spends more time in the mechanics garage than in mine. Three and a half months in the garage and over $9500 spent on the auto transmission. Then $700 on rear suspension. $2000 on starter/ring gear. I won't bore you with the rest. Its a brilliant car when it is going but sadly thats too infrequently. This is not the sort of quality one expects from Mercedes-Benz, and I would not recommend an A160 to anyone.

excellent back up by mercedes after sales, all warranty repairs done without quibble. Dedicated service representetive who follows the car from coming in to going out. I did find on my 4th set of driver seat belts that the ratchet has failed to work on a number of occassions. Also had rear suspension problem 4 times on my car since i had the vehicle from new. But apart from this I would consider another Mercedes A class mostly because the good outweighs the bad and the customer service has been amazing

I did really like my Mercedes A Class until it started to get continuous problems, it seems that i have had nothing but promlem after problem with it and the weird compact design of it makes it really expensive and hard to fix and nobody likes fixing them, I have only had it for a year and a half (second hand - bought it off my Dad) and it was fine for half a year but the last year it just keeps breaking so overall its dissappointing as i know it has been well looked after and driven but just keeps breaking.

The Mercedes A Class is a great little car, as the review say built like a tank and we love being so high up. Great for London. Handling isn't great but then it's in the city most of the time so is great for parking and normal city roads. Great car. Buy one second hand and you'll love it.

Wonderful car. Great handling, performance is more than adequate. You can take windy roads at high speeds, and the car feels in perfect control. My car has 177,000kms and runs like new. It is very easy to keep in good order, just normal service. I has a feeling of simplicity and robustness, and at the same time it is a highly technological and safe car.

written by on 06/06/2008

The Mercedes Benz A Class is such a disapointing car. We always had Mercedes at home, so when I needed a small town car, Mercedes was the obvious choice. Technically it seems to be sub-standard quality. Air pump burned out and damaged contol unit, needed new air pump and ecu. The gearbox (automatic) was dodgy from day one, but Mercedes never found a fault. Gearbox had to be replaced. Still not working properly. Spent over 5000 euro in the last year. Never again!

This is my first car! I have driven almost every car on that has entered the market since 2004 and every time I come back to what I have....there are features that I prefer over the new A170(2007)....I far prefer the drive on the older A-Class and the go anywhere, do almost anything capability! Although the car does seem to not enjoy steep inclines(>60degrees) the suspension is a little wobbly over speed bumps.... In all honesty, I love my car-still going strong after 130 000km...Definitely wont be trading her in till Merc bring out a better one!

Very disappointed for a Mercedes. I have spent already a fortune on repairs for this car to keep running. Very bumpy ride even though I replaced shocks.

I have the A class A160 elegance 2003. This is my second car first was a 206, and I have to say I'm sticking with Mercedes. This car is special its strong and bulky you feel like your driving a tank (in terms of safety) lovely interior, seats can be a little hard when driving long distance, cruise control is good although it only works above 30mph. The only problem I have with this car is the suspension, for some reason it doesnt like bumps or speed humps I mean its terrible, I've noticed that if you dont go over a hump completly straight the suspension goes all over the place, which made me wonder if the suspension is independant as it seems like all the tires are doing different things, I don't know much about cars, but im sure mercedes were aware of this issue. I look forward to upgrading to a B class soon.

“This Mercedes Benz A Class A160 was bought secondhand,...”

★★★★☆

written by Richard64SMV on 09/04/2006

This Mercedes Benz A Class A160 was bought secondhand, with very low mileage. Great for kids if you get the option for the elevating rear seats - they have a real involvement in what's going on outside; good for their feeling of independence - getting in and buckling up. The ride is fairly hard but fine on most roads. A great sort of car for fun holiday trips, in this spec feeling like you are doing your beach runs from the villa - "a sunny airy kind of feel". Good flexibility for driver heights, and elevating rear seats allow kids their legroom even with the seat right back for a tall driver.
