“Pet Plan is an Absolute Disgrace You’re premium goes...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ayerskd445 on 21/11/2022

Pet Plan is an Absolute Disgrace You’re premium goes up every year excessively in jumps like £15 to £20. Started off at £35 and eight years later is £105 . They cover absolutely nothing . The £780 dental work was considered cosmetic and not covered . I have stopped the insurance now as the first time I make a claim because my dog got sick, nothing was covered because I had to pay 20% excess deductible which was the cost of the visit and so Pet Plan wiggled their way out of paying anything. I paid and they didn’t . I cannot for the life of me understand why I have been paying thousands of pounds over the years and nothing nothing nothing was ever covered under their terms . Pet Plan are a corrupt insurance . Put your money in a bank account for your pet and pay for things this way . Note I was paying £105 per month for a £4000 coverage Do you know that a simple scan and test was priced at £8000 so even if you have pet insurance your £4000 doesn’t even get you a test result let alone any treatment . And your excess on a £4000 claim will be £800 . So the actual coverage is only £3200. Meanwhile in four years you could have £5000 in your pets bank account and in 8 years over £10,000 saved for treatment . I massively regret paying into Pet Plan all these years . They only care about making money and not you pet.

written by petlan on 23/02/2020

I have been charged a 2nd incorrect excess and when I disputed it I have been given different excuses. I have had to get my vet and the physiotherapist to confirm this is all one injury and claim and therefore my initial excess was enough but no one is listening to me. I will never use Pet plan again and I have told all my friends about the terrible service I have received so far. I am again going to have to spend time tomorrow trying to resolve this. I was also advised my claim would be delayed by another 7-10 days and then received an email stating my payment had been made less of course the 2nd excess which is incorrect

“Annual price increases are very high. Lots of exclusions ”

★★☆☆☆

written by EmmettDougherty227 on 02/10/2019

The policy starts off as a good price but after year one the prices rocket up significantly (this year my increase was 15%, last year it was even more). They appear to think because its described as a lifetime policy you will feel locked in and pay whatever they decide to charge you. My dog had a cut to her paw when on holiday. The vets fee was just under £100. Even though the policy covered me they insisted I pay for a full vets report and an official translation of the report on top of the vets actual bill / receipt. They said I must pay for the cost of the vets report and the translation as that was not part of the dogs treatment. I had a vets bill giving a brief description of the treatment and cost breakdown, a receipt to show payment and to me this shows my claim was genuine. They were the ones asking for the extra report and translation yet they said that had to be done at my expense. I got the impression they were simply making it more expensive to avoid paying out even though I have an excellent claim history. You pay a premium service but when you try to claim they duck and dive.

“They know better than my vet”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Suzibear on 19/08/2019

My dog was diagnosed in May 2019 as having IBD and was treated accordingly by my vet. Petplan went back to a visit he made to the vets in March 2018 for a case of diarrhoea caused by some cheap dog treats he had had, as noted in the vets records, he did not make another vets visit again until May 2019 because of chronic diarrhoea in recent weeks. Petplan decided that the visit in March 2018 was IBD and therefore he was out of his 12 months claim (why if my vet suspected it back then did she not treat him accordingly for this illness). Despite numerous weekly calls chasing their decision when I appealed, they still insisted they knew best. Even my own vets letter confirming it was a result of cheap treats and not IBD had no effect on their final decision. Who knows best!!!!

“Delaying tactics”

★☆☆☆☆

written by LondonRoth on 14/05/2019

Our Pet Plan claim for vet fees remains unpaid on the basis that it is due to be further reviewed in due course. On chasing it up again today (14th May), they reluctantly agreed that we 'should' hear a decision within the next 2-3 weeks (having claimed on 12th April). In the meantime, if our dog requires further veterinary attention, we should let him die because there is no possibility of Pet Plan giving any decision on paying any subsequent claim - they would act in the same way; ie delay any decision indefinitely. We intend to take our complaint to the FS Ombudsman or sue Pet Plan for breach of policy. Pet Plan is useless - don't waste your time or money forking out on an ineffective insurance policy which is unlikely to pay out on any claim (at least in time to save your pet from dying).

We were devastated when our golden retriever puppy was diagnosed with elbow dysphasia at only 6 months old. Petplan have been amazing! Marley has had three expensive operations on his elbows all paid for by Petplan. They have also paid for hydrotherapy sessions to help with his rehabilitation. All claims were straightforward. Our dog can now walk without constant pain. I am so thankful to petplan, I don’t know what we would have done without them.

