“great Value for Money”

written by mercmadness1 on 20/06/2013

I have a 1999 Model 230 SLK with 95000 miles, passed all MOT's easy as been properly maintained throughout its life, the Fuel Filter hould be replace at least every 3 Years as they can be a problem,.Otherwise a great looking Car with good performance and looks, The Hard Top can be a problem on some models and have a intermittend fault when to open and shut.So look out for that I am selling my one now because I only done 600 miles in three Years and she is parked in my Garage. I have a SL500 and don't need two Mercs. She is in silver, blue leather, come and have a look .You may fall in love with this Beauty. Also has a Privat SLK related Number Plate

“Mercedes te best or nothing”

★★★★★

written by Ardent on 19/10/2011

From front to rear, side to side this car out performs any competitor in its class. The gass mileage is comparable to as good as any Toyota, if not better. I have owned two of the SLK230 I was hit from the side at 30mph by a van in that car and was safe. It is overall of the 15 collectible cars I have the 2nd best next to my 2012 Maserati!

Good looking, comfortable for a two-seater, good performance and handling, with the bonus of a vario roof. Great fun.Reasonable insurance cost. Fuel economy averaging 30-31mpg (imperial).

Steer clear of official Mercedes service departments. Mine wanted to charge me £75 labour for changing the battery! Failure of a £5 compressor oil seal would have resulted in a total cost in excess of £2000 for a new supercharger from the same dealer had I not been able to source a new seal from the USA and my local garage not been prepared to rebuild the blower. So go to a good local independent Merc specialist and the cost of ownership is quite reasonable

★★★★★

written by on 04/09/2010

I feel in love with the car. I was six months old and I have had it for 10 enjoyable years. Performance is great and the traction control can really come in useful some time when pushing it too hard round bends. The ability to raise and lower the lid has never lost its appeal. Realiability is second to none, not a single serious problem in 10 years. To be critical there has been a slight rattle somewhere in the lid which merc spent 1500 pds not finding! One anoyance is with the exhaust which is SS and still original, but you just have to change the ordinary steel connecting bolts when they rust away. A couple of blown indicator fuses and some condensation in the headlights. On that subject, full beam (even without the condensation) is average and greatly improved by fitting HID units. I marked practicality low as lets face it, you can get much in the boot and only a 2 seater but even so after 10 years, this style and model is still my number 1! Get a C180 estate as a second car to take the kids and rubbish to the dump!

★★☆☆☆

written by Kinnoull on 15/04/2010

I love my SLK 320 purchased nearly ten years ago. It has only done 24k miles but has cost me hugely in repairs. The latest question - how much does it cost to replace a Xenon headlight? Answer £831. The reason for this I am told is that one of the components in the headlight failed and as the part cannot be purchased singly one has to buy a whole new headlight assembly. And of course while the local Mercedes service centre diagnosed the problem they came up with a huge list of other things wrong with it. When I decided to take the car elsewhere for repair I was informed that I could not have it back unless I paid nearly £200 for their diagnosis. I decided to go ahead and have the new headlight but took it to another specialist Merc repairer to have the other things attended to. It turned out that I had been duped - none of the other things needed done. Reminds of that Harry Enfield sketch - "I saw you coming Madam". Mercedes dealership repairs - what a racket!

“My car(SLK230Kompressor) has been bedevilled with...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/04/2010

My car(SLK230Kompressor) has been bedevilled with electrical faults. First the indicators until someone told me that you can extract a printed circuit board and tap the flasher relay to get it working again. MB solution a new £600 printed circuit board.
On holiday in France one day the retractable roof failed to lift back up. Big prob! Solution brute force and ignorance, I enlisted the help of 2 French guys and we physically lifted the roof up and forced it up into position and attempted to lock it into position at the top of the W/screen. Only one clip engaged but I got home. Apparrently this is quite common. Had it repaired by a local mobile mechanic, it now works but makes a terrible bang when it goes up and locks into position on the w/screen. MB wanted to fit a new hydraulic pump, megabucks (cost represented about a quarter of the vehicle's value).
Recently driving from London to Bristol on M4 started to loose power, obviously running only on 3 cylinders, after a bit longer got worse now down to two, but managed to limp home, awaiting mobile mechanic to fix. I don't dare take it out again because I fear that it might break down at the side of the road.
The car has been regularly serviced, I have found it to be a great expense and disappointment.
It would be interesting to find out how many Mercs are scrapped early because they're now too expensive to keep running. These cars aren't as good quality as they used to be!

