“What happened to this great institution - its a disgrace!”

written by Ibrahim287 on 12/10/2023

Having banked with Barclays for 42 years , from a mere lad, they decided to close my account giving me one months notice. Once I got past the queue waiting to speak to a human, I asked for a balance and they couldnt give me a balance stating that the account was now closed. So what happened to my money? They then sid it was in a holding account and I should got my my nearest Barclays bank and withdraw my funds.....I live in NZ! The nearest Barclays Bank is 8000 miles away! Then the procedure to access my funds requires a lawyer to verify my identity which Barclays already know. Its just too hard to access MY money., so many hurdles in place. Here to help is their strap line.....I dont think so!

“Lost £11000 of our money!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Lorelai161 on 29/07/2022

Over the last 12 months my partner has had countless issues with them losing money, freezing accounts, letting someone change his address over the phone by not taking them through security, refusing to refund a £30 transaction which was made by someone on iTunes. Well this morning took the biscuit when he logged on to check the £11000 refund we were waiting to clear from HMRC had been credited, to find they had taken our money and frozen his account. They state it had been flagged up as fraud. It is a genuine tax refund from HMRC?? Now being told they have unfrozen the account but they don’t know what’s happened to our 11 grand and can we give them 24 hours to try and find out. We have 5 children including a 7 month old baby, my partner has been out of work since December as he has cancer and we have less than £30 in the bank.

“computer says no!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JohnJHM-Hull on 21/07/2022

DO not use this bank if you value your own sanity. They write their own rules as they see fit. the ombudsman review and management is simply a joke. If you find an error has been made by a company that results in money being noted as pending (not released) from your account it is your responsibility to manage or prevent the monies from leaving your account. When you do so and get an apology and note stating the monies will not be requested be warned Barclays will remove the funds and hold them into their pending account. This can impact your account and can take 15 days to be returned. You will be responsible for any unpaid debts from the account if you fail to have funds which Barclay has removed. They do this why? it's an authorised payment. You may ask but who has authorised any payment? well, you as it's your account. Why well they employ staff who follow computer set questions who can see you have not authorised any payments but can only follow the set questions Computer says no! Join this bank at your own peril. they are unfit to manage personal accounts, the quicker they close all branches the better. Ombudsman, see this as a good banking procedure for who? well, the bank.

“Don’t open a barclays account ”

written by Pauldoesnotcare on 28/04/2022

I have been with this bank for over 10 years and don’t know how I lasted. With all the issues I have had numerous people told me to leave this bank and I still have them a chance. What a waste of time that was. This bank is truly shocking. I will stick with Halifax

“Barclays is not on your side”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jocelyn1992 on 20/08/2021

What should I say about Barclays? Other than they are the epitome of a useless bank. I have been customer for some time and I had an issue where I was charged twice for the same transaction. I went to the bank and they had barely but I was told that I could sort the issue through the app, except I could not do that through and I was asked to phone. Some time later, someone answered my call just to let me know that I had to contact the shop directly and they could not help me. Great service, one wonders if you really need a bank like Barclays when it is never on your side.

“Barclays Bank Nightmare”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 356Egan on 10/10/2019

We were members of Barclays Bank (England) for eight years while living in England. It was exceptional. Now we are with Barclays USA and it is the worst bank we have ever dealt with. We have their Master Card which was our primary card to use and raise points for our time share (Bluegreen). The card is frequently cancelled because of our travel as they apparently pay little attention to our travel schedule. Calls to Barclays usually end up in the PI and there is a major communications/language problem. The reps in the PI have little, if any, knowledge of the geography of the U.S., e.g., we travel several times a week to Fort Collins, CO for medical appointments. shopping. etc. It is only 15 miles to the Colorado state line from our house and another 45 minutes to Fort Collins If we use our MC (Barclays) to gas up in CO, or make a small purchase at a fast food restaurant, our card may be cancelled. We booked a hotel in Kingman, AZ through their travel service and found out they had booked us in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Barclays US is a nightmare!

