We went there for are honeymoon in April 2005, we thought it was the most amazing & beautiful place we had ever seen!!!! We have no regrets about this island & would recomend it to anyone !!
We walked around the whole island exploring, the bars & resturants were excellent & the service outstanding !!!!
We have so many wonderful memories of are 2wk stay & really didn't want to come home !!!
If you want to relax, sunbath on pure white sand, swim in a cristal clear blue ocean, snorkle to see beautiful fish, drink cocktails on the beach, explore what the island has to offer?
Then this is the island for you !!!

“Problems started from arrival in Male (airport) where...”

★★☆☆☆

written by pilsbree on 23/12/2008

Problems started from arrival in Male (airport) where the arrivals clerk had no paperwork pertaining to our seaplane transfer. As such (and despite us having the relevant documentation ourselves) we were offered a chance to "get on the boat now as you are holding up the other people" or to wait 5 hours for the next scheduled seaplane (taxi service is not quite an accurate description). Arrival in Kuramathi was chaotic as there was not enough staff to process the amount of people that had just stepped off the speed boat (80ish) so the whole process took in excess of an hour. This first few hours in the Maldives did not set us up nicely to relax and as such any minor niggle became a major problem which the staff just were not able to deal with. (e.g Honeymoon fruit basket not put in the room which would not have been a problem until one of the staff asked how we had liked it! We were then given 3 different versions from 3 different staff members as to what we should have been entitled to which left us confused and as if we had stumbled into some sort of tropical Fawlty Towers episode! Questions relating to the spa were dealt with a grunt and us being directed to a folder on the other side of the reception lobby, our table in the restaurant was allocated and not up for re-assignment despite requests, drinks service was painfully slow in the main bar area (although the cocktails were fantastic and disturbingly strong !!) and the football songs from one group were wholly unwelcome. Maybe in Benidorm but not what you expect in the Maldives ! In short, great scenery, fantastic accommodation but surly, unhelpful staff made this an extremely unpleasant Maldivian honeymoon. My second experience after a perfect first one in Olhuveli is unlikely to tempt me back to the country. Sorry Pio !!

Large Island, so the guests are quite spread out, if you move away from the beach where the bars are, you could be there on the beach on your own. All inclusive works well, better than others we have tried, if you just want simple drinks and a few cocktails then there is no need for any spending money. No shops. No Nightclub. Great Staff both Local and from Sri Lanka. They look after returning guests with top rate rooms and best tables. Food good. bad points, not there for long enough and mobile phone signal. We have been here three times and will come back again, first time in 1994 when it was a lot more rustic than it is now and before Coral Bleaching, but hey ho it's still a great place to chill for a fortnight.

The All Inclusive, staff, romance, totally relaxing. Best holiday ever - paradise.

Top tips: don't change £ to Maldivian currency, they only use US$. We enjoyed the All Inclusive, they had a 12 page cocktail list - hiccup! Saw sharks, fish, rays, lizards, geckos, fruit bats. So cool swimming with the sharks - they are completely harmless. Sea is like swimming in a bath, so warm and clear. The sand was almost white and felt like talcum powder. It is difficult to put the Maldives experience into words. The place is like living inside a dream, everywhere you look is like a postcard.

“My wife and I have just returned from 2 weeks on...”