written by on 14/03/2010

I have just bought 1998 slk 230, it has only done 40,000 miles and looks like new, goes beautifully, but a bit wobbly if you hit a dip or bump on one side, unlike a true sports car. My only complaint/ query is that the sort of rubberised coating on the centre console is peeling off. This could be due to sun ( I live in South Africa ) MB agents tell me it due to some people having acid skin? Any others having the same complaint?

I have a 230slk 1999. You will find that the peeling is VERY common.
<br/>I had the dash re-painted at a paint & body shop, using the original type of paint, for $300 US.

“Bought my little silver SLK for GBP6,800 two years ago...”

★★★★☆

written by griddlebone on 03/10/2009

Bought my little silver SLK for GBP6,800 two years ago which is about the prize of a new Corsa! Ok, it's now 12 years old, but still looks great and turns heads. I love the power of it, but it was a bit of a shock after my 589cc smart car, which was my first car after passing my test. I find the car very reliable and sturdy. I've only needed new tyres and pads to get it through MOTs. The only other thing that went wrong was a stud which snapped on the exhaust and was duly replaced, but with my habit of parking on curbs, in fields and on top of traffic islands (I'm a journalist and often need to abandon my car in the most unlikely of places) this isn't surprising! Ok, then so what don't I like about my car? The remote locking is very temperamental - it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. The brake lights keep going off, think there is a dodgy connection somewhere and the light on the dashboard which illuminates when there is a bulb out doesn't always go out when you replace the faulty bulb. The car is at best terrifying in the wet and in wintry conditions, be very careful especially turning right on roundabouts. Once you have got used to this you should be ok, but it took me spinning my little car a few times before I learned my lesson! As far as rust is concerned it's not bad, but I have noticed a bit of bubbling around the passenger door handle which will need attention and a few tiny spots here and there that need touching up. My exhaust is quite corroded underneath I have been told and I'm dreading forking out for a new one, but hey these things happen, especially with a car that's done 108,000miles. My boot lid is also a little out of line and needs a special trick to shutting it so that you can open roof. I would recommend this car to anyone it's soooo much car for the money. My boyfriend calls it girly but still drives it whenever he can!

Mercedes Benz SLK 230 Kompressor is a great driver that still turns heads. I like the retractable hardtop although it does take away some trunk space. The supercharged 4 cry is a good performer while getting reasonable fuel economy. We have taken some long trips that have been quite comfortable for two people.

i feel compelled to write a review on my 2001 Slk Kompressor, I am not the type to write reviews, but i feel a sense of responsability to say that this Slk has been the most reliable, car i have owned, it has 137.000 on the clock, six speed same clutch and I drive to nyc everyday from nnj, bought the car when it had 35.00 miles, amazing car, body looks like new, no rust...just changed the shocks i went with bilsteins, love them, i had a 190 and a 300 all great cars with over 150.000 each all great but this one has been bullet proof. same exhaust, had a check engine issue at 40.000 miles, car is amazing, the only thing that is not is the paint peeling on the center console, mb messed up on this one they applied pant over plastic and it is coming off, must clean the interior with warm water and soap and it pays to be gentle coming in contact with the interior. keeping this car until 200.000 and i will get anew model with low miles. My other car is a c class 2009 and it has low miles but it is also been perfect. the new mb are better than the old ones. great cars