“Support at the hardest of times”

★★★★★

written by Willm321 on 30/03/2018

Our beautiful rescued Lurcher needed costly tests including a CT scan. He's an otherwise very fit 8 year old, so the results were a massive and devastating shock. Money was the last thing I needed to be worrying about, but I didn't have to; Pet Plan were brilliant! No quibbles, no errors, just quick payments and always sensitive emails, fitting for the seriousness of the diagnosis. There is no NHS for dogs so it would be useful to know more about the cost of tests and treatments, in advance of choosing insurance. It would be horrendous to know life-saving treatment was available, but was in-affordable. I always recommend Pet Plan and a life cover policy to people, it takes a big chunk of stress out of Vet visits. My future dogs will always be insured this way, so I can concentrate on giving them the love they deserve and any treatment they need, keeping them happy and healthy for as long as is humanly possible. Many thanks Pet Plan!

I cannot tell you how delighted I am with Petplan. I have been unfortunate enough to experience the death of one pet and am currently coping with a life-limiting condition of another. Petplan has been amazingly prompt in responding to my claims - which has ensured that the treatment and final weeks/months of my pets' lives have been/is as comfortable as possible. Added to this, the support of their website has been invaluable. Thank you Petplan. I recommend you one hundred percent.

Pet Plan Cover for Life pet insurance gives you peace of mind knowing that whatever life throws at your beloved pet, their medical costs will be taken care of by Pet Plan in a quick and efficient manner. Also when your best friend becomes sick or injured it’s extremely reassuring knowing that they can receive the best medical attention without causing you financial hardship. When my best friend and medical alert dog Jensen become sick recently, my claim was settled quickly and painlessly with no intervention needed by myself. Although my boy is by no way better yet he is however on the long road to making a full recovery I hope for I don’t know what I would do without him. I always insure my pets with Pet Plan and would have no hesitation in recommending Pet Plan Insurance to anyone. The staff on the telephone are extremely polite, helpful and friendly, Their website is easy to navigate and claims are settled swiftly and painlessly.

My sweet lovely cat came to live with me just over a year ago. She was 15 and was poorly almost as soon as she came. Petplan have never quibbled about making payments towards her care. The policy was given to me by the rescue centre and I continued the premiums. I am so glad for this insurance otherwise I’m not sure my little kitty would have been able to have all the vet care she has needed. It is such a relief to know I have help with the fees.

Check with petplan but if your vet advises against it for health reasons you will be covered, my girl was when she couldn't be vaccinated due to her developing autoimmune disease. The vaccine manufacturers state that it should not be given to an ill dog anyway. If you just chose not to vaccinate they will cover everything except an illness that could have been avoided by having the vaccination.

Recently, our 6 year old cat could not have his innoculations because it would have upset the medication he was on for lymphoma. The vet said that if your animal has been regularly innoculated throughout his/her life, they are still OK for at least a couple of months after the due date. Pet Plan were still happy to pay out despite this, and even when our cat sadly had to be put to sleep, all expenses were covered.

I believe that they will not cover conditions related to that vaccine - dig out the policy and see what it says to be sure...

I stopped getting my dog vaccinated due to problems with her liver, some of her routine meds were stopped at the same time. The vet told me that she could be at risk from those diseases but in our area it was only a slight risk. Petplan have continued paying my claims for her ongoing conditions. What I think they would not cover are the diseases that she failed to get her jabs for.

Read your policy. Mine states for my dog that Im not covered for any disease that she could be inoculated for but everything else is covered. I've found Pet Plan very helpful if you telephone them. I rang them to check the clause about the teeth as a vet should exam their teeth annually. My vet noted in my dogs record when she had her annual booster jab that her teeth were healthy. This has kept my cover intact.

The price goes up every year due to my cat's age, which would be the same with most insurance companies I suspect. Also you pay an amount every year (think mine is £100 but my cat is 16) for a condition and then 20% of each claim - which may sound a lot but if they have a condition like mine does with daily medication (diabetes = insulin and needles) it does work out cheaper. I've just purchased 2 months worth and that comes to £90. So eg that costs 540 pa of which I pay 100. Which leaves 440 which petplan would pay 80% of = 352. Plus monthly pet plan insurance costs anyway. But her condition means regular checks, blood tests, urine tests and as her condition makes her prone to water infection the antibiotics are also covered all under the one condition. So definitely works out a good deal even with the premiums. Insurance seems a rip off unless you need it! Her first bill at diagnosis was 4 figures and I would have struggled to pay that! And she's been diabetic for 5 years now. Hope the maths makes sense, it's hard to explain. Petplan is definitely the one vets recommend.

