“How frustrating!”

Written on: 02/11/2012

Like many others it seems, I spent a lot of time and money investigating dog foods that suited my lovely bull terrier, Dolly. She loved Chappie, I was pleased with the ingredients and price, and she was very healthy. I bought my last ever bag two days ago because since then my poor dog has had an upset tummy and has been sick during the night twice. WHY CHANGE SOMETHING THAT WAS ALREADY EXREMELY POPULAR BECAUSE was GREAT AS IT WAS?????????… Read Full Review

I totally agree ! I have three rescue lurchers all have stomach issues , two of them suited Chappie Original down to the ground , excellent food and excellent value for money - Whoever had the so called brain wave to change it wants shooting ! . I have spoken to a lot of pet shops asking if they still have stock of the old original recipe and unfortunately NO , BUT THEY HAVE ALL SAID THEY HAVE HAD NO END OF COMPLIANTS about the new one , rangeing from size of kibble to the recipie not agreeing with dogs with stomach dissorders anymore - You know the old saying IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT ! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE at least bring back the old recipie and sell it along side the new one and give us consumers the choice as to which one we like and BEST SUITS OUR DOGS STOMACHS !

“"New" Chappie causing problems with dog's digestion”

Written on: 19/10/2012

I am glad I am not the only one noticing issues with the new Chappie Complete dry food. Used the old recipe without problems since we got our rescue dog over a year ago. Since changing to the new formula a couple of weeks ago, my dog has suffered from diarrhea and vomiting and also flaky skin problems. Several vists to the vet later I noticed a pattern - feeding her on basic home-cooked rice and chicken improved her belly but as soon as I started re-introducing Chappie into her diet, the… Read Full Review

2 mixed breed bitches fed original chappie for 3 years no poblem. No other changes in household or routine apart from new improved recipie chappie introduced in past two weeks. 1 dog is scratching intermittently. The other dog has itself scratched and bitten raw. Been to vet who found no evidence of fleas (not flea allergy). However allergic reaction also on investigation is noticable on internal mucosa, whites of eyes. My friends dogs are fine with the new recipie and she is thrilled. I… Read Full Review

We have a Tibetan Terrier that has had allergy issues from puppyhood. The original dry chappie was the only food he could tolerate. His severe allergy issues returned after only a week on the new improved recipe. Our vet indicated the same symptoms od internal mucosa; etc. We have resorted back to Butchers and boiled rice for his main meal and a handful of Nature's Best kibble at lunchtime. He has now stopped all scratching.

“New Chappie Kibble , Absolutely Awful, Will not buy...”

Written on: 15/10/2012 by ycycle (1 review written)

Having been feeding my dog the Chappie Original Kibble for last few years on Veterinary Advice. I am now looking for a new brand of low allergen food . The size and shape has changed, it has gone from dry to greasy, it has a gravy coating, it smells very meaty, it has gone from yellow/white to orange and 3 of my dogs won't eat it at all. My dogs started scratching continually within days of using it. I phoned their CARELINE and to be told the only improvement was its shape was laughable. The… Read Full Review

“Disappointed in chappie”

Written on: 04/10/2012

Like many other people Ive found the new chappie rubbish. After being advised by my vet a few months ago to change my dogs food to chappie after she was being ill, did so and she was fine and got a lot better, since givng her the new one, both tinned nd dried, she's refuseing to eat either and been ill again. It's smells horrible and is too big pieces. Very frustrating as I'm back to square one as I thought I'd crack what the problem was, I'm not sure what makes her ill but vet told me to… Read Full Review

“tinned chappie changed ????”

Written on: 28/09/2012 by dizdog (1 review written)

my dog has been on tinned chappie for nearly two years, advised by vet to help sensitive tummy, she used to enjoy her meals and eat all of her food and be fit and healthy, since the new style tin she turns her nose up and will not eat anything, if i put just biscuit down for her (Bakers complete chicken) she will eat her meal. She has had some sickness and loose movements which I can only put down to the food, I too will not be buying Chappie again until some questions can be answered… Read Full Review

“New Chappie - Rubbish!”