I have an Mercedes SLK230 Kompressor, basically it's a loveley car, AMG17" wheels are too wide at the front and the steering is deflected by bumps and white lines, it's a pain that they're different sizes front and rear. Don't trust the electric trye pump they supply, it'll cut out before it can inflate the collapsible spare tyre. Buy a replacement from Halfords! Watch for electrolytic corrosion where there are alloy heat shields with ordinary steel fastners, (under bonnet and above silencers). The folding roof once failed to come back up but manual persuasion sorted it and since then it worked perfectly.
What the heck, it's a great car, good value for money, I love it.
PS I find that visibility for reverse parking is a bit poor with the roof up.

written by chaunceyoj on 15/08/2008

I bought this Mercedes CLK new for my Mom in 1998, it is a 99 model. It currently has 15,000 miles on it and was kept in Florida, in a garage, until I had it shipped up this spring (2008). I have every reciept and the window sticker. It is economical to run, it is an automatic, and probably could use an extra gear. People who see it cannot believe it is 10 years old and has so little milage, and that it really does look new. AC needs to be watched, probably some leaks in the system. Had an A and B service done on it, mechanic said everything looked like new.

The Mercedes 230 SLK is a great car if it is a second car or if you are single. Handles quite well and is actually quite fuel efficient, provided you keep the revs under 3500 rpm. If you really push the motor, this car will accelerate and keep up with most cars, but you can literally see the gas gauge drop. Overall it is a very nice car, not many problems and very fast. For me, this is my summer car and drive on nice days.

“My Mercedes SLK 230 had 6000 mls on the clock when I...”

☆☆☆☆☆

written by srafs on 23/05/2008

My Mercedes SLK 230 had 6000 mls on the clock when I bought it, within one month I noticed an electrical fault that kept the left hand indicator permanently on or, not working at all. Back to MB to rectify. Three weeks later the fault was back again so back to MB this time a new indicator switch was fitted. One week later back it came again but this time it € s in the brake lights so very dangerous when motorway traveling so back again to MB, this time they agree to change the electric management unit which they informed me would cure the problem. Shame it never did and within a month the fault was back again this time in the heated front seat driver side, the light is on regardless of whether the seat is turned on or off. 4 years later they have still been unable to fix it and it is now outside of its warranty so they are no longer interested. During these numerous visits to MB I pointed out that the nearside front side light unit did not appear to fit very well, I was assured it was fine. At 24500 miles while coming home from work on the A329m the light unit popped out of its hole and hung by the wiring, which damaged the paintwork so back to MB instead of home, the technician popped it back in and was unable to explain why it had come out, I was quoted £175 to repair the paint damage (its still there!) At 26300 miles the same front side light unit spontaneously ejected itself while I was traveling at 90 miles an hour on the M5 catapulting itself into the path of traffic behind me who swerved to miss an obviously flying object nearly causing a pileup. MB said it was impossibility for this to happen, that I had done it myself! (still trying to work this one out) but Greenoaks of Ascot did agree eventually to replace the unit FOC on the basis that I had pointed out on many occasions that it was a poor fit while it was still under warrantee. The car is now 5 years old, has done just 27022 miles and yesterday the clutch pedal disintegrated under my foot, (I am 5'3 and weigh in at 9st so not a great force to be reconed with unless you are a MB car). MB has said that as the car is SO OLD! it is only to be expected! obviously no longer built to last! It will cost in excess of £400 to repair and the fact that it has done so few miles is not an acceptable reason for me to expect it to be covered by their now expired guarantee. I now understand why when the car approached its 3 year warranty limit MB was very insistent that I pay £695 year for a full service and parts cover, this did not include breaks or tyres, and they obviously expect their cars to fall apart. Now after a life time of wishing to own a MB just 4 years of ownership has proven to me that they are not what they were, no longer built to last, and are no better than your average lower end of the market car and the sooner I can get shot of it the happier I shall be. Give me a FORD or a HONDA any day of the week please from now on.