“Barclays Has Terrible Service and Policies”

★☆☆☆☆

written by brswan79 on 16/11/2018

Keep sending me pre-approved offers for the same credit card that I get denied for. 700+ credit rating, no debt, and $400,000 in assets. They say that they can't remove the hard credit pulls from them, but they are the reason that I can't get credit. Other companies have mechanisms for removing these. I also recommend not doing business with their partner, Choice Hotels. If they choose partners like Barclays and Bluegreen Vacations, I want no part of them.

“The absolute WORST!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ValdezVFisher on 01/11/2018

First these idiots sell my account to some off the beaten path bank called Mercury. Then, they continue to show a $3300.00 balance on my credit report, despite the fact I owed them nothing! Then, when I dispute the balance through Equifax, Barclays deletes the entire credit file! Over two years of timely payment history, gone! After waiting on hold over an hour, I get some non-English speaking woman who instructs me to mail this and that--NOT email, MAIL, to get the history of payments reported again. I won't even bother. I have an Amex Platinum. I think my credit is doing just fine without them.

“Deterioration of Barclays”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ecRogers133 on 29/04/2018

I have been with Barclays since 1967. and m now leaving and taking my million plus with me ... The customer cannot now even phone their Branch. A call centre in Liverpool. Are they Barclays or outsourced? DOD , mothers maiden name , sort code and credit card number ..all in the Name of Security! So I need to have all this info on me when out of the office ? How secure is that! Certainly not for MY security. Someone in a call centre in Liverpool now knows my details. I have sold my Barclays shares recently and now I intend to move my accounts All to know if my Premier Manager is available or out of the office today. They have become a tech based disgrace and that's why they are going down in customers estimation. A Geldorf Bank "***... you " the customer .....give us your money!

Avillapete's Response to Avillapete's Review

Written on: 01/11/2017

Update
Managed to go into my branch and managed to get this sorted
Money was refunded that same day
Very helpful in branch
Just phoning that is the problem
Barclays say phone security and ask your direct debits
But it's not direct debits
It's payments you have made on your account
And this needs updating as payments and NOT DIRECT DEBITS need staff that know what they are doing as these I spoke to have not a clue

“Appalling management”

★☆☆☆☆

written by MikeCL on 14/09/2017

I have been using their stockbrokers services for many years but decided not to move to the new platform as the cost structure was not to my benefit.I therefore asked for for shares to be transferred to SagaDirect. They immediately cancelled my account but after 3 months I still do not have access to my portfolio and contacting them is a waste of time as they do not answer. This changeover process is a nightmare, not just for me but for many others. Today they tell me I have unpaid fees so they cannot carry out the transfer!!! If this is true I fail to see why it should stop the transfer as my portfolio has significant cash in it and should have had more dividends added during the time they have suspended it. My next comments will be to the Financial Ombudsman. I suspect any potential users do as I will be doing and avoid this company like the plague.

“Banks with no staff ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Elizabethz181 on 12/08/2017

I have just been into the branch at Sutton. I was wanted to draw out quite a large sum of money. I asked the only member of staff if I could and in a crowded bank with a loud voice said I could withdraw unto £2000. I didn't want people to know what I was doing. Can I go to the international counter please I asked no you have to use a machine she said. I am a pensioner and I worried all the way home that people would know what I had done. It was a horrible experience. It was only a few months ago that a friend withdrew £300 and when she got home it was not in her bag. I hated every second in that bank why oh why can't we have at least one till to help us with a bit of privacy.

I signed up with Barclays and received a good deal - nice salesman. I supposed to receive my machine 5 days later, I didn't - 2 days later I called the helpline - the machine will be with you in 2 days - it wasn't - I called again, the machine will be with you in 3 days - it wasn't - tried again - it will be here in 2 days time - IT WASNT!!!!! so I rang the cancellations department and said if I cancel I will be breaking the contract as I was 5 weeks into the contract - I said the thing is I really want to use your machine as its a cheap deal but you cannot even post the bloody thing!!! after I pointed out they had broken their contract by not sending me the machine they agreed to wipe the £200 cancellation fee I was threatened with at the start of the phone call. AVOID!!!! Try Retail merchant services.

written by BeatriceDowney48 on 06/04/2017

I went to the Bearwood branch today which i rarely do any branch the customer service or lack thereof was unbelievable. I was accused of being abusive and racist just for challenging the attitude of the person behind the counter? The manager, i think although he didn't introduce himself was so unprofessional he started to discuss the matter in front of everyone until i asked him to discuss it privately, even then he started with she said, you said!! Unbelievable!!