I claimed for my cat for over £1000 the premium went up slightly but this was pence and may have just been the usual inflationary increase you get with insurances
Report this content Andrea1952 Written on: 15/09/2016
It was discovered that my dog has a heart condition and they have paid out for his treatment with absolutely no problems at all over the last couple of years. In fact I think they pay out very quickly. I have also insured my other dog with them as I have been so pleased. The premiums have only gone up by pence (The usual inflationary increase I believe). I would have no hesitation in recommending them to family or friends.

Peace of mind is invaluable

No but once your pet reaches 8-10 years old, they only pay out 80% of the claim. I suppose it was noted in the "small print" somewhere, as I wasn't aware of it until I made a claim for my 10 year old cat. So you could say that the lifetime policy is accurate if your pet only lives to be 8-10 years old.

They did for us and imposed huge restrictions. I had my bulldog covered with them, he required 2 eye ops. They paid for one op then sent a letter saying it was a pre existing condition, wasn't and my vet even wrote to them saying it wasn't but they wouldn't listen. They then said they would keep him Covered for everything but his eyes knowing he needed the second op. And when renewal came up it had gone from £60 to £130 per month. My dog was insured with them from 9 weeks for the first year of his life. We wen elsewhere after the renewal came up and are much happier elsewhere.

I couldn't recommend them enough (I work with pet insurance quite a lot). They have a unique policy of not increasing premiums based on a previous claim. I normally advise the £7000 policy for cats and small dogs, and if you can afford the £12000 use this for larger breeds. (Ps. I don't work for Petplan)

I don't feel they do. My dog is 8 and started out with a £75 excess when first insured with them. It is now £105 despite numerous claims. My new puppy who is nearly 5 months has an excess of £100. Obviously the premiums do go up annually but only by about £3/£4. Hope this helps.

I have two 8 year old brother and sister cats Fred and Georgie. One has a common heart condition, the other doesn't. Fred has twice had several expensive tests to monitor his heart and Petplan covered everything without any problem. The monthly cover does go up a bit annually but it has stayed the same for both cats. I've found them to be very good.

No they don't. Had 2 claims already with them with no issue whatsoever. They do increase the premium every year (I suppose to reflect the increased age and risks of your pets) but claims should not affect it.

No they don't. Insurance goes up each year as costs rise for treatment. Should you make a claim then they won't increase it directly. I have claimed in excess of 10k for one of my moggies and they didn't complain. They without a shadow of a doubt are the best insurers in the market, the preferred choice most vets. They are not cheap but with pet plan you get what you pay for.

Both premiums have been renewed since then and only the annual increase was applied for which I am grateful. PetPlan have always been helpful and paid out promptly and definitely the premiums have not been "bumped up" because of claiming.I would have no hesitation in recommending them based on my experiences.

We've been with Petplan since 1989 and only have praise for the way they handle claims. Premiums increase as pets grow older as illness is more likely to occur but that is the case with all insurances. Claims are dealt with very quickly and their advisers are both kind and helpful.

My dog had about £600 worth of treatment last year and there has been no increase in his premium for this year. Very happy with everything so far and the vet can claim directly from them so it saves any hassle with paying them and claiming back. We have a new puppy and were given a discount for her. It is a bit like car insurance as you don't really know what kind of service you get until you make a claim.

Absolutely NOT. My Dog was diagnosed with diabetes 1 month after joining Pet Plan. Pet Plan payed the full £7000 in the first four months of diagnosis, supported me, asked how Bramble was doing Then at renewal, my premiums went up £2 a month, well below inflation AND most importantly Bramble is covered for life. I really don't believe you can provide your dog with better insurance care.

As previous answer they raise their prices every year which all insurers seem to do but this is not because you have claimed. It is worth the money and piece of mind, my 17 year old cat has never had a claim until this last year and I still feel its worth it, now I need to claim for a condition he'll have for the rest of his life.

Not in my experience. I had two claims for one of my cats and the premiums have remained the same. Not only that, but in the email I was asked how Skye was, not just "how is your cat". That was lovely to receive and indicated to me that customers are not just payments to PetPlan. I looked around before opting for PetPlan, which was recommended by someone at my previous Vet's practice, and I have never regretted my choice. Go for it! And enjoy your cat(s).

