These are professional standard headphones, and are the ones chosen by well over half of the professional touring sound engineers I have worked with over the last 5 years. I have personally used mine while mixing monitors for the likes of ASH, Reel Big Fish, and The Futureheads. Some people have complained about build quality, no idea why, they are indestructible. In the time I have owned my HD-25s, I have worn out 3 pairs of shure in-ears, the HD-25s are still going strong.
Other people complain about the bass or treble response, at the end of the day these are not Bose or any other sort of consumer junk, they are professional cans that present the sound exactly as it was recorded. If you want a bit of a "DJ smile" get something else, if you want perfect reproduction, get these.

70 off percent of touring sound engineers don't make a habit of being wrong!

I had been looking around for some headphones for a while, as my old ones broke. I picked up the sennheiser hd25's the other day and have been using them non-stop since. I chose them after trying out other brands (pioneer hdj2000's were the closest competitor, but for price I felt that these were the right ones). Very impressed with sound quality, design and weight of the product. Sound is crisp and very clear, similar to the sound quality of a reference monitor. Very pleased with the product and would definitely recommend to anyone that is serious about music, waiting to play out with these but I have a feeling they will do just fine!

High SPL. Comfortable to wear. Very good frequency response, particularly low-end. Accurate.
These are the best general-purpose headphones for use in loud environments ie: live audio.
Well recommend Sennheiser HD25 headphone.

Amazing sound, specially bass response.
Great for mixing and picking up things you don't hear on speakers. Can't use them for very long. Only for critical listening or bass work
Sore ears after 30mins or so. that real shame
Overall, so worth it.

“I bought my pair just about 6 months ago and i reckon...”

★★★★★

written by on 21/02/2008

I bought my pair just about 6 months ago and i reckon they stack up to anything in this sector. they've been used on a daily basis either mixing, monitoring or even wandering round town with an mp3 player.

They are perfect for checking a final mix or master as they'll pick up on issues i've never managed to hear on speakers. be careful though they can go very loud and this could easily lead to fatigue.

i'd recommend these to anyone as they'll cover every job u could ever think of in sound and after using them as monitors on a location job in a busy shopping centre they cut out the outside world enough to make life easier in the mix.

as mentioned in other reviews the cable coming out the right hand side is unusual but doesn't seem to be an issue. on the subject of the cable length though that is and the first thing i did was buy an extension cable.

overall though as with sennheiser products well worth the money and highly commended.

Having used several monitoring headphones over the past ten years or so I've found these to be quite amazing in the clarity of reproduction. Mixing is a dream, translate fantastically to my Genelec 8030A's in an acoustically treated room. They really are good. Don't rely on panning cos there's no crossover with closed back design's but believe me you will hear every imperfection...Perfection.

I have had to have 2 sets of these units replaced under warranty , it seems to be bad connections in either left or right channel , starting off as a small crackle and turning into something you really need to manipulate to get any sound out of , these phones are great when they work , but getting them to is another story.

“These Sennheisers rule. While other models from this...”

★★★★★

written by Dorkstar on 27/08/2004

These Sennheisers rule. While other models from this maker are generally either cheap and forgettable or huge, these compact cans mean business. They're loud, and they'll tell you exactly what you're hearing. In this price range, you can find headphones that have a "slicker" sound, but none of them will be as versatile; I use mine for home listening, session monitoring in the studio, DJing and camera work.

The swiveling left-hand earcup and the split bridge headrest together make these the perfect on-location monitors. As other reviewers said, all parts are interchangeable. Try replacing worn out ear-padding on any other DJ/monitor headphone. Also, the earpads are less than ordinary; no other midsize (non-noise-cancelling) headphone offers this degree of ambient sound suppresion. I hesitate to use my HD-25 on the streets. A loud iPod will make you less attentive to traffic. You won't hear the nice cars, only the noisy ones.

Highly, highly recommended.

“Sennheiser's HD-25 headphones are a legend in the pro...”

★★★★★

written by Soundman on 31/01/2004

Sennheiser's HD-25 headphones are a legend in the pro audio world and became the industry standard almost as soon as they were released.

The first truly lightweight headphone, comfortable enough for prolonged use and delivering a sound quality that enables critical listening. Having used AKG, Beyer and many other headphones these are my favourite.

Why? First the build quality is superb almost every part of the unit can be replace if damaged, so if you snap a cable or tear off an ear pad you just buy another and they are as good as new.

Second the comfort factor. When clambering around recording sound FX or sitting for a couple of hours in a cold church recording choral music these phones still feel good and don't leave you with a migraine because your head has been crushed. The more energetic will find that the ability to split the headband is a real boon as this keeps the headphones firmly on your head even when leaning out of a boat or climbing a mountain.

Another useful feature for serious users is the provision of an earpiece that can be swivelled backwards or forwards. So a DJ for example, can flip one earphone back to hear what is going on around them whilst preparing the next disc. (Not visible in the illustration accompanying the review that picture is in fact of the budget HD 25-SP model)

Finally, and probably most important the sound quality is super. A natural balanced sound with extended bass and high frequencies mean that these are perfect for monitoring or listening purposes. You will hear things you didn?t hear before. Positional information is also rendered very well offering the listener a clear image of the sound stage. The overall balanced sound making these a lot less fatiguing to wear than some makes.

Being closed back the HD 25?s give good attenuation of surrounding noises and can deliver very high levels of sound if required. Remember however, listening for extended periods to hig
h levels of audio can damage your hearing.

Niggles, the cable could be a tad longer 1.5 meters is provided. A single cable comes out of the right hand earpiece to plug into the amplifier. I would prefer that to have come from the left hand side.

In conclusion these are the best headphones that I have heard though I am always willing to be introduced to better products. Mine have been stood on, run over by a Land Rover, dropped in mud yet still work perfectly. They have had new pads and a cable to be fair but they are 3 years old. A best buy in my book even at between £125-£145 a pair, they will go on forever and serious users shouldn't consider anything else.

For those who are more budget conscious try the HD 25-SP version. They have a less versatile and slightly less robust headband and slightly lower specified transducers in the earpiece. I suspect these are the headphones reviewed earlier by those who found the build and sound quality less than satisfactory. The HD 25 proper looks like the illustration above.