★★★★★

written by HansStewart on 22/02/2007

My wife and I have just returned from 2 weeks on Kuramathi. It was by far the best holiday, in the most fantastic location we have ever been on. Our accomodation was room 247 in the cottage and spa, a water bungalow, from which we could go down our own private steps into warm Azure water, teeming with marine life. The reef was a 2 minute snorkel away but can be tricky to get over at low tide, those with children should consider a boat trip, where I encountered grey tipped reef sharks and manta rays, both completely harmless but breathtaking. The room itself was well appointed with all you could need. No television but if you were to want one you need your head read. We stayed on a full board basis and all meals were prepared to a high standard. I would however recommend B&B, as the other restaurants on the island are fantastic, especially the Thai and Indian, reasonably priced too. My wife and I would take 1 starter, 2 mains, 2 deserts, coffee and wine, which came to an average of £50 for us both, not breaking the bank by any stretch. The staff are without exception, polite, friendly and always glad to see a smiling face, from the gardeners to the manager. The cocktails in all bars are well prepared and delicious, Carlsberg in 2 pint steins kept me very happy.
The island itself is one of the largest in the Maldives but nowhere is more than a half hour walk away if you are young, fit and able. There are also regular golf buggies to give you a lift to any of the bars, restaurants or even home to your room at the end of the night. Just ask at reception and one is called for you in 2 minutes, at no extra charge!
We rented one of the catamarans from the water sport centre a couple of times and found them in top order with very helpful staff to launch and recover for you. If like me you can already sail, a 10 minute check of your ability is all that is required for unlimited access. If you are a novice, lessons are also no problem to have arranged. It is quite hard though to motivate yourself to do anything as Kuramathi lends itself to lazy days sunbathing and snorkelling.
There is one large expanse of white beach on one side of the island that is fringed by palm trees, perfect for those days doing nothing. On the other side of the island the reef is only 20ft or so from shore so it can get a bit rocky. However, if you go to one of the smaller beaches on this side you are more than likely to be alone all day, very romantic. The sand bar at the end of the island is great for a romantic stroll at any time but does get some rubbish washed up, thrown overboard by irresponsible sailors. Even though this is one of the larger islands, it never feels crowded and you are unlikely to see more than 5 or 10 people an afternoon, at bar mealtimes of course.
In conclusion, I will say this island is as close to paradise as I have ever encountered. If you are looking for a holiday that is laid back, relaxing and where time stands still go. I wish I could still be there and will definitely return.

Kuramathi is very informal and you can relax in the truest sense of the word - this is what I call a proper holiday. Do as little as you like. As far as money is concerned if you don't want to spend another penny you don't need to. The rooms are very comfortable and all the staff are very friendly. Paradise and we'll be back soon...

My advice to anyone is go and see for yourself and I am sure you will not be disappointed. We are retuning to The Village this April after trying Bandos Island last year, although Bandos was very very nice we just felt a bit more at home at Kuramathi, everyone was very friendly and it was just very laid back. Roll on April! We never had any trouble with paying extra for water when on the all inclusive package. I think as long as you do your research so you know exactly what to expect when you get there, then you can't go far wrong.

★★★★★

written by Gaster on 08/07/2006

We have been to Kuramathi Village 3 times now, and we are looking to book again soon. This is the most perfect location for a chill out holiday, with staff who want to make your stay as good as possible. The island is large enough to make it worthwhile going for a walk round it, to try to compensate for the excellent food.

The rooms are cleaned twice a day, and the sheets are folded in intricate patterns. Talk to the staff, they will love you for it and make an extra effort for you.

Go outside the reef for the most amazing snorkeling, and be prepared to be out a long time. There are new creatures to discover every time. One word of caution - wear a t-shirt in the water, as the sun is fierce and your back will burn.

We have not met anyone that did not fall in love with this place (except a family who wanted someone else to look after their children, so I repeat... There is No Kids Clubs)!

Can't wait to return!

I have been to the Maldives 7 times now, and have taken both my children since they were 1 year old. Our next trip will be my sons 5th visit (he is seven). As to whether it is a child friendly island is a very personal thing. Both my children (who are 4 and 7) have been to the Maldives many times, and they love it. Swimming, snorkeling, spending time together. I enjoy the company of my children, and I would never send them to a kids club any where in the world. And yes they have been to Disney, and would still rather go to the Maldives - Adults are not the only ones who can appreciate paradise!

Hi there,
Fair comment, but on the flip side, do you not think it's a little bit selfish considering people have gone to Kuramathi Village to avoid small children. People who have gone for a quiet romantic holiday. I Love children myself, however if there isn't much for them to do, then they will use their imagination, which usually means noise and running around.