Hi, I have Pet Plan cover for three cats, my vet recommended Pet Plan as she had made two claims for the maximum and there was no quibble. I have claimed for both illness and accident which resulted in major surgery (twice). Most vets are happy to claim directly from Pet Plan Insurance which means that you do not have to pay up front. So far we have been very satisfied but I would give Pet Plan a call and check your requirements with them.

I have only experience with cat insurance and this has covered all my needs so far. Best place is to check with PetPlan I'm sure they'll be happy to answer your question directly. From experience PetPlan cover most problems and Vets are happy to deal with them. I have an on-going problem with one of my cats and when a claim is needed, I just fill in what I need to fill in, hand it to the vet who then completes it and sends off to PetPlan for me. There is usually a one off charge by the vet of around £5 for the first form but that's all.

Most if not all of the insurance options cover both accident and sickness. I haven't seen them offer separate policies which reflect one or the other. Pet Plan is the industry favourite amongst vets and owners, they are not the cheapest however they are certainly the best. There maybe more cost effective options out there, however what you get is reflected in their insurance quality. The likes of pet/animal friends are very reluctant to honour costly claims, usually trying to find some loophole in the policy documents. Pet Plan does more than just insure dogs, if you have rehomed an animal then 9 times out of 10 the shelter will offer you 4 weeks free pet plan cover, and should you continue to take the policy the animal shelter then usually gets 10% of the value of your premiums indefinitely. So you not only help your pet, you also continue funding rehoming centres for the forseeable. I have 3 cats and their insurance in total costs around £50 a month, however at least I can be safe in the knowldge that should the worst happen I have adequate insurance to cover it.

Go on their website and you'll be able to see its status

It probably wasn't... Getting money out of PetPlan is like trying to get blood from a stone!

I don't agree... there are specific rules to follow and they state them pretty clearly. So far I never had an issue with them and had 4 claims in total.

If you've given them your mobile number, they will send you a text message when your claim is received and again when it has been processed. If you've elected to pay the vet direct (most good vets process your claim for you once you've put your details on the form), then you will also get a letter confirming how much as been paid out on your claim (less the excess, for example) and if it's been sent to the vet or being sent to you directly. It takes a couple of weeks after you send the claim in. I once had one claim go missing, so if in doubt, call their claims service: I normally found them very helpful. I was a regular claimer for medication for over 3 years with one of my cats who has now sadly died.

Our claim was settled without quibble in less than a week, so you shouldn't have to wait long.

Go on to pet plan claims log in by your policy number and it will tell you your status. It normally takes about 2 weeks from going to the vets to getting an answer.

I got a letter letter letting me know the claim had been received and was being dealt with

The claim is now closed online and they emailed to say I'd hear from them within 7 days. So I'll just need to sit tight and see. . . . .

Sigh of relief and happy to say that my cats insurance claim was successful . What a worry it's been waiting, on top of him being so ill. He's well again and hopefully we'll not have to go through that again. Thank you petplan and thanks to all of you for taking the time and effort to reply to my post, thanks so much x

Would my dog be covered if for instance he strayed and got hit by a car or if i was walking him off the lead and he had an accident? Some insurers would refuse to pay out based on the exclusion below which is in Pet Plans policy details. Exclusions "- Any amount if you break the United Kingdom laws or regulations, including those relating to animal health or importation" Section 27 of the Road Traffic Act 1998: "A person who causes or permits a dog to be on a designated road without the dog being held on a lead is guilty of an offense". Would Pet Plan pay in these circumstances? Or would my dog not be covered based on their exclusion clause? Animal Friends clearly says they will not pay in these circumstances which is why I ask.

There are two distinct scenarios here. The first (your dog straying - escaping from your house/garden and then being in an accident) is quite clearly that. You would argue you have not been negligent if your dog has managed to escape from a usually secure area. The second, "A person who causes or permits a dog to be on a designated road without the dog being held on a lead is guilty of an offense" would clearly not be covered, as the person has shown negligence by allowing the dog off the lead while on a designated road. If your dog was in a field and off the lead, then ran into a road? Hmmm, did you commit an offense? did you cause the dog to be on a designated road? a grey area? Call Pet Plan and ask them, and get it in writing!! Hope this helps.