Written on: 28/09/2012

We got our dog 5 years ago as a rescue and it turned out he had a sensitive stomach. On the advice of our vet we started feeding him the dried Chappie - buying a 15KG sack at a time, and he has been fine on it. Since buying a bag of the new supposedly "Improved" Chappie at the beginning of September 2012, he has been very constipated and has had us up in the night at least 2 nights per week being sick and wanting to go outside and eat grass. I don't know what they've done to it (haven't had a… Read Full Review

“Worst new dog food”

Written on: 21/09/2012 by Rebsz (1 review written)

I bought a bag of the new chappie dog food 1 month ago! I thought my dog would love them seeing that it was bigger kibble!! How wrong could I be :( my dog has been poorly ever since having the new food, he had had a very upset tummy and two visits to the vets as he was not digesting food. I didn't realise it was the dog food at first. I'm really not sure what they have done to the food, but I cannot use it again. Which is a real shame as it was a trusted brand :(… Read Full Review

“New Chappie Dog Biscuits”

Written on: 08/09/2012

Re the response from Mars to Markanthony15091961, I have a bag of the "Original" Chappie so I compared nutritional information on the packaging for both old and new. The composition, analytical constituents and additives per kg have changed and the "Original" recipe also included poultry (4%) which is not in the new. An actual size illustration of the kibble on the pack would have been a good idea. To encourage my dog to eat the "New" (she has colitis) I have to break down the kibble into… Read Full Review

My 2 collies have been on chappie Original for years with no trouble, one of them now refuses to eat, I have tried him on the new one but he just spits it out, the new ones are nothing like the old one. We belong to a dog club , I have many friends in it that are also having problems with feeding their dogs. why could'nt they keep the old Chappie and bring out new flavours as well.
I would very much like to know how to contact the makers of Chappie

Write to Chappie anraise your concerns about the "new and Improved" dry dog food.
I e-mailed and the response I got was the recipe is still the same. I will now be e-mailing back with the nutritional information from the backs of both packs to highlight this is not the case. If it was the same, why does the "new" kibble stink!!

I will keep you informed if Mars respond to my next e-mail

Contacted Mars regarding the above and for those that are interested this was their reply...................

"We often found that consumers would find the name original confusing as they weren’t too sure what they were feeding their dog , so we redesigned the packaging and changed its name to Beef and Wholegrain. The recipe mix hasn’t changed at all, though we have introduced two larger kibbles that encourage your dog to chew and increasing the abrasion they need for good dental health.

.........if they havn't changed anything why are so many owner reporting the same problem, our local pet supplies told me this week that he has been inundated with people looking for the "Original" rather than the new as their pet wont eat the new.

I'm with you - our dog has diet problems and Chappie original (smaller chunks) worked wonders - it was the only thing she could/would eat. Now that they have introduced the NOT so 'new and improved' kibble, our dog will not eat it or regurgitates the whole chunks! They are far too big to digest and clearly not a welcome change to our dogs stomach! I have even written to Chappie (Mars) ! PLEASE bring back the Chappie original. I am pulling my hair out over what to feed our poor pet!!!

We gave a 8 month female German Shepherd and she has had colits twice and now found she has bowel syndrome ~ our vet also suggested Chappie.

We have had her on chappie now for over a month and its great
We also tried half dried chappie and half tin chappie ~ she loved it and her digestive & bowel systems seems great.

Nothing wrong with CHAPPIE !!!!!!

My dogs (Cavalier King Charles Spaniels) are all now on the canned variety of Chappie, and are doing really well. All runny poos a distant memory, no more gurgling tummies and trips to vet. Our vet actually recommended Chappie! (which is a revelation as so many vets promote expensive makes). Their coats have never been so silky and shiny. Would tell anyone to give it a go, whether you prefer the canned or dried varieties. Most supermarkets stock both (even Iceland!)

I am so pleased I came across your comments. I have had 11 dogs in my time and now have a 4year old Airedale. I have always fed him Bakers Complete but having been told and read articles about it I am looking to change. He also when over the park is constantly squatting and having a brown water like liquid coming out of his bum. I was being told he was marking but have never experienced this with other dogs or other dog owners with the same problem. Looking back I fed my past dogs on Chappie so having read your article that's what I intend to do. Thank you for your review Watch this space
