I think John Lewis Online is second rate internet shopping. Bought a £1300 JLRC101 Range Cooker (AEG branded as John Lewis) online, mainly because it would be delivered within 14 days and, I'd be at home for a few days around then and I needed it in a hurry.

We regularly shop at John Lewis. The customer collection facility in store is brilliant - pay for your goods at the checkout and they'll send them to the collection point in the car park for you to collect later when you've finished all your shopping. The sales advisors are knowledgeable and there is a wide product range available. Prices can be higher than elsewhere but then quality costs… Read Full Review

I purchased an MP3 player and a pack of accessories for it from John Lewis online. I didn't received it within the specified delivery time frame so I contacted their helpline. I was told the item had been sent by the courier back to John Lewis and they couldn't tell why (I was at home every day from when I ordered it to when it should have arrived so it wasn't like they couldn't deliver). Picture of product shown online (Crabtree & Evelyn Summer Hill gift set) did not seem to match the description so I contacted customer services to query it. Was told wrong information and so received item that did not entirely match photo and which lacked one item pictured. Very poor indeed.

We purchased a John Lewis branded item. We lost the receipt. We rang up and enquired whether an exchange for a different size item would be a problem - they said it would not be a problem. My husband took the item to the store, and his exchange was refused. He was told they didn't know if he had stolen it! We bought an expensive item at John Lewis. I had found out that it was cheaper (considerably) at another store, and so I let them know. They are refunding part of the price difference, but not the full amount. This is because John Lewis do not allow you to collect large items from their store - you have to have them delivered. The other store allow you to pick the item up from the store for free. But since John Lewis do not allow this option, they are charging us for what the other store would… Read Full Review

We ordered a Nintendo Wii in early November in plenty of time for Christmas but it didn't arrive and we had many a fruitless contact with online staff. Eventually they declared it lost in transit just as the item was in short supply everywhere. We were offered a refund but as they were still available online for a few minutes a day we asked for a replacement but were told that that was not possible and we had to reorder all over again! I was very disappointed with the delivery service offered by John Lewis. I paid extra for a Saturday delivery and the goods didn't arrived on the arranged date. I contacted them to be told that I would receive them on Monday. Apparently, it's Christmas, it's busy and they can't meet the shipping dates that they have available on the website - so why have them on the website ? I ordered a digital radio on the Friday afternoon, delivery was promised within 5-7 working days. It was delivered on the Saturday Morning! I think that's excellent service.
I haven't had to call to complain about anything or send anything back, so I can't comment on the after sales service but my experience so far is positive… Read Full Review

Note that this relates to John Lewis online operation rather than their stores...
The delivery department is totally incompetent, and even though the delivery van turned up to deliver my furniture, my items were not actually on board.
After several calls to customer services, it emerged that the item hadn't even arrived at the depot.
And as for customer service, I ended up talking to a different person every time I called, and there was no ownership of the problem… Read Full Review

I will never, ever, ever buy anything from John Lewis!
We looked at a John Lewis American Fridge (produced by Electrolux), and on an initial in-store consultation, we have been told that it will take two weeks to get it delivered to us, and that the best thing to do is to, instead of purchasing it in the Oxford Street store, we should purchase it out of the Brent Cross Store, as they have few in stock. Cutting a very long story short, I am still waiting for a £1500 refund to me 3 weeks after it was first promised. I have phoned their call centre on 8 occasions and spoken to a succession of people who appear to have no interest in helping me. None of my phone messages have been returned and you cannot be put through to the manager. On 19th March 2007 I ordered via internet flowers, chocolates and a card, to be delivered to an aunt in a nursing home for her 95th birthday on 27th March. I paid by credit card and received acknowledgment. I had no doubts that the gift had been delivered - after all this is John Lewis we are speaking about.

This Christmas I had a hugely disappointing experience with them. It has convinced me never to shop there again.
On 20th December 2006, I bought an AEG L86810 Washing Machine from John Lewis. It was delivered to me on the 2nd of January.
On the first wash the machine shook so violently it tore up our lino and damaged our wall.

I recently bought a Goose down super king size duvet and 4 pillows from the John Lewis store in Cheadle, Cheshire. I love this store, and I have always received excellent service with a smile. the staff are extremely polite and helpful, and they could teach other department store staff a thing or two about excellent customer care.
The items I purchased were of exceptional quality, and although the prices at John Lewis do tend to be on the high side, you really do get what you pay for.