“The location of Kuramathi Village in the Maldives is...”

written by Jean Saunders on 25/06/2006

The location of Kuramathi Village in the Maldives is absolutely wonderful. It is a large island with lots of space. We were told that it was fully booked, but some days we only saw other people at meal times. This island is a must for all romantics. All of the staff are without exception, from the Kuoni representative (Mr T), waiters, room boys and reception staff etc., were all eager to help us to enjoy our stay on the island, and they were always happy and smiling.

A must for the romantics is an overnight stay on Kandholhudoo island which, can be arranged through your representative. We were taken to this very small island by speedboat and given an hours snorkeling with a professional diver. We were then shown to our water bungalow, and this had a four poster bed and a jacuzzi overlooking the sea. We then had lunch, and later in the day went into the Spa, where we had an hours full body massage overlooking the ocean. At the end of the massage we were invited to spend an hour in 'our' Spa drinking champagne and soaking in a bath. In the evening we had a romantic candle light meal on the beach. The next morning we were served a champagne breakfast!!! Absolute heaven!!!

This holiday has possibly been our best to date. We came home feeling very relaxed and refreshed, and even more in love than ever. We have now been married for 18 years, and the trip to Kandholhudoo was an anniversary present.

★★★★★

written by Gez1975 on 20/06/2006

SNORKELLING - The singular best thing for me was the amazing snorkelling off the island, fish of every variety and colour could be seen just 50 yards off shore. We also went on a cruise and had the amazing good fortune to be joined by a number of dolphin pods who proceeded to swim in the bow wave and leap out of the water every few seconds - out of this world!!!

THE FOOD - If you opted for the buffet and avoided the stuff they made to cater specifically for the British/German/East European palette then it was great. Fabulous fish dishes including snapper fish done in a rotisserie, superb. One night they did a traditional Maldivian buffet and it was excellent.

THE ACCOMODATION - We chose to have a superior room, and boy was it worth it. King sized four poster bed, open air shower and really well furnished. Only ten yards from the beach as well.

VALUE FOR MONEY - We got a really cheap deal at the last minute from Kuoni, and the price we paid was incredible for what we got.

THE SERVICE - All the staff, whether Maldivian, Sri Lankan or Indian were very helpful, chatty and extremely pleasant with big smiles.

THE SPA - We had a treatment, massage and facial, and it was incredible. It is difficult to describe it, but dressed in my white robe, looking out to sea from the wooden building scented with oils, jos sticks and flowers, I felt like something out of a James Bond film.

I couldn't recommend Kuramathi enough. We only spent about £80 when we were there including the two spa treatments and all tips.

It's a lovely place... GO!

written by MaggieE on 08/06/2006

Kuramathi Tourist Island i the Maldives is a really good holiday base. Having been to a large and small island previously, I have always steered away from Kuramathi as I knew it was a large island, but how wrong I was! It never felt large or full. The dining room felt relaxed, and so did the bar and the coffee shop. The staff were attentive, and to go all that way for just one week was great. I would recommend this island to anyone. Being a larger island, but being divided into 3 resorts, made it feel you could go for long romantic walks, or just stay put outside your bungalow.

We had a great time. If you can afford it while you are there go on the Coral Romance Tour - two days at the most romantic island you could think of, and sheer luxury and pampering.

written by pulham on 16/05/2006

We loved Kuramathi Village in the Maldives so much that we are going back in June 2006.

This place is not just an underwater paradise, it draws you back like a majestic magnet time and time again.

Everybody we met was so friendly, and we had many a cocktail until the wee hours with them.

Staff were great, and if you talk about English football teams they get all excited. Take them an old footy shirt, and you will have a friend for life (def kids size)!!

The Food was lovely, especially the island BBQ where we ate all alone one evening (very romantic).

I'm sure some people do have bad experiences at some times in their life, BUT this wasn't one of mine.

“The island was fully booked when we were there, but it...”

★★★★★

written by aggybaggy on 03/03/2006

The island was fully booked when we were there, but it did not feel like it. We had beaches to ourselves most days, and we only really saw people in the main restaurant and in the bar! The one day we went to the Island Barbecue we were the only people in there! It was fantastic!