“ABSOLUTELY no service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by VeRyDiS on 29/03/2017

I queued in Barclays at Islington Green, London, today for 15 minutes only to be told when it was my turn to be served that they couldn't serve me. The assistant said she had told me, which was baffling as she had not informed me or the ten people who were queuing behind me!I spoke to another male member of staff who called me a liar and said I hadn't been in the queue that long. I asked him to view the cctv before making such an insulting accusation. He became very defensive and unprofessional and pointed to a barrier in front of the counter. However I pointed out that three people had passed that barrier before me and had been served leading to a reasonable assumption that I would be served too as there was no sign up about which services could and could not be provided. I also pointed to the queue I'd just vacated as evidence that everyone else was expecting service. He then accused me of putting my hand in his face when it was nowhere near and I was clearly pointing to the queue to illustrate my point. I felt like I'd walked into some weird comedy sketch where someone was going to jump out at any moment but alas I was still faced with this joke disguising himself as customer service. I asked to speak to a manager who wouldn't deal with me when I asked her to deal with the complaint in private and then gave me the wrong number for customer service! What an absolute joke that this unprofessional woman is put in charge of customer service or given any position of responsibility. Outraged by what I had experienced in branch, I found a number online. It was basically internet banking masquerading as customer service. I was offered £25 compensation and expected to drop the complaint. It felt like bribery and I refused to drop the complaint. I'm still shocked by what happened and Barclays' response. I've been banking with them for 28 years fully intend to take my custom elsewhere.

“Pathetic service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Churchilloz318 on 22/03/2017

I have held current accounts and mortgage accounts with Barclays for over 30 years - never a penny overdrawn or a penny in arrears. My credit rating is perfect. I received notification re pre-approved loan - applied for £5000on-line - was told I needed to take my ID and recent utility bill into branch. I duly did this in my lunch break today -qued for 50 minutes - only to be told by the cashier that I had to make an appointment - the earliest appointment would be 30.03.17 - 10 days time! I asked if it could be done over the phone was told no. I emailed barclays on webchat - was told I could make the application over the phone - was given a number. Rang the number was told I had to go via the branch and the earliest appointment would be 30.03.17 for the branch in my town!! in this day and age with today's technology what a pathetic service!!

“Worst Customer Service Ever!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by restarks on 17/01/2017

Barclays is the worst company I've ever dealt with. I filled out an online application for an Apple card (to use the 18 month financing option) and they wouldn't approve because they confused me with my son who has a similar name. I spoke to 8 Barclay people, the last of whom was a supervisor who assured me that she was taking care of the confusion and would approve me right away. She was to send me a confirmation email right away. Guess what? No confirmation email. I'm at a loss to understand, in this day and age, how a company can be so poorly managed (yes, it's management not the people I spoke to who are the problem) and still stay in business. Again, Barclays is the worst company -- not just bank but any company -- ever.

“DON'T USE BARCLAYS”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ross1967 on 12/10/2016

In August I received a letter from Barclays offering a good deal on balance transfers. I phoned and arranged a transfer. At the same time I set up a direct debit payment and I received a letter confirming this. I was very surprised when I got my credit card bill to find out that the transfer hadn't taken place. I quickly cancelled the direct debit as I needed the money to pay the original credit card bill. when I phoned Barclays I was advised that because they weren't able to verify the transfer (apparently I should have received a phone call) they didn't process the request. They didn't bother to write and let me know. so I thought they would honor their mistake - but no! apparently they cant. they kept me waiting on the phone for over 20 minutes while they 'checked' this and still told me they can't. I have been a customer of Barclays for many years, having current accounts, savings account and a mortgage, but this obviously counts for nothing. I expect that if I was an important client to them they would have been able to honor. unfortunately now I have to spend a lot of time finding alternative accounts that are suitable and will be cancelling all of my Barclays accounts. When I renewed my mortgage with them this year, they made a mistake and didn't honor that so I should have realised. I hope that anyone reading this will think twice about using Barclays - they're a bunch of clowns!