When you have your first meal there make sure you get a nice table with a view, as they will then reserve the table for you for the rest of your stay. If you go as close to the beach as you can, there will be a nice breeze, and the views in the day and at night are so romantic! Also, our table was right near the edge of the restaurant, so the waiters put our table on the beach one night so we could eat under the shooting stars! (Be nice and chatty to your waiter, it's worth it and they'll love you for it)

Go to Kandholado if you can. We stayed there overnight in a water bungalow. The Island is so tiny, it only takes about 5 minutes to walk around the whole thing! There's a beautiful spa and the reef is amazing.

We travelled to Kandholado by speed boat. We arrived at the island and were given sorbets to cool us down. We were then given a tour of the whole island and taken to the dive centre (a tiny hut), given a briefing and taken out for a snorkel safari along the reef.

This was the most amazing experience of our lives! The huge table coral was amazing. The colours of everything were so bright, and the amount of fish was astonishing. It was so clear and calm you felt like your were actually flying, and the drop off made me have a wobble of vertigo! We went for a snorkel on our own a few times whilst we were there, and saw turtles very close up and big white tip reef sharks!

We had lunch in the restaurant which was lovely (and tiny), then we were shown to our room. The water bungalows are well worth the little bit of extra money (there's only 4 on the island). The bathroom had panoramic views of the sea, we had steps down to the water where snorkeling was great, and the coral was still amazing and almost as many fish as the drop off!

We had an all over body massage side by side in a sea view room as the sun was setting, and we had a candle lit bath in a sunken bath with champagne and fresh fruit.

We later had dinner on the beach under the stars (which seemed even brighter than they did on Kuramathi), and the next morning a champagne breakfast was brought to our room, which we ate on the balcony watching the dolphins swim by in the distance.

Back to Kuramathi... You don't need to take any cash apart from tipping if you are all inclusive, as you charge everything to your room. There is no point in taking any shoes other than flip flops, as the paths are all sand, and it is too hot to wear anything else!

Kuramathi was the best place to have our honeymoon, and we would recommend it to anyone.

“1. Kuramathi Tourist Island is not an intimate island....”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Lambrias on 12/02/2006

1. Kuramathi Tourist Island is not an intimate island. There are three resorts with a taxi traversing back and forth. This means:
(a)If you want a drink when on the beach you often have to walk 15 minutes to your room.
(b) You cannot get a drink from the bar as you cannot use your all inclusive anywhere on the island, but only in the resort closest to your room.

2.The Bungalows are set back from the beach, many set in a kind of Semi Circle Shape. This means:
(a) In most Bungalows you cannot walk direct from your bed to the beach without crossing a path.
(b) The verandas are out front. This is far less intimate as your veranda faces about 10-15 others, and you sip cocktails with many other people walking past on the path directly in front. On most other islands the front of the bungalow is set on the beach and the path is set behind, meaning you have privacy.

3.Entertainment. Three resorts means one lot entertainment each night when the other two do not have it. If you are all inclusive you will not be able to use your all inclusive in the resort that has the entertainment that night.

4.Beach beds are a problem. There are none, which quite frankly kind of makes the idea of a beach holiday to relax a little pointless.

5.Socialising, again not so intimate. On a smaller resort you get to know many people after the end of the week. You go to one bar and know you will bump into someone you know. This is not often the case on kuramthi as there are far more places to spend the evening.

6.We went looking for Paradise, but found a couple had brought 6 children with them screaming and shouting as we lay on our towels (No Sunbeds).

7. People Booking after May beware. Out of 6 days in rained non stop for 4.5 of them.

We spent 6 days at Kuramathi Coconut Village in May 05, having been on another resort the previous year. One day was spent at Gatwick due to the 30 hour delay to our Monarch Gatwick Flight.

Complete Rubbish!!!
What do these people expect!!! Do they want this island to themselves?
If the bungalows were any closer they would be in the water! If it was full of sun beds it would look like "Costa del sol” this place is unique!
Oh and as for taking 15 mins to get back to the room it took us only 15 mins to walk the length of the island!!! And if you don’t like kids well just move along the beach (we were all kids once) what’s the problem?
Check other people’s comments. I’ve travelled quite extensively around the world myself and this is definitely at the top of my list, don’t get put off try it for yourself!
We went first 2 weeks in May 05 sunny every day but one. Loved it going back May 06.
I've been looking at several sites for info on The Maldives including reviews. All the comments here have been most helpful in helping me choose my resort to visit. You could do worse than have a look at www.the-complete-maldives-holiday-guide.com They don't do holidays but they do have information in abundance I've found helpful among other site searches I've done.

I want to point out that whilst some of the factors were in respect of features outside of the control of the staff at the resort, most of my comments are not.

The poor layout, poor customer service, the poor facilities, the lack of feel good factor, you know that feeling you get when you first see paradise. The screaming kids, the difficulty to use the all inclusive, poor entertaining, poor excursions and to top it all it lacks precisely what makes the Maldives so special, which is intimacy and a feeling of being in paradise. Kuramathi was more like Maldives meets the Spanish Costa.

I don't think you can blame the holiday resort for your delay or the rain! That was just unlucky, I went to Kuramathi just over a year ago, I thought it was stunning, very clean, peaceful and I would highly recommend it. Shame you didn't enjoy it but I feel some of your comments are not a reflection on the place itself ie the weather! My advice is pay a little bit extra and go when it's not the rainy season.

Thought's Response to Lambrias's Review

Written on: 14/03/2007

Lambrias, I have been to Kuramathi five times and while I appreciate it is not one of the most intimate islands, being 1km long and 200 yards wide! I still think it as possibly one of the most amazing places on the planet. Why do the Cotton Club in the Village, when more casual is so much better. It is truly all inclusive, you don't pay for a bottle of water as you do elsewhere on the island. On a general note, the main beach on Kuramathi is tiny but you still find the nearest person to you is 10+ metres away. There is usually only 10 people on the beach at any one time and of course there is always the more secluded parts of the island! My over-riding experience of Kuramathi is that if you want to be alone, you can be but if you fancy being social just hit the bar! Oh I forgot about the moonlight skinny dipping, oh the stars are stunning and the crabs, I have many happy memories at 1 in the morning chasing hundreds of the little buggers off the beach. It was fun, walking up the beach and seeing this mass of crabs parting as you walked, amazing! Don't knock it, that was a holiday of a lifetime! Hoping to go back later this year, beware of the rainy season, even during the good season you get a couple of days of rain but it's fun and sociable. Feb and Sep I've found best. Anyway, that's my tuppence worth!

I am sorry for not taking the time to wander the island notebook in hand trying to work out how many children there were and where they were staying.

The truth of the matter is there were 5 children on the beach at the coconut village from 29.5.2005 to 6.6.2005, because I saw them with my own eyes.

As for the memories all I remember is the 30 hours at Gatwick the near riot when all the holidaymakers refused point blank to be taken to Eastbourne (on the second day of the delay) then the near non stop torrential rain when we finally got to the island ( I have video evidence of all of this and many letters from Monarch and Kuoni in support of all this)

As for moving we felt compelled to move to a water bungalow simply to get away from all the noise of these children, even if we could not get away from the rain.

I was on the Island at the same time as you and have come away with some amazing memories and was lucky to have met some lovely people several of whom I am still in touch with.
You are quite wrong about the children, there were seven children on the Island, two families were travelling together so that makes four adults and they had five children between them.
The other two on the Island were the daughter of the manger (who resides there) and my daughter.
As you found the Island large and less than intimate I am suprised you were not able to escape to the other two resorts to get away from them.
Kuramathi is proud of the fact that it is a family friendly island, if you really do not want to be SURROUNDED by children can I suggest you book one of the adult only Islands.

Lambrias's Response to Lambrias's Review

Written on: 21/03/2006

Complete Rubbish!!! What does this person expect!!! The whole point of the Maldives is to relax and indeed have as much of the place to themselves as possible? Actually on most other islands you can lie in your bed and gaze out over the sea, and this experience truly is like no other holiday on earth. That is the charm, indeed the bungalows are very close to the water! You don’t need a hundred sun beds just a handful for those that want them. That would make all the difference. Oh and as for taking 15 minis to get back to the room just get a map of the island. From memory it is at least a mile Long!!! The point about kids is that most other more romantic resorts don’t really cater for them. As Kuramathi does, it is worth pointing this out to the unsuspecting traveller. I’ve travelled quite extensively around the Maldives myself and this is one is a disappointment, it simply spoils all the things that are the best of the Maldives.

We have been to the Maldives 3 times. Twice to Kuramathi and once to Lily Beach. We would go back to Kuramathi tomorrow! We had a Deluxe room, and it was cracking. Staff are good too.

“My husband and I are going back to Kuramathi Village...”

written by monicafrayne on 21/11/2005

My husband and I are going back to Kuramathi Village in the Maldives for Christmas and New Year, and this will be our forth visit to Kuramathi. We have been to three other islands, and although they were very nice, for us, they did not compare. We are looking forward to seeing the new restaurant, and we are sure it will be a stunning addition, having been shown the plans and walked the site in June of this year. Christmas on the island is fabulous, and although a Muslim country, the hotel and staff put so much effort into decorating the public places and all of the walkways, that the place becomes a giant fairyland. I can't wait. May I also point out that there is no set age group on this resort. We have met and made very good friends with a lovely young lady of 23 and her partner of 34, and at the other end of the scale, a couple in their sixties, all lovely people who we still keep in touch with. In fact the younger two have become firm friends, and are in fact returning with us at Christmas and have done for the past two years. I am sixty years of age by the way, and love to swim in the sea with my mask, snorkel and flippers. There are some lovely lagoons with very shallow water where you can see a vast array of fish without venturing too far out of your depth. A little tip if you are very shortsighted like I am. Go to Specsavers and invest in a Prescription lens mask. The difference it makes is unbelievable. We are looking forward to seeing all of the staff again. They are fantastic, and amaze us by always remembering our names, and greet us like old friends. Roll on December 18th!!

You will love the new restaurant. Much more room and well laid out with lots more sea views to be had whilst dining. Wish we were going back at Christmas!

“I have to be honest and say that there is absolutely...”

★★★★★

written by cmil on 17/10/2005

I have to be honest and say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with Kuramathi, it truly is paradise. We had a bit of a bad start as the resorts larger boat had broken down, and we had to transfer from the airport to the resort via a smaller speed boat. I have sea legs, and I must be honest I found it tough going! However, we did get the seaplane back and found it to be an excellent service, so I'd advise paying the extra for the plane, particularly if you're fresh out of sea legs!

The resort itself was first class, and I honestly could not find fault with it. The accommodation was excellent, and our room boy was just superb. We always had clean room towels twice a day, and clean beach towels every morning. Our waiter was extremely friendly and helpful, as were all of the staff.

We stayed in chalet 46 and had to walk less than 100 yards to get to the beach, which was never packed or busy. Sure you could see other people, but they had their little piece of paradise and you had yours!

The only drawback to the resort is that there are two other separate resorts on the island, and this meant that you had to pay if you wanted to use any of their facilities such as the gym, swimming pool, restaurants or bars. It's honestly a small price to pay, and besides the quality, quantity, and choice of food at our restaurant really meant that you never got the same meal twice in the entire two weeks, so you never wanted to go elsewhere. The all inclusive drinks covered pretty much everything apart from expensive spirits. The Vodka was Smirnoff, and the rum was Bacardi, and they didn't skimp on the measures either!

Some advice... The staff do like to be tipped, so please don't take offence at tipping these guys, because it's really how they make their money because their wage is extremely poor! Also don't bring shoes; you won't need them, sandals only. Do bring Jungle Juice, as the bush flies, not mosquitoes, can be rather annoying!

The last thing I have to say is that I'm going back! I loved it that much, and really can't wait.
